Chapter 6: Ice Cold

Evie’s POV

“Who is she?” I heard Mr. Trevor Hall say to Damien with a shocked and worried expression.

“You know her. You hired her, so you don’t need to act like you don’t know her,” Damien was rather cold and I felt as if I was between two icebergs.

Shit, the titanic couldn’t take one iceberg.

Trevor smirked. “Well, I guess you forgot the rules. No strangers.”

“She is not a stranger,” he looked at me and I grew more nervous. Suddenly, he took my hand in his, and I stared widely at our connection. “She is my wife-to-be.”

That didn’t go well because Trevor squinted his eyes and looked at him with disgrace. “You’re setting up your happy after with the person I hired after you ruined mine?”

“Well, life is ironic.” He shrugged. “Do you want my help now?”

The change of topic was swift.

“I won’t, to be immensely honest with you,” He muttered, “But somehow the team needs all hands on deck. So, you know the way.”

Damien smiled evilly and walked inside. Our hands were still joined so I knew nothing better than to follow him blindly. Oh god, I just wish he wasn't worse than Lucifer.

Trevor was behind us and as we went into a big hall, a few more people stood up with a smile — however, they didn’t seem to welcome me.

“You brought a stranger?” One of them said the same sentence.

“She’s my wife-to-be. She is more less of a stranger than you all can ever be.”

Oh, burn…

Everyone shut their mouths and sat down. We followed and sat on the seats too, followed by Trevor.

“Let’s make a plan now,” Trevor announced.

“That’s it. I need confirmation with everyone, first thing tomorrow morning. Have a good night,” After a long three-hour session, Trevor concluded the meeting and stood up.

Everyone started leaving the venue but I had to stay between the two blocks of ice.

“You too,” he said to Damien and I looked at him — why the hell we can’t leave! This was awkward.

“Oh, I am leaving,” Damien stood up and so did I. “But we need to talk about what happened too.”

“I don’t think so.”

“You know that this is the only opportunity for mending our friendship.”

Of course, what else would I expect if two icebergs were up and started talking? Huh.

“Well, so be it.” Trevor left the place too and now, the entire big hall had only me and him. Well, better than strangers, I suppose.

Damien sighed. “Let’s leave.”

I nodded. As we were about to go, he suddenly called my name.

“Evie.”

I was ahead of him, so I had to look back. “Yeah?”

“About everything that you heard in the last hours. You know I brought you here because I can’t leave you alone with Lucifer on your back. But the information is confidential and I want you to respect that.”

“I know that. And anyway, who will I tell anything to? It is not like I am working for anyone else than you.”

Something went through his mind and he raised his eyebrow. “Are you sure?”

“Of course.”

He nodded. “Because, you know, if you are, you’re in more trouble than any person alive.”

Okay, I would admit that his threats are gut-wrenching.

I gulped and stared at him with confidence so he wouldn't get any wrong hints. I wasn’t working for anyone — but I am sure a person like him would get trust issues before he gets the name of a person.

And it was clear that he was from the same category as Lucifer. Just that it wasn’t public.

He smiled.

“Well, that was great. Let’s go now.”

I sighed. Of course, it was great for him!

Damien’s POV

I parked the car in front of my house.

“So, do you want to stay?” I asked casually. She looked at me shocked.

“Huh?”

“Do you—”

“No, I heard that. I mean, why would I?”

I looked out of the window of the car. “Because we’re getting married?”

“No, we aren’t.”

I looked at her. “What?”

“I mean, we aren’t getting married. We are just signing on a paper that makes us related and what would be written on that paper would be a complete lie. So now, I don’t consider that marriage. More like kidnapping with permission.”

He laughed at the last sentence. “Kidnapping with permission? Really?”

“Yeah, I mean. You know how it is.”

“Well, it is not your wish if it affects the kidnapping terms,” He looked at me and exaggerated the word, “I have to keep you safe and you aren’t safe anywhere else than my house.”

“Well, I was safe till now,” I kept my point.

“That’s like saying I was alive until I died.”

Well, maybe.

But that’s kinda true. Anyone is alive until—

“I bet you’re making some silly phrases in that small head of yours. Well, you can do that inside. Come on.”

He got out of the car. I smiled and got out too. I guess I will have to stay with the freezer tonight.
