Chapter 5

Penulis: Nyra S.
In the end, we split up to do our own thing.

I was in the kitchen washing his hair, humming a tune as I washed.

The live chat was horrified by the scene.

【Seriously, they’re made for each other. Only a complete lunatic would act this calm while washing a ghost’s head.】

They didn’t understand that, for someone as nearsighted as me, it just felt like washing a large, fuzzy, black watermelon.

Then the “watermelon” spoke. “You seem to be in a good mood.”

“Of course,” I said honestly. “I think I’m getting along really well with you and your daughter. I’m sure I’ll clear this scenario with no problem.”

The watermelon grinned, his sharp, handsome features twisting in a strange smile. “You will, Nina.”

I gazed back at him gently, though to be fair, I couldn’t actually see him clearly. “By the way, I never asked your name.”

The “watermelon,” or rather the headless boss, suddenly lifted off my hands. His head flew across the room and attached seamlessly to the body that had just stepped out of the shower, turning back into that tall, handsome six-foot-one man again.

He seemed to remember something unpleasant, his voice rough and low. “I don’t really have one. But… if you must call me something, call me John Doe.”

With that, he turned and left, muttering that he’d sleep in the guest room.

What a stingy husband.

Couldn’t he at least let me fall asleep on his abs?

Scratching my head, I couldn’t think of a name right away, so I went back to bed to keep brainstorming.

Just as I was thinking, a pair of dark eyes appeared under my blanket, a pale little face glowing faintly in the dark.

For a second, it looked straight out of ‘The Grudge.’

Luckily, my poor eyesight softened the scare, it just looked like a blurry white blob.

“Mommy, ignore that headless old monster. Tonight, Lily wants to sleep with Mommy.”

So it was Lily.

I had no idea when she’d crawled into my bed.

I pinched her soft cheeks and pulled her into my arms, speaking gently. “You shouldn’t call your dad a monster, sweetheart. That might hurt his feelings.”

Lily blinked at me, confused. She opened her mouth, revealing a row of bloody gums with no teeth. “Heehee… But I’m a little monster too. They call me a little slut and a brat.”

I sighed and tried to steer her thinking back on track. “Who said that? That’s not right. If Mommy ever meets them, I’ll scold them and hit them for you. But, Lily, you can’t say things like that about yourself, okay? It would make Mommy sad.”

I kept mumbling to her softly, not even sure when I drifted off.

What I didn’t know was that after I fell asleep, Lily lay quietly beside me, watching my face. Her dress turned red, then white, then red again.

Finally, she whispered, “Mommy would be sad. I can’t make Mommy sad.”

The live chat went wild:

【Holy crap, I’ve never seen the Blood Dress Girl’s aura fluctuate like that! Her dress actually stayed white at the end!】

【Unbelievable. This new player just changed her entire attribute set. She’s got some serious skills.】

The next morning, I woke to the sound of that eerie mechanical voice again:

【Initial players: 30 | Current survivors: 15】

Half-asleep, I grabbed my phone and saw the player chat blowing up. Another five people had died overnight. Three of them were killed by the entities.

Finn suddenly snapped. His face twisted, veins bulging, and he roared,“‘Heart of Happiness’? What a joke! It’s just a living heart, isn’t it? I’ve got one too!”He didn’t dare attack the ghosts—so instead, while Susie was off guard, he grabbed her and hurled her straight toward his own door. One of the locks instantly transformed into a gaping monster head. It opened wide and swallowed her whole.I didn’t even have time to stop him.Finn turned his wild, bloodshot eyes on me next. I saw the thought cross his mind—he needed to unlock two locks, after all. Before he could make a move, Lily gave a cold laugh. Her white dress rippled and swelled, transforming into a living meat grinder. With one bite, Finn disappeared. In seconds, the hallway was filled with flying scraps of red flesh. Blood splattered across Lily’s once-white dress, dyeing it completely crimson. She looked at the falling gore and whispered, her childlike voice calm and eerie,“I was planning to be a good girl unt

【Tomorrow we’ll be witnessing history—The Happy Home’s very first clear!】The live chat was practically vibrating with excitement. And yet, as I stood there, the thought of leaving didn’t make me nearly as happy as I’d imagined. At exactly eleven o’clock, my four “guardians”—the Headless Boss, Lily, Intestines Old Man, and the Charcoal Old Lady escorted me down to the first floor. What used to be solid metal walls had now opened up to reveal three ancient black doors. Each door had a row of heart-shaped locks, the number varying from one to four.Mine had four locks. The student girl, Susie, had one.The fitness coach, Finn, had two.I already had a bad feeling about what this meant. Each door bore the player’s name and their Terror Index.Mine read: Nina – Terror: 0The girl’s: Susie – Terror: 99.9The coach’s: Finn– Terror: 90They both turned to stare at me, shocked and confused, as if wondering how on earth I had kept my terror level at zero. What could I say? The ghosts

The Charcoal Old Lady had died in a neighborhood fire. Her son had known exactly how to use the extinguishers and the hydrants but when he turned the valve, no water came out. All he could do was watch helplessly as his mother burned alive. The Headless Boss had been the son of a cult leader. He was brilliant, graduated from a top university, and had finally managed to escape his twisted family. But his parents, completely brainwashed, believed that eating their own son’s brain would grant them immortality. One night, while his guard was down, they used a dull knife to hack off his head and actually tried to crack open his skull for the “ritual.”Maybe it wasn’t an accident that I ended up meeting them here, forming this strange, mismatched family. The day before my car accident, I’d just gotten my paycheck. I remember skipping past a cemetery on my way home. On a whim, I stopped by a flower shop, bought four bouquets, and laid them on four random graves that stood side by side.Th

Keeping as many players alive through Day Four didn’t necessarily mean you had to visit every neighbor and collect all the visitor cards. Not every player was lucky like me, suddenly sitting on a pile of lethal items to scare the entities. Many never even saw the newspaper at the building’s base and had no way to appeal to the spirits on an emotional level. There was another method. Kill and claim. From Day Four on, if player A kills player B, A gets B’s visitor card for that floor and inherits all the cards B had already collected. It’s basically farming. If A raises B like a pig, fattens them up, then beats them when B’s weaker, A gets everything. And all of us were the pigs being raised by Elaine and Jethro.By accident, I became the pig king.Ugh. To put it bluntly, the rules actually allow and encourage slaughtering each other. This time, though, Elaine and Jethro misread the situation.I shrugged off my coat to reveal the red dress, and from its hem I pulled out the Headl

I made it down to the tenth floor.By then I’d collected a pile of visitor cards. From about the twentieth floor down, the bosses weren’t as terrifying. I even found two surviving players. They didn’t dare cross me, of course, and they weren’t the ones helping me visit neighbors. These neighbors were eager and friendly. They opened the door for us and handed over their visitor cards without being asked. Before long, they were coming along as we knocked on doors, and the three of us worked our way down to the tenth floor. The chat piped up: 【Four big bosses on the 30th floor are watching. You’d better not skip handing anything over.】As soon as we stepped onto the tenth floor, we ran into a two-meter-tall creature with a human body and a dog’s head standing in the hallway. The door behind it was wide open, and the room was full of heaps of white bones. The dog-headed thing handed each of us a visitor card.I opened my mouth to say something when it turned toward me and lowered it

“There are no online communities here,” I told her softly. “Only life and death. So wear whatever you like. Go barefaced if you want, or pile on as much makeup as you please. And if those people ever end up here… Well, you can make them pay however you want.“Of course, if you ask me, those people don’t deserve another chance at life anyway.”Hearing how things turned out, the girl grinned. Slowly, she reached behind her back and drew out a pair of twin nine-section whips. A hungry gleam flickered in her eyes.It was the exact weapon her favorite anime character used, the one she’d been cosplaying when she died.“Alright, miss,” she said, her smile turning sharp. “I’ll be myself. And if they really do show up here someday, dying by the weapon of the god they worshiped… that’ll be their greatest honor.”Now that was more like it—the proper attitude of a 28th-floor boss.---When I reached the 27th floor, the spirit who answered the door was a woman in business attire, still weari
