“You've killed him!” Cecilia’s voice vibrated with the weight of her accusation. “You killed him because he wouldn't agree to this union!” Her eyes were wide open, shaking with an eerie light. It was the first time since I'd met her that she seemed to be acting out of order. Out of fear. Even her fingers trembled.
“You all saw us trying our best to save him,” I said calmly, rising to my feet after closing the man's open eyes. His death baffled me, but now we had bigger issues to focus on, like defending our dignity. “Why would we have gone through all the trouble of getting help if we intended to just let him die in the end?”
She pondered on my question, but I doubted it was because it was a sensible question, but rather because she wanted to give an equally argumentative response.
“Sister, be reasonable,” Clara interjected. “This is the last thing we need right now. We should be looking for what killed him, not throwing about accusations.”
