Chapter 2

作者: James Xander
An hour later, while I was in the hospital being resuscitated for pneumonia caused by the fever, Sabrina posted a photo of herself lying in a car. In the background, Bradley's chiseled abs were dotted with hickeys.

The caption read, "The new car and you must both bear my mark forever."

When Bradley rushed over, his shirt buttons weren't even done up properly. He threw himself at my bedside, his eyes reddening.

Back then, I naively thought he was heartbroken over me, but it turned out to be nothing more than guilt after a fling.

I felt nauseated. This piece of trash was what Bradley wrecked our marriage for?

I couldn't stand to see her pathetic, victimized face for another second, so I turned and walked away.

But no sooner had I gotten into the car than Bradley called.

The moment I picked up, he asked frantically, "Why did you suddenly come to the office?"

"Why?" I started the car and replied coolly, "I just happened to have a contract to discuss. Is there something you're afraid I'll find out?"

Bradley seemed not to have expected that question, and his breathing hitched.

A few seconds of silence passed before his voice melted into that practiced, honeyed persuasion I knew all too well.

"Honey, what nonsense are you talking about? What would I possibly have to hide from you? The office is just too messy. If I'd known you were coming, I could've had someone tidy it up in advance. Besides, how could I ever betray you? You can look into it all you want."

Hearing this, I was a bit puzzled.

Sabrina hadn't actually told him that I had laid all my cards on the table?

I sifted through the evidence while listening to him lie. There were three gigabytes of files, and every single one of them was connected to Bradley.

Last Valentine's Day, he claimed he was on a business trip abroad and couldn't call, but he was actually watching the Northern Lights in the Arctic with Sabrina.

When my father, Dustin Blackburn, was critically ill, I called Bradley over 30 times. Yet, he didn't answer a single one, because he was celebrating Sabrina's birthday at the time.

"I believe you. But what's the deal with that watch?"

Seeing me bring up the matter myself, Bradley actually seemed relieved. His voice drew closer to the receiver, deliberately intimate.

"I suddenly blacked out at the office one day. Sabrina happened to walk by and helped me to the hospital." He paused, then added, "She stayed with me all night, so I gave her a watch as a thank-you gift. I just forgot to tell you at the time."

Forgot? He had quite the selective memory then.

Not only did he conveniently leave that out, but he also forgot to mention that very same night, they checked into a penthouse suite at a hotel and stayed there for three nights.

I sneered inwardly.

"How thoughtful of her. She even had the black shirt you collapsed in washed, ironed, and returned by the next day."

Bradley noticeably paused on the other end. His breath caught for half a beat before he laughed it off again.

"Isn't she just? She's attentive to the last detail. But this is what I mean—you're always so paranoid. My heart belongs to you and only you."

His lips came close to the receiver, his voice dripping with forced intimacy.

"Once I get through this busy period, I'll take you to Alma Island for a vacation. It'll be just the two of us."

The tenderness that once could soften my heart now only made me feel sick.

"Sure," I said, looking out the window at the passing neon lights, my tone as calm as if discussing the weather. "But you go ahead and take care of your business first. Don't let me keep you."

"Keep me? Nothing's more important than spending time with you."

Bradley's voice was laced with eager, fawning desperation, but my heart only grew colder.

It wasn't because he had cheated on me, but because I could never have imagined they had been putting on this act right under my nose for so long.

My grip tightened on the steering wheel as I fought the urge to confront Bradley right then and there.

"Emily!" His eyes burned with terrifying intensity, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "Don't make me—"Just then, my fingers finally found the panic button on the headboard. I pressed it without a moment's hesitation. The piercing alarm blared to life, and every light in the villa instantly blazed on.Bradley whipped his head around to look out the window. The bodyguards were already turning to storm into the villa. He turned to face me again, his eyes filled with a tangled mix of hatred, resentment, and a fleeting flash of despair that vanished as quickly as it appeared."Emily, must you be so heartless?" His voice suddenly dropped low, as if all the strength had drained out of him. "Ten years, Emily. Ten years, and you threw it all away and sent me to prison like it meant nothing?""You're the one who threw it all away first," I said, looking at him, my voice completely devoid of emotion. "We were finished the moment you betrayed me and called me a housekeeper.""Fine. Have

The constant tension over the past days had worn me out, and I soon fell into a deep sleep.I didn't know how long had passed when I was jolted awake by an extremely faint creak. My heart instantly leaped into my throat, and I snapped my eyes open. The sole light in the room came from a tiny nightlight by the bed. In its faint amber glow, I could make out a tall dark silhouette half-crouched on the windowsill.Rainwater dripped from the soaked hem of his clothes onto the carpet, blooming into a small patch of dark stain.Bradley had lost a lot of weight. The black windbreaker that once fit him perfectly now hung loosely on his frame, and his entire body reeked heavily of blood. But those eyes of his were disturbingly bright, his gaze fixed on me with deadly intensity, like a wild beast locking onto its prey."Emily, it's been a while. I knew they wouldn't be able to stop me from seeing you."His voice came out raspy, and it even carried a trace of eerie amusement.Cold sweat in

Sabrina was so terrified that she broke down in tears and screams. "This has nothing to do with me! I don't know anything!""Get him!"At the lead officer's command, two officers lunged straight for Bradley. But just as they were about to grab him, Bradley suddenly shoved the bodyguard beside him hard and pushed Sabrina directly into the arms of the officers.Seizing the split-second distraction, he spun around and hurled himself toward the floor-to-ceiling windows on the side of the banquet hall. The enormous windows shattered with a deafening crash, the spray of debris cutting into his arms. Before he fled, Bradley cast one deep look back at me. In those usually impassive eyes, there was a glint of bitter resentment and quiet malice."After him!" the lead officer roared, charging forward with his men.I followed them to the window just in time to see Bradley land on the lawn below. He scrambled to his feet and sprinted toward the dense woods behind the winery."He won't get

Sabrina immediately played along, her eyes reddening as she hid behind him and choked out through sobs, "Bradley, don't say that. Ms. Blackburn just had a moment of weakness."Even as she spoke, she was secretly glancing up to gauge the guests' reactions, the smugness unmistakable in her eyes.Several of Bradley's friends immediately stepped forward to echo him."That's right! We all knew about this!""This woman is just a housekeeper who's been with the Fry family for too long, and now she thinks she can latch onto someone above her station!""Bradley has been more than generous with her, and she still dares to cause trouble here! How shameless of her!"The guests' murmurs grew louder and louder, and the looks they cast at me were filled with nothing but contempt and disgust.People pointed at me, some even muttering curses under their breath."So she's a fraud. She looks all prim and proper on the outside, but she's actually rotten to the core."Bradley watched it all with a

The air in the banquet hall seemed to freeze in an instant.Every pair of eyes snapped to me. Bewilderment gave way to recognition, and then a wave of sharp intakes of breath rippled through the crowd. The smug smile on Sabrina's face stiffened immediately. She instinctively shrank back behind Bradley, clutching his cuff with fingers that wouldn't stop shaking."W-What are you doing here?" she asked in a quivering voice.I ignored her and fixed my eyes on Bradley. His pupils suddenly contracted, a flicker of panic flashing through his eyes. But it was quickly masked by his usual ruthlessness. He let go of Sabrina's waist and walked over to me, his voice carrying a barely perceptible tremor."Emily, what are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to wait for me at home?""Wait for you at home?" I repeated the words, a smile on my face as I looked at his familiar features. Then, I said softly, "Why? So you could give away my winery to someone else and announce to the world that I'm

Bradley wasn't unaware of this, yet now, he had publicly humiliated me.Just as I could no longer hold myself back and was about to storm up to him, all of Bradley's friends surrounded them."Bradley, look at how youthful, lively, and beautiful Sabrina is!""Sabrina, Bradley gave you a winery worth over 100 million dollars like it was nothing. Where in the world could you find a man this good?""From now on, this winery belongs to the Owens family. Sabrina, how are you going to thank Bradley?"Amid the crowd's teasing laughter, Sabrina lowered her head, blushing shyly. At that moment, the winery manager, Julio Shaffer, who had come to deliver the wine, spoke up in confusion."What do you mean it belongs to the Owens family? Mr. Fry, didn't you borrow this from Ms. Blackburn?"The moment those words came out, the guests exchanged looks and immediately began whispering among themselves."What's going on?""I only heard that the winery belongs to Mrs. Fry, but isn't her last nam
