Chapter 2

Author: Ink Star
When I was looking at the bodies already covered with white sheets, a wave of emotions surged through me.

Their closest family treated their lives like a joke, sending them off without giving them any chance to survive.

I saw a wrist sticking out from under one of the sheets, with festering blisters that made me shudder.

Why would such dangerous wasps be found in a tourist area?

I realized this wasn't a simple accident. Someone must have done it on purpose.

I called the police and asked them to investigate.

After I went to the police station and gave my statement, they quickly found out that a man had bought and released those wasps.

The officers handed me a photo and asked if I recognized him.

I knew right away it was Eric Peterson, Chloe Peterson's younger brother.

Why did I remember him so clearly?

A year ago, Eric tried to take indecent photos of me, but I caught him.

When I reported it to the police, Daniel found out. Rather than taking my side, he threatened me with divorce and forced me to sign a settlement agreement.

At the time, I loved him so much I couldn't bear to leave. I knew that once we got divorced, there'd be no going back.

When I first got together with Daniel, I already knew he pined for someone else. But he never hid it. In fact, he introduced Chloe to me openly.

He swore he wouldn't make me jealous because of her. He also promised he'd cut off all contact with her.

But once Daniel had money, he forgot his promises and secretly stayed in touch with Chloe.

Because her brother was the one who caused me such distress, I kept my grievances to myself. I'd never forget his face.

I realized he had planned to target me this time too. But since he didn't know I hadn't gone on the trip, it ended up hurting Daniel's family instead. That made me feel a twinge of guilt.

Leaving the police station, I checked my phone and saw two messages that proved Daniel had caused his family's death by using the money meant for their surgery.

Suddenly, I noticed the second message mentioned a local hotel.

I finally realized what that woman's voice on Daniel's end had meant.

Checking the transaction history, I confirmed he'd booked a hotel room.

The first two-thousand-dollar charge was from a jewelry store.

I called and spoke to the staff, who told me that Daniel had placed a deposit on a diamond ring. That was when I finally understood that Daniel had been cheating on me.

I gripped my phone, wanting to tear that pair of adulterers apart. Any guilt I'd felt for Daniel disappeared.

I calmed down quickly, knowing I couldn't act recklessly. Otherwise, I might lose the evidence and let him twist the facts against me.

"Officer, someone charged 3,000 dollars on my credit card without my consent. He used it to book a hotel room. Can I get that money back?"

I went back to the police station and showed the officer my evidence.

The officer verified it and said they'd investigate. I nodded and went back to the hospital to handle the arrangements for Daniel's family's bodies.

In the morgue, six bodies were laid out in a row.

My phone rang sharply. It was Daniel.

I picked up, and his furious voice blasted through. "Linda, did you call the cops? Great, now everyone knows I cheated. I only used 3,000 dollars. Did you really have to take it this far?"

Looking at the bodies under their sheets, I still forced myself to ask, "Your family is in the morgue. Aren't you going to see them one last time?"

"That's your family. Your parents died because you're a jinx. Just have them cremated already. I'm sick of looking at them. Linda, stop changing the subject. Tell the cops we're legally married so they'll leave."

"What if I don't?"

"Then we'll get divorced."

Without thinking, I said, "Alright."

He clearly hadn't expected me to agree so decisively. After he had hung up, he called me several more times, but I blocked him.

I contacted the crematorium, and those six bodies became six urns of ashes.

I felt sad for them. Their closest family chose to spend the life-saving money on his mistress rather than save them.

I paid back the money I had borrowed and spent tens of thousands to buy them the best urns I could find.

I went to the prison to visit Chloe. She had lost a lot of weight. We spoke through the glass, and I congratulated her.She couldn't lash out at me from inside, so she just ground her teeth and said, "Linda, you better be dead by the time I get out, or you won't live to see another day."Her threats had no effect on me. I just reminded her, "Prison isn't a walk in the park. You should worry about making it out alive. By the way, I heard your backer got arrested too. Did you know?"All the fight left her eyes, replaced by fear.I could tell she wasn't going to have an easy time of it.I hung up the phone and left, ending our conversation. The next time I saw Daniel was when our three-month cooling-off period ended. The court called us in to finalize the divorce.Daniel looked slightly better than before, but I didn't say a word to him. I just asked the staff to finalize everything as quickly as possible. He looked at me with regret in his eyes, but once the divorce certificate

I rented a place, hoping to enjoy a few days of peace, but someone kept ruining that.A woman outside was pounding on my door, screaming in a raspy voice."Linda, open up! Were you the one who gave Daniel the idea? Did you tell him to come ask me for money? Open up!"Even though my neighbors tried to stop her, it did no good.I sighed at how similar she and Daniel were, though Chloe was even more shameless.Without warning, I opened the door, and she nearly fell inside.Chloe stumbled a bit and got even angrier."Linda, you wretched woman! Daniel lurks outside my house all day. Even if I call the cops, he keeps coming back. If I hadn't heard him say 'Linda was right,' I wouldn't have thought it was you who told him to ask me for money!"I didn't bother reacting. I just rolled my eyes at her."Chloe, you're the one who got Daniel's entire family killed. You should be glad you're not paying with your life."She wasn't mad at all. Instead, she sneered. "They asked for it. Daniel

The next day, I cheerfully turned on my phone. I was planning to look at some houses, but one message caught my eye.The title read, "Founder of Draxon Group Holds Funeral at Company Headquarters."Draxon Group was the company Daniel had started.I clicked on it out of curiosity. The discussion thread already had thousands of replies.Locals in our city were sharing it everywhere."I remember that guy! He got punched by his father-in-law at the courthouse and asked why the father-in-law wasn't dead. Turns out it was his own father who died.""I was there too. His wife threw a bunch of death certificates at him before he believed it. Six in total. Must have been his entire family."...I thought back to the scene then. There really were a lot of bystanders, and some of them had recorded video.Scrolling on, I noticed someone on the inside was livestreaming.I clicked in. The first thing I saw was Daniel on his knees, bowing to the memorial photos. He raised his head and stoo

Chloe slammed the door shut. Daniel pounded on it, yelling, "Chloe, open up! I bought this place for you! Open the door!"He made such a ruckus that a neighbor started shouting at him to quiet down, and he finally stopped. He turned to me in despair."Linda, do you still have my family's ashes? Can I have them back?"At that moment, he looked decades older, but it didn't stir even a shred of pity in me."No," I answered plainly.Daniel hadn't expected me to refuse and asked why.I said indifferently, "I tried giving them to you yesterday, and you wouldn't take them. Six boxes of ashes weigh dozens of pounds. I had to call multiple drivers before one agreed to help me transport them. Don't you think I deserve some compensation?"Daniel instantly dropped his pitiful act and became the man I knew so well."Linda, do you have no shame? They were your in-laws at one point! I used to be your husband! Didn't I transfer six hundred grand to you already? Isn't that enough?"Hearing tha

Daniel slowly opened his eyes, and the first person he saw was me.Even then, he didn't think he was in the wrong."Linda, what did you do? Weren't the ones who died your family? Why do the death certificates say it was mine?"He still looked confused, so I picked up his phone and tried calling his mother. She loved her son more than anything. Under normal circumstances, she would have picked up right away.Daniel watched what I was doing as if he also had some hope she would answer. But no one picked up, even after a long wait.I called his father too, but still no answer. Then, I called his brother, his sister-in-law, his sister, and his niece. No one picked up.Daniel stared at the list of missed calls in silence. One or two people not answering might have been a coincidence, but for everyone to be unreachable was a strong sign that something terrible had happened."Your family passed away yesterday. I didn't have time to cancel their phone accounts before you asked for a d

My father threw a punch at Daniel."The one who died was your father, not me! You worthless jerk! Why didn't you just go meet your maker sooner instead of ruining everyone else's life? You got your whole family killed, and you still have the nerve to walk around here cursing other people's parents!"Daniel looked as if he had taken a devastating blow. He fell to the ground without putting up any fight. My father kicked and punched him repeatedly. Daniel just lay there, silently accepting it.From not too far away, I could barely hear Daniel muttering in disbelief. "Dead... My whole family is dead?"When I saw Daniel start bleeding, I quickly told my father to stop. If this went on, my father might get sued by Daniel."You still don't believe it? Look at me. I'm standing here alive and well. The ones who got stung by those wasps and died were your family!"Daniel stared at me in a daze. I spoke coldly. "Daniel, I've told you so many times. The people who died were your family, no
