Chapter one

Elliott

I burst in through the emergency room, continuous tears rolling down my cheeks. I walk up to the nurses station and choke, hysterical, "My daughter, she's three years old...her daycare called me..."

Before I could finish, paramedics were rushing her in from the ambulance dock. "Macy Adams, three years old, suffering severe asthma. Asthma inhaler ran out at the daycare," a female medic says to a female doctor.

"Macy," I choke in sobs, running alongside them and take her small hand in mine. "Daddy's here Mace."

Her wheezing made it difficult for her to speak, but she seemed relieved I was there. She squeezes my hand as tight as she could. She keeps her eyes on mine as they get her in a private room and hook her up for a medicine for her to breathe in and calm her breathing.

"Is her..." the doctor starts asking about her mother and I quickly shake my head, gesturing towards the hall. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize her mother was a sensitive subject."

"She was killed in a tragic car accident while I was on duty, two years ago. I'm lucky to still have my daughter," I choke quietly and she gives me sympathetic eyes.

I break into uncontrolled sobs and she stands on tiptoe to take my tall frame in her arms. It's the first I've broke down since the accident. Macy is all I have for family. As a born intersex, my birth parents left me at an orphanage.

It wasn't until I reached my junior year of high school that I met Macy's mother, Miranda. She was the first to accept me, a new girl from California. She stopped all the bullying that came my way, kissing me in front of the whole school. We dated through college, got married after graduation and two years later we had Macy.

I let out a shuttering, calming breath as her fingers scrunched the back of my short pixie cut. I lean down so she could lower back on her feet and I burry my face in the crook of her neck. "Daddy," Macy calls faintly.

I step back from the doctor, composing myself and enter the room with my daughter. I sit on the edge of her bed, taking her hand and say quietly, not trusting my voice, "I'm here princess. How are you feeling?"

"Tired," she says quietly with half lidded eyes. She looks behind me at the doctor and says with a hint of a smile, "She's pretty, like mommy."

I give a light smile and look back to see the doctor blushing, looking away. "Can we keep her as my new mommy," she asks with her cute little smile.

"Sweetie, it doesn't work like that. Daddy can't just make someone be your new mommy," I choke quietly, fighting back the tears.

"But I miss mommy," she chokes in broken sobs.

I try to comfort her like I'm normally able to, but she pushes me away. To my surprise the doctor who was working her stay in the hospital took her in her arms and Macy allowed her. I watched as the doctor soothed her to sleep and get held in place by Macy.

Our eyes meet as tears roll down my cheeks. "I'm sorry," I choke quietly.

Her face tinges a bright pink and says shyly, "I don't mind."

The more I look at her the more I can see the hidden bruises on her face, neck and arms. "Who is hitting you," I ask in a protective tone, gently caressing her face as she flinches. "Let me help you, please?"

Four words made me see red, "You work with her."

"Who," I ask in an extremely protective tone.

My partner, Reese, walks in and the doctor goes ramrod still. I'd just gotten my answer. "Hey baby, I see you've met Elliott and Macy," she says and I saw red.

I turn and grab Reese by her arm. I cuff her hands behind her back and the doctor looks at me with scared eyes. "Its okay now," I say in a soothing tone as our captain walks in. "Sir, Reese has been abusing her partner. I'm not sure why or how long, but she's right here. I don't want her questioned around Macy."

"Is this true," my captain asks softly.

She looks between Reese and my captain, fear wild in her eyes. Her eyes meet mine and she relaxes a little, nodding vigorously. Reese starts to struggle against my hold on her. "You bitch! When I get out, I'll kill you," she shouts, waking and scaring Macy.

The captain takes her from my grasp and hands her off to a second pair of officers. I go and take both my daughter and her doctor in my arms. They both cling to me for dear life and I meet eyes with my captain. "I'll see you Monday Elliott," he says softly and I nod lightly.

I hold Macy with one arm and use the other to stroke the doctor's hair. It didn't take long for me to get them both calmed down and asleep. A woman who looked like the medical director pokes in the room and notices the doctor calming down in my arms. "She told you," she asks quietly with concern and I nod.

I get a closer look at the medical director and she resembles the doctor treating Macy. Tears of relief fill the older woman's eyes and comes to kiss the younger doctor's forehead. She looks at me with grateful eyes and says in a choked whisper, "I've been trying to get her to turn her in for months. Thank you."

"You're welcome, I honestly noticed the bruises hidden under the makeup. I'm good at noticing hidden abuse. I used to hide my own abuse growing up as a kid," I choke quietly, pulling Macy closer to me, but she was attached to the doctor. "She misses her mother and I don't know what to do."

"She left you," she asks curious.

"Car accident, I almost lost both of them while I was on duty," I choke in barely a whisper. "She was the only one who accepted me and now I'm left alone again, but with a child who is constantly looking for her mother."

"Why don't you try getting some rest," she says in sympathy and I nod, closing my eyes as sleep instantly takes me under.

Jessie

I woke up in what I thought was the on call room, but to my surprise I was snuggled up with a little girl and a goddess. They both had platinum blonde hair, curly. The goddess had her in a short pixie,  curls hugging her scalp in tight curls. Her lips were luscious and pouty. She had a strong body build from what I could tell of her uniform.

Her daughter had the same pouty lips and it confused me as I recall the little girl calling her 'Daddy?'. She said she lost her mother two years ago in a car accident. Did she call her that because of her masculine structure?

I study her more, her face perfectly sculpted with a strong jawline and plump heart shaped lips. Her tall structure was broad like a man and from what I could tell, she had the muscle to go with her body build. My eyes are drawn to her groin area and if I'm not mistaken, I see an outline of a male's genitals. A rather large one at that.

I bite my bottom lip, looking back at this gorgeous woman's face. She's extremely attractive and it's sad to hear she's single, raising this precious little girl on her own. My heart stopped when her daughter asked me to be her new mother and I could tell it bothered Elliott a little, but didn't want to show weakness in front of her daughter.

"She's quite the catch, isn't she," my mother says quietly, snapping me back to reality. "To think the little girl attached to you is part of the package deal."

"I'm not sure I want to date another cop mom, not after Reese," I choke quietly, stroking the child's hair from her face as she snuggles up closer to me.

"Mommy," she chokes in her sleep, face scrunched up in fear. She buries her face in my chest and muffles, "Don't go."

Without thinking, I wrap my arms around her, holding her close and she relaxes in my arms. Tears sting at my eyes at the memory of the baby I lost during one of Reese's beatings. Thankfully I can still get pregnant, but haven't tried again since I lost the baby six months ago.

A gentle calloused hand caresses my face as tears draw down my cheeks. A sweep of a thump wipes the tears that managed to escape without my knowledge and meet eyes with the owner of the hand on my face. Piercing bright blue eyes stare back in mine, an understanding held in them. I let go of the sobs that were fighting to come out. The small child in my arms wakes and does her best to help calm me down and I hold her close to my chest, not wanting to let go.

"Why don't you go home, take a few days," my mother says in sympathy, knowing why I was breaking down.

"I don't want to be alone," I choke in sobs, shaking my head, looking at her.

"You can come home with me and Daddy," Macy says in a cute little voice.

"Oh, sweetie, I couldn't..."

"Actually, I insist. Reese could make bail being her father is a judge. You'll be safe with me," Elliott says in a protective tone. "Don't worry about clothes, I put away my wife's clothes for when Macy got older."

Knowing her words are true, I nod, not fighting against her. My mother lets out a relieved breath, grateful knowing I was going to be safe tonight. "Thank you officer," my mother chokes with a relieved smile.

Elliott nods lightly. "Its not safe for her to go home in case she makes bail. At least with me I can protect her if she finds out she's with me," she says softly, getting Macy's shoes on after signing her discharge papers from Carol.

"I'll cover your patients Jessie," Carol says in sympathy. My mother probably asked her to while I was sleeping.

"Thanks Carol," I choke quietly.

When we get to Elliott's house, it was beautifully decorated. There was a table of various pictures of a woman, I presume to be her late wife, near the front door. "She was beautiful," I say softly as Elliott placed her car keys on a dish on the table.

"Thank you," she chokes quietly, picking up a picture of her holding a young Macy. "She was three months pregnant when she was in the accident.

"Did Reese cause..."

"Yes, I was ten weeks," I choke in a whisper. "It was six months ago. The abuse stopped when I told her I wanted a baby. She beat me when I didn't have dinner ready when she ended her shift. I was taking a nap after a twelve hour surgery and was sleeping when she got home."

"I'm sorry to hear that," she says in sympathy. She holds her hand out to me and says softly, "Come with me. I'll show you where the clothes are if you'd like to take a shower."

I take her hand and she leads me upstairs to a room that looked more like a storage room than anything. "I put all her things in the spare room for Macy.  You're welcome to anything you'd like," she says quietly and I nod. "Her clothes are hanging in the closet. Night clothes and undergarments are in the dresser.

"The master bedroom is across the hall. You can shower in there if you'd like. I'll sleep on the couch or bunk with Macy, you can take the bed," she says softly. "I'm going to change out of my uniform and start dinner. Do you have any allergies to anything?"

"No and thank you for everything," I say quietly and she nods lightly, leaving me to look through her wife's clothes.

It felt wrong to be wearing her wife's clothes, but at least it saved me from having to go home and having that chance in running into Reese. Thankfully her wife was my size and we shared a similar taste in clothing.

I grab a pair of light blue skinny jeans with a v-neck shirt and matching bra and panties. I head across the hall and the door was ajar. Not realizing she was still in the room, I push the door open and she was standing with her back to the door.

She stood in boxers and a sports bra, muscle rippling as she moved around, dressing herself in a pair of basketball shorts and a muscle shirt. She turns to face me, clutching her chest startled by me in the doorway. I bite my lip as I feel my cheeks heat up and lower my gaze to the floor.

"Sorry, the door was open," I murmur shyly.

"H-how long have you been standing there," she asks nervous, scared.

I could see tears in her eyes and took a step closer, caressing her face. "I know about your condition, I felt you when we hugged in the hallway. Your uniform makes you rather noticable," I say biting my lip seductively.

I reach up, kissing her opposite cheek and she looks at me with relief. "Now you understand why Macy calls me Daddy," she chokes in barely a whisper and I nod lightly. "Please keep this between us. Only a handful of people know about me. Miranda was the first to accept me, before I met her I used to get beat up for being different. My own parents didn't want me, the lady running the orphanage molested me until I was old enough to leave..."

She breaks down from reliving what happened to her and I took her in my arms. I know my relationship with Reese was abusive, but hearing what Elliott had to live through is far worse than what I went through this last year.

"You're secret is safe with me," I choke in a soothing whisper. "You can trust my mother too, her sister is also intersex."

I feel her sigh with relief as her body relaxes in my arms. Her arms snake around my waist, drawing me closer to her with her face nuzzling in my shoulder. "Thank you," she chokes in a whisper.
