Sienna.

I didn’t expect to see him again so soon. And yet, there he was, leaning against the crooked fence outside the apothecary like he owned the damn forest behind it. Isaac, with that smug, knowing smile, was dressed in another perfectly tailored coat. This one was a deep plum, like the color of bruised skies before a storm. Fitting.

“You again,” I said, stepping outside with a basket of dried mugwort under my arm.

He straightened up and gave a slight bow like we were on a stage instead of on the muddy trail that led into the woods. “Miss Firestarter,” he said, grinning. “What a surprise. Or is it fate?”

“It’s coincidence,” I muttered, shifting the basket. “And I don’t believe in fate.”

He started walking next to me, like it was the most natural thing in the world. “I do,” he said, glancing sideways. “Especially when it involves redheads with sharp tongues and sharper magic.”

I didn’t smile. I gave him a flat stare, my eyes narrowing. “You’re wasting your lines on the wrong gi

30Sienna. I don’t normally dream. Not in the full-color, cryptic-symbolism kind of way people always claim. My sleep, when I manage it, is more of a flicker. Half wakefulness, half meditation. Being a witch with fire in your blood does that to you. You don’t always get the luxury of rest. But this dream one carved itself into the walls of my mind. It started with heat. Not the kind I conjure with my fingers or brew into tea, but something raw and wild. It burned across the horizon of a place I didn’t recognize, a forest turned to ash under an angry red sky. Smoke crawled up my legs in vines. My breath came in short bursts. Then I saw him.A man in chains. He was kneeling, shirtless, with his body caked in soot and blood. His head was down, hair falling into his face. The chains weren’t normal. They were blackened metal, glowing faintly at the edges like they’d just come out of the forge. His hands were tied behind his back, his chest heaving with every breath like he was holding som

29Isabella. I saw him today at the general store.I was browsing organic honey and thinking about docking its price in my manuscript as “liquid gold.” Then I saw him, Noah, standing with some other woman near the counter. I didn’t hear her voice, but I saw her. Laughing and touching his arm. They looked… easy with each other. My chest twisted, because he was supposed to be mine. Or rather, supposed to be mine in that soft, complicated way we’d been drifting toward. Not hers.I dropped the honey jar with enough glare to bruise five feet away. The lid cracked, honey leaking into the display like spilled sunshine. The cashier rushed over. The woman, who was blond, tall and dressed casual, grabbed a stack of napkins and started wiping.I dropped a ten on the counter, snapped my card down, and turned away fast. Maybe I wasn’t what I thought to him. Maybe she wasn’t what I thought to him. Maybe they were cousins or colleagues.Maybe I was insane. But I came here to get groceries, not to w

28Sienna. There’s a rhythm to the apothecary I like best in the early hours. There were no customers, no clinking of bottles or awkward small talk. Nothing but the creak of floorboards and the quiet pulse of herbs straining through cheesecloth. Peace.Until recently, that peace had been dependable and predictable. Now it’s cracked. It had been distrusted the same day Issac had walked in. Noah’s brother. You get brother, I think, with the same sharp grey eyes, but with twice the charm and half the decency. I knew from the moment he smiled at me that something wasn’t right, with his big smiles and flirting.Today, I felt him before I saw him.The bell over the door didn’t even ring. I just… knew. The hairs on my arms stood up like they always do before lightning splits the sky. And there he was—leaning against the doorframe like he’d been posing for a portrait.“You always look this serious in the mornings, or is it just for me?”I didn’t bother smiling. “Depends who walks in.”He wal

27Noah. I stood by the window in my study, hands pressed against the cool glass and looking out at the woods I’d walked a hundred times.Isaac barged in without knocking, slipping into the high-backed chair across from me like he’d been invited. He poured himself a glass of whiskey, the good whiskey, imported, aged, then leaned back, glass in hand and legs crossed. He looked at me like he was back in Father’s parlour, playing some twisted gentlemen’s game.“She’s…beautiful,” he said, swirling amber liquid in his glass.I didn’t bother to respond. My silence had always been enough.Isaac set the glass down on a tarnished silver tray. “You always went for the quiet, wounded types. But this one… she’s different.”I stepped closer, put a hand on the edge of the desk between us, the wood creaking under my grip.“I saw her once,” I said evenly. “Outside, rain, helping her with a tire. That’s it.”“That’s all it took,” he said, voice almost dreamy. “She’s not like the others.”I let the wo

26Sienna. The bell over the door jingled softly as usual. I was restocking valerian root when I felt the shift in the air before I heard him speak.“Smells like magic and moss in here.”I didn’t turn around. “It’s an apothecary, not a cologne shop.”He chuckled. The sound was warm and smug, like he was amused by his own existence. I turned slowly, basket of dried herbs in one hand. And there he was.Isaac. I’d heard about him a few hours ago, about the new guy who had come into town. News travelled fast here. His suit was sharp enough to cut through my patience, and a smile bright enough to warn of danger. His hair looked freshly tousled by intention, like he’d rolled out of bed and into a GQ shoot. His eyes was identical to Noah’s eyes, but only lighter somehow.I set the basket down. “Can I help you?”“Hope so.” He leaned against the counter like it was a bar and I was the drink. “You’re Sienna.”“You’re observant.”He grinned. “And you’re exactly what I expected.”“Is that a comp
