Her voice didn’t rise, but the firmness in her tone carried all manner of seriousness. Jeff stood there, momentarily stunned, feeling as though the ground beneath him had shifted. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out. The sound of the housekeeper’s gentle voice broke his trance. “Please, sir, let me walk you out.”
He nodded slowly and followed, his body was already too weak to make another argument. He hadn’t expected this. Not this, not like he had an expectation.
