Chapter 6

Author: Green Pick
Four years ago, Chandler and I were accidentally locked in the company warehouse overnight.

I'd always suffered from claustrophobia, and back then, I was so terrified I could barely breathe. It was Chandler who held me tightly, comforted me, and promised he'd find a way to get us out.

But now, it seemed he'd forgotten entirely about my claustrophobia.

I was locked in a dark, damp basement. My phone was taken away, cutting me off from the outside world entirely.

Time lost its meaning as I drifted in and out of sleep in the darkness and spent every waking moment crying in a breakdown.

I couldn't understand how Chandler had turned into a man like that. He used to love me so much, but the moment Heather appeared, it was as though he'd been bewitched to shower all his love and trust on her instead. Or perhaps, the scale deep within his chest had always been tilted in her favor.

Was it just because her parents were gone, and she had no one else to rely on?

I couldn't make sense of it. Eventually, cold and exhausted, I curled up and fell into a deep slumber.

Slowly, I sank into a long dream, where I was nestled safely beside Grandma, with Alfie listening intently by our side as she gently told us fairy tales.

But in the next moment, both Grandma and Alfie began drifting away from me, their calm voices shifting into heartbroken sobs. I tried to run to them, but a looming figure blocked my path.

It was Chandler, who frowned and berated me for disobeying his words, before Heather's mocking voice followed. "Look closely. This is what happens when you try to take what's mine!"

When I jolted awake, I found myself drenched in cold sweat.

Just then, the basement door swung open before Chandler rushed in and gathered my soaked body into his arms. "I'm so sorry, Danielle. I was too impulsive, and I never should've lost my temper or locked you in here."

He held me as though afraid of losing something precious and carefully carried me out of the basement.

I stayed silent the whole time, too emotionally and physically drained for days to respond. All I felt was weariness.

Back in the light, I realized Chandler hadn't kept me imprisoned for the whole week just as he'd instructed. He'd released me on the third day.

Grandma's belongings and the torn picture album had been carefully gathered and placed on the desk in my room. But it made no difference because the damage was done, no matter if the harm was great or small. I'd stopped believing in him from the moment he chose Heather.

Chandler laid me on the bed and gently pressed a kiss to my forehead. "I'm sorry, my love. I won't ever do that again."

He handed me two theater tickets and added, "To make it up to you, I booked us tickets to the musical tomorrow night."

I stared blankly at the tickets. It was the same theater where he'd proposed to me seven years ago.

At the same time, I picked up my phone, unused for three days, and saw multiple notifications from Heather. They were intimate pictures of a man and a woman, along with raw video clips. All of them were taken during the two days I was locked in the basement.

It was as if she were using me as her personal sex diary with Chandler.

Beside me, Chandler still had his arms around me, oblivious to what was happening on my phone. I looked at him and suddenly asked, "Why don't you take Heather instead?"

He flinched before looking at me with a mix of surprise and guilt. "What are you talking about, my love? This is our date; what does she have to do with it?

"Are you still upset? Don't worry. Heather and I are just friends, and she'll be leaving soon."

I closed my eyes, unwilling to look at the steady, practiced calm on his lying face.

"Alright." I softly agreed as a grand, final farewell to this relationship. Next week, I'd leave this all behind.

After everything was over, Antoine and I took Alfie to a psychologist. We were worried the ordeal might have left him traumatized, but fortunately, I'd protected him well. Having no idea what had happened, he tugged my sleeve and asked, "Mom, will we never get to see Dad again?"I nodded a little heavyheartedly. "That's right, but if you're okay with it, Mr. Atwood could be your new dad.""I'll choose Mr. Atwood. I like him more."I ruffled his hair as my lips curled up in a relieved smile.Antoine was furious after learning about the dangerous incident. After returning home, he gave the bodyguards he'd assigned to us a stern reprimand. It took all my soothing to calm him down and explain that I'd decided to buy a cake for Alfie and changed our route, which led to the encounter. The bodyguards barely kept their jobs, but Antoine wouldn't let me out of his sight afterward."I can't stop thinking about it, Danielle. The thought of almost losing you and Alfie…" His voice was low

Despite a few unexpected interruptions, the wedding proceeded smoothly overall. At the reception afterward, guests came to me and Antoine one after another to offer their blessings."I never knew Mr. Atwood was so devoted! If only my man were like him…""Congratulatons! You've been through so much with that jerk, Mrs. Atwood. Thank goodness it's all in the past now."They said after all that we'd been through, we were surely bound to make it to the end, and I believed so, too.By the time the wedding ceremony was over, we were utterly exhausted, despite Antoine having arranged everything perfectly and mobilized considerable resources. We decided to postpone our scheduled honeymoon since the public uproar had yet to settle, and attention was still intense.Chandler's company, weakened by his neglect and extravagance, was on the verge of collapse. He'd sold off most of his assets in his desperate search to find me.As online criticism toward him intensified, Heather filed a police

I never imagined I'd meet Chandler again under such circumstances. It was both absurd and laughable.Listening to his ridiculous claims fueled my anger as I walked confidently onto the stage under the gaze of everyone present."I am the woman in these pictures, as anyone with eyes can clearly see."Chandler stood frozen with disbelief written all over his face. "That's impossible! It can't be!"Weren't they saying Antoine was engaged ten years ago? You were married to me for ten years, so how could it be you?"I sharply cut him off. "Mind your language, Mr. Leighton. I was never married to you, and we never legally registered our relationship."You've lied to me and pretended to marry me while handing me a forged marriage certificate. It turns out another woman has been your legal wife all along. As for Antoine's fiancee…"I turned to Antoine, and we exchanged a smile as I continued, "That woman's always been me. He'd simply kept the engagement open and waited for me for ten who

Antoine brought in a world-renowned designer to create the most suitable custom wedding gown just for me.Sure enough, his taste was impeccable, and the gown fit me better than anything I'd tried on in stores. Finally feeling more confident, I threw myself into preparing for the wedding with joyful anticipation. On the day of the wedding, Antoine rented an entire private island as our venue. He transformed it into a fairytale-like garden filled with tulips and lilies, complete with a yacht procession and a drone light show.He arrived earlier at the island's hotel venue to confirm the schedule with the host when a commotion broke out among the guests. It was Chandler, who'd stormed into the wedding venue and snatched the microphone from the stage. "What all of you don't know is that this man, Mr. Antoine Atwood, pretends to be devoted when he's actually a cheater!"The crowd erupted in murmurs."A cheater? That can't be… I heard Mr. Atwood waited more than ten years to finally wi

Chandler's POVIn the office, Chandler stared at the picture in front of him before smashing several empty bottles against the wall in rage. The picture showed a man and a woman walking hand-in-hand, leading a young boy into a restaurant. "Have you identified who this man is?""Yes, Mr. Leighton. He's the son of the Atwoods."He froze. The Atwoods? Why would Danielle be associated with them? Was it for money? The Atwood family ran one of the most powerful, influential global corporations, the kind Chandler could never afford to cross, even if there were ten of him. Staring at the picture, he clenched his fist, while Gordon timely chimed in, "We've also uncovered something else. "It appears that Mr. Atwood was engaged ten years ago, and he recently married his fiancee. The wedding ceremony is scheduled for next week."A wild, almost frantic hope lit up in Chandler's eyes after hearing those words. "Are you saying that he's married, but he's still seeing another woman? I ne

It was Antoine. His laughing voice came from just above me. "Will you tell me your answer now?"My back was pressed against his chest, and I could feel my hands trembling slightly as I held the letter. "You…" I tried to turn around, but he held me tighter. His chin rested on top of my head, and his breath brushed against my ear, carrying a faint hint of wine."I've waited so many years," he said as his tone softened almost pleadingly, like the whimper of a lonely puppy."Back then… I was such a fool."Not only had I given him the silent treatment over something so trivial, but I'd also locked this letter away without ever reading it. Even when the Atwoods proposed a marriage, my heart and mind were completely fixated on Chandler, and I'd made Antoine wait 12 long years."You weren't a fool; you just chose the wrong person," Antonie said gently, his voice as soft and crisp as rustling leaves in the evening breeze."Speaking of which, I have something for you." As he spoke, he
