Chapter 4

Auteur: Blue Carberry
Of course, that would only happen under the pretext that the man giving the speech was not my husband.

Philippa took over the microphone. With a catch in her throat, she began praising Jason for being her mentor in her career.

She said the last time her father's company was in crisis, he was the one who pulled strings, mobilized connections, and raised emergency funds overnight.

"Meeting a man like him is the greatest blessing in my life."

A wave of nausea rose in my chest looking at their pretentious performance. They used my connections, killed my child, yet they were playing the sweet lovers without any regards of others.

The doctor had said that my pregnancy was unstable, yet Jason hadn't hesitated for a moment to make his move.

Just as the atmosphere reached its peak, Jason let go of Philippa's hand and got down on one knee, taking a ring out.

"Philippa, I know you don't care for formalities, but I love you. I want to give you the best. I would like to take advantage of today's networking event and propose to you. Will you marry me? I'll give you the grandest wedding! Will you be my wife?"

The venue broke into thunderous applause as the guests congratulated the couple.

Amid the cheers, I clearly heard Albert, who had once secured a project only because I introduced him, raise his glass and cheer, "Mr. Moore, what a truly loyal and devoted man! Congratulations on your family and career!"

Richard Leigh, whose son’s legal troubles I had personally resolved through my connections, clapped enthusiastically and sighed.

"Mr. Moore is a lucky man to bag such a beautiful wife! You two are a match made in heaven!"

Michael Walton, who had repeatedly obtained government approvals only through my brother, stood up excitedly to make a toast to them.

"Mr. Moore, Ms. Sanders, may you two be happy together for all eternity! Don't forget to invite me to the wedding!"

Everyone there had once profited from me, yet they had completely chosen to ignore my existence. It was as if I had never existed in their lives before.

Right at that moment, Yvonne interrupted the happy cheering, "Mr. Moore, when did you divorce Rachel Kidman? How come I didn't hear about it?"

Her words were like a loud slap, shattering the illusion of happiness in an instant.

The crowd froze, and the hall fell into pin-drop silence.

Jason and Philippa looked flustered. Gone was their previous smug satisfaction.

Jason soon collected himself. He pulled Philippa closer to him while casting Yvonne an icy gaze.

"The woman I choose is my wife. No one else needs to be mentioned."

In front of the screen, I clenched my fists so hard my knuckles turned white. All those years, I had used all of my connections and resources to support him in his career.

He had once promised me that he had my back and he would be my strongest supporter. We were once the power couple of the business world.

In the end, I was just a person who should not have been brought up in front of him.

My heart prickled, but that pain soon turned into a burning rage.

Yvonne snickered and was about to continue when Albert immediately stepped in and said, "Ms. Shonda, it's a happy day today. Why bring all this up? Besides, Ms. Sanders is pregnant. If anything were to happen to the baby, no one can afford to bear this responsibility."

The guests raised their glasses once more.

"Congratulations! What a happy additional surprise for you, Mr. Moore!"

"I heard that Ms. Kidman couldn't give birth to a child. Someone has to take over the Moore family's business after all."

Philippa slowly got her courage back as she saw everyone siding with her. She replied demurely, "Thank you for your wishes. We'll invite everyone to our wedding."

Jason took the opportunity to double down on the promise. "All of you here are our witnesses! We'll surely send you a great gift!"

As the rapturous applause broke out, a shrill feedback screech tore through the microphones.

I slowly walked up on stage amid the silence. Looking at everyone's shocked faces, I smirked.

"Why did no one inform me to join in such an exciting wedding proposal?"

I paused and said in an icy mocking tone, "Let me tell you some good news. Philippa didn't have a miscarriage. That's because she was never once pregnant. Your child never existed right from the beginning."Jason looked up suddenly. His face drained of color, mixed with despair and rage.He opened his mouth but found no words. In the end, he signed the divorce papers in resignation. When I got up, he asked in a daze, "If Philippa wasn't in the picture…"I interrupted him and said firmly, "No such thing. You coveted the Kidman family's fortune. She exploited your greed. You two are a match made in heaven, or hell."He finally broke down and sobbed in tears. He truly regretted it that time.It was too bad that it was too late.…After the entire incident, I returned to my coffee company, Radiant Coffee.Inevitably, there was gossip in the industry. They all reckoned that once I left Jason and that mess behind, I would have no choice but to return under the wing of my family.T

The photo Jason sent was taken when we were in the library in college. He used to save a seat for me. Sunlight would fall on the tips of his wavy hair. He smiled brightly like an innocent boy, untouched by the world.I stared at the photo for a long time until my phone screen dimmed on its own. Those precious memories of the past had only turned into pain. I deleted all of his messages and blocked his number.Three days later, I got even more information from the lawyer.Philippa's father's company had never been in financial trouble at all. It was merely a pretense to siphon money out of Jason. The massive sum in that Swizz bank account, once traced back through layers of transfers, had turned out to be from project funds belonging to a subsidiary my father had gifted to me years ago.The lawyer placed a small USB stick on my desk. "Ms. Kidman, this data was recovered from Jason's personal cloud storage. It's mostly his chat history with Philippa for the past year."I inserte

First, there was evidence of Jason embezzling company funds, all the illegal capital flows diverted to cover Philippa's father's financial troubles. Then, there was surveillance footage and documentation showing Philippa forging my signature at my coffee shops, imitating my handwriting to siphon money for herself. Finally, there were emails and account records detailing how Jason had meticulously committed fraud. He lured partners into investments before maliciously cashing out.The irrefutable evidence came crashing like waves, one piece after the other.Jason's smugness collapsed instantly. He lunged toward the stage, trying to cut the power, only to be stopped by the bodyguards I had planned in advance."What's the rush?"My voice was not loud, yet it carried clearly through the hall."Mr. Moore, the show has only just begun. Oh, and there's one more thing. How exactly did our child die?"Jason's pupils dilated as his body swayed unsteadily. He stuttered, "W-What are you ta

Everyone instantly became silent when they saw me.I looked straight at Jason, seeing his face losing all its color. His lips quivered, but no words came out.A moment ago, he was confident and bold on stage, yet at that moment, all that remained was panic and humiliation.Philippa cowered behind him, grasping tightly at his sleeves. She did not even dare to look at me.I snickered and swept a glance at all the shifty people. What a pathetic bunch of cowards. The people who had been fawning over the pair moments ago stood in dead silence, wishing they could disappear into the walls. They exchanged furtive glances, and a few quietly edged backward, trying to slip away unnoticed.Albert, who knew me quite well, stood awkwardly in the middle of the crowd.Clap. Clap. Clap. A slow, sarcastic clap broke through the silence. Yvonne walked over to me with a faint smirk on her face. She looked at Jason and Philippa before landing her eyes on me. I was not going to let those scumbags get away with it.Just as my thoughts spiraled, an unfamiliar number rang.I took a deep breath before answering the call."Who's speaking?"A mocking lady's voice came through. My sworn rival, Yvonne Shonda."Well, look at that. You're still alive! I thought you were dead. Jason Moore was so eagerly introducing his replacement wife."Being frenemies for so many years, I knew she would just call to mock me.I ignored her mockings and asked, "What did you see?"She snickered. "Looks like you aren't that stupid after all. There's an industry networking event over here. Your husband’s been going around introducing his new fiancee to everyone."She added, "I just sent you the address."I looked at the address. It was an hour's car ride from where I was. How dare they be so brazen, so close to where I was?I sneered. Fiancee? The gall he had. How could his legal wife miss out on such a lively event?…I headed straight to the address. I h
