Ricca had long left Shane's room, but Shane remained lying on her bed, still feeling the weight of her Aunt Ricca’s threat.
"Shane cried and cried silently. Only she could hear herself cry. "She doesn’t want others to see or hear her like this. She’s afraid her aunt might make good on her threats," she whispered to herself in fear.
Knock! Knock! Knock! — came the knock from Shane’s door, prompting her to get up and compose herself.
"Yes! I’m coming! Just a moment!" she answered the one knocking outside her room.
"I'm coming in now, dear," said Mrs. D.
Shane quickly stood up from the bed and opened the door, forcing a smile to hide her deep sorrow from her grandmother.
Meanwhile, Winson still stood outside the apartment where Lorain was staying, but she hadn’t come out of her room.
"Should I go in? Or should I just wait for Lorain to come out?" he asked himself. "Lorain, are you in there? Can I come in?"
But there was no answer. So he decided to go inside.
"Lorain!"
