AYDEN

The second howl is closer than the first, and my body understands what that means before my mind finishes catching up. This was never a lone scout sent to rattle us. This was a test, and the real strike is already moving through the trees behind it.

"Lucian!" I shout, releasing the intruder just long enough to slam him hard into the porch railing again, pinning him with one forearm across his throat. "Get them inside now."

AYDENThe second howl is closer than the first, and my body understands what that means before my mind finishes catching up. This was never a lone scout sent to rattle us. This was a test, and the real strike is already moving through the trees behind it."Lucian!" I shout, releasing the intruder just long enough to slam him hard into the porch railing again, pinning him with one forearm across his throat. "Get them inside now.""On it." Lucian doesn't hesitate. He's already moving toward Sharon, who has Alisa pressed against her side, both of them frozen at the base of the steps. I watch Samantha grab her daughter's hand the second Lucian reaches them, watch the three of them disappear through the front doors of the packhouse, and only then do I let myself breathe again. The intruder beneath my forearm laughs, low and sly. "Feeling brave now that they're safe?""You'd be surprised how brave I get either way."I don't wait for his answer. I drag him upright and shove him toward two of

AYDENThe scream rips through the air and every instinct in my body reacts before my mind catches up. I'm turning toward the packhouse, toward the sound, my wolf slamming against my ribs demanding to be let out. But my eyes are still locked on Samantha, on the truth sitting right there in her silence, and for one terrible second I don't know which direction to run in. Every year of training, every instinct that's kept this pack alive, and for one heartbeat I am frozen between the woman I never stopped loving and a threat I can't yet see."Alisa!” Samantha yells, already running toward the house, toward her daughter…toward someone who could be my daughter, if the last thirty seconds of my life mean anything at all. That breaks whatever held me still. Lucian is already sprinting, shouting orders into his mindlink, warriors converging from every direction at once. I follow, my wolf Ridge snarling beneath my skin, demanding I let him take over, and we round the corner of the packhouse to

SAMANTHAMoonclaw territory looks exactly the same as it did five years ago, and somehow that makes it worse. The same tree line. The same gravel drive up to the packhouse. The same ache in my chest that I thought I'd buried a long time ago, clawing its way back up the second the car crosses the border.I watch the trees blur past the window and try to remember why I thought I could do this calmly. I rehearsed this drive a hundred times in my head over the last three days.I rehearsed what I'd say, how I'd hold myself, how I would not, under any circumstances, let Ayden Hogan see even a flicker of what his name still does to me. Every version of that rehearsal feels useless now, sitting here with my hands pressed flat against my thighs to keep them from shaking."Mama, is this where you used to live?" Alisa asks, nose pressed to the window."A long time ago, baby.""It's pretty.""It is," I admit, and it is, that's the cruel part of it. The forest here is thicker and greener than anyt

AYDEN"You're doing that thing with your jaw again," Lucian says, dropping into the chair across from my desk."What thing?""The thing where you clench your teeth so hard…I'm surprised you have any teeth left." He drops a folder onto my desk. "The Hollow Pine representatives arrive tomorrow. Alpha Darius is bringing his Beta and two pack elders.""That’s fine. The rooms are ready."I flip the folder open without really looking at it, going through the motions of running my pack the way I've run it every single day for the last five years. It was steady, efficient, and I was in control of every detail so nothing slips through that could be used against us. Stormfang has been circling closer to our borders for months now, testing every weak point they can find, and an alliance with Hollow Pine is exactly the kind of leverage we need if this turns into something worse than skirmishes."Darius wants full terms signed by the end of the week," Lucian continues, tapping the folder. "Joint

SAMANTHA (Present Day)"Mama, look! I made a wolf!"I turn and see my daughter run towards me.Alisa holds up her drawing, and I crouch down to look at it properly, flour still dusted across my hands from the morning's baking. The wolf has six legs and a crooked purple grin, and it is, without question, the best drawing I have ever seen in my life."That's incredible, baby. Can I hang it up in the shop?" I smile widely at her and her drawing. She nods so hard her braids swing, and I press a kiss to the top of her head before standing back up. My knees ache a little. It is what five years of standing twelve hours a day behind a counter can do to a person, but I don't mind it. This bakery is mine. Every loaf, every terrible 4 a.m. wake-up, every dollar in the register. They were all mine. The morning rush has already come and gone. The smell of cinnamon and yeast still hangs thick in the air, and flour dust drifts lazily in the light coming through the front window. This place used to b

AYDEN (Five Years Ago)"Say it again."Samantha's voice shakes, but she doesn't look away from me. My chest feels like it's caving in, but I don't let it show on my face. An alpha can't let anything show on his face. The clearing is packed tighter than I've ever seen it. Every warrior, every elder, every packmember who could walk here stands shoulder to shoulder under the moon, and every single one of them is watching me intensely. Torches line the edge of the gathering ground, and the smoke drifts low and slow, catching the moonlight like a held breath."Samantha Nonis," I say. "I reject you as my mate."She stares at me like she's trying to memorize what I look like right before I ruin her life. Her eyes are dry, but they're wide, searching my face for some sign that I don't mean it, that this is some cruel test I'll take back the second the words are out.I don't take it back."You don't mean that," she whispers. "Ayden, look at me. You don't mean that."I do look at her. That's th
