Dante didn't even blink. He leaned back in his chair and looked around the empty room.

"Are you going to put me in timeout?" Dante asked.

"You think this is a joke," I said. My voice echoed slightly against the glass walls. "You think you just won a prize because a few executives nodded at you."

"I think I just saved your European shipping division."

"You just embarrassed the VP of Strategy in front of the people who approve our funding," I corrected him. "That isn't a victory. It is just another form of corporate suicide."

Dante let out a short, rough laugh.

He pushed his chair back and stood up. He didn't look intimidated at all. He reached up and loosened his tie, pulling it off and throwing it on the table.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

Dante didn't answer. He shrugged his suit jacket off and tossed it onto the chair.

"I gave you a direct order to stay seated," I said.

"I heard you," Dante replied.

He started walking down the length of the table. He didn't rush. He moved with a quiet, deliberate pace that put my nerves on edge.

"You expected me to drown today," Dante said as he walked. "You handed me a failing file and wanted me to look like an idiot."

"I wanted you to understand that you don't belong here."

"Too bad. Harlan put me here."

I didn't take a step back. I held my ground as he closed the distance between us.

"Harlan put you here as a mascot," I told him. "You aren't supposed to actually speak."

"I'm not going to sit in a corner and be quiet just to make you feel safe, Levi."

He was getting too close. I normally demanded at least three feet of personal space from anyone in the building. Dante completely ignored that rule.

He took another step.

I stepped back on instinct. My shoulders hit the cold glass wall behind me.

I was trapped.

Dante didn't stop. He stepped right into my space and planted his hand flat against the glass next to my head. He was taller than me, and he used every inch of that height to box me in.

"Move," I told him.

He didn't move.

Suddenly, the air in the room felt entirely too thin. A weird, suffocating static settled over us. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I could smell him. It wasn't just his cologne. It was a heavy, aggressive scent of smoke and leather. It flooded my senses, clashing violently with my own scent of rain and cedar.

The reaction hit me out of nowhere.

My heart started hammering against my ribs. It beat so fast and hard that it actually hurt. A strange, hot flush crept up my neck. I couldn't catch a full breath.

I didn't understand what was happening to my body. I never lost my composure. I never panicked in front of anyone.

But right now, every single nerve ending I had was screaming.

Dante looked down at me. His eyes were dark and incredibly focused. I could see the pulse jumping in his throat.

"You want me to learn my place," Dante whispered.

"Get away from me."

My voice actually shook. I hated the sound of it.

"My place is right here."

The proximity was going to kill me. The heat radiating off his chest was too much.

I refused to let him see me break. I brought both my hands up, planted them flat against his chest, and shoved him as hard as I could.

Dante stumbled backward.

The second the physical contact broke, my lungs expanded. I took a sharp breath of air and stepped away from the glass.

I didn't say another word to him. I didn't look at his face. I just walked past him, my shoes clicking sharply against the floor.

I pushed through the boardroom doors and stepped out into the hallway.

Greer was standing near the reception desk. She looked up from her tablet.

"Levi?" she asked. "The recess is almost over. Do you want me to call them back in?"

"Cancel the rest of the meeting," I told her.

I didn't stop walking. I headed straight for my private elevator at the end of the hall. I needed to get to the penthouse. I needed a locked door and a glass of water.

"Cancel it?" Greer asked, rushing to keep up with me. "What should I tell the board?"

"Tell them I had an emergency."

"What kind of emergency?"

"Just handle it, Greer."

I reached the elevator and hit the call button. The doors slid open immediately. The inside was empty and quiet.

I stepped inside and turned around, pressing the button for the top floor.

Greer stopped a few feet away, watching me with a confused look on her face. I ignored her and stared at the metal doors, waiting for them to close.

They started to slide shut. I finally let out a slow breath.

Then a hand shot through the gap.

The metal doors bounced off a thick wrist. They chimed in protest and slid back open.

Dante stepped inside the small, confined space of the elevator right as the doors locked shut.

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    27 - ALIBI

I listened to the doors click shut, leaving me alone.I stayed flat on my back on the conference table. I stared at the ceiling and forced myself to breathe. The paralysis slowly began to lift from my muscles, but the relief was entirely temporary. As soon as Dante walked out of the room, a new sensation took over.It started as a dull ache in the center of my chest. Within seconds, it sharpened into a physical, pulling pain. It felt like an invisible tether had been attached to my ribs and was stretching out the door. The further Dante got from the room, the worse the pulling sensation became.I rolled onto my side. I pressed my hands against the wood and pushed myself into a sitting position.I slid off the edge of the table. My shoes hit the carpet. I let go of the wood and tried to stand up straight. My legs gave out instantly.I pitched forward, grabbing blindly for the edge of the table to catch myself. My fingers found the wood just in time. I held on tightly, my knees bent, su

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    26 - AFTERSHOCK

Levi didn't answer. He couldn't. His breathing was just as broken as mine. I could feel the erratic, frantic beat of his heart directly against my own chest.I lay heavily against him, completely unable to lift my arms. My muscles were unresponsive. The fused scent of cedar and smoke filled the room, thick and suffocating. It settled deep in my lungs, replacing the oxygen. My vision was still swimming. The white edges slowly faded back into the harsh fluorescent light of the ceiling, but the blinding shockwave still echoed in my nerve endings.I needed to get off him. I needed to stand up and walk out of this room.I commanded my arms to move. My brain sent the signal, but my body actively fought the instruction. Every instinct I possessed was screaming at me to stay exactly where I was. The pull was terrifying. It wasn't just a suggestion. It was a physical demand to keep my chest pressed against his. My Alpha instincts had spent the last six months telling me to dominate Levi, to ru

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    25 - BRAWL

He leaned his heavy weight against me. He trapped me completely against the edge of the long conference table. His dark eyes challenged me. He was waiting for me to crack.I didn't wait for his answer.I didn't want to hear whatever arrogant lie he was about to tell me. I didn't want to listen to him brag about saving my career. My fever was burning completely out of control. My pride was in pieces on the floor. I was exhausted, humiliated, and tired of him pushing me into corners. My legendary corporate discipline shattered.I pulled my right arm free and swung. My fist connected hard with the side of his jaw. The loud smack echoed in the quiet room. The violent impact sent a sharp, painful jolt straight up my wrist.Dante stumbled backward. He was completely caught off guard. His heavy grip on my waist broke instantly.I didn't give him a single second to recover. I pushed off the wood and stepped right into his space.I grabbed the front of his dark suit jacket with both hands. I s

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    24 - RETREAT

The loud click of the deadbolt echoed sharply in the quiet room.I stared at his hand resting on the lock.He actually locked us inside.Levi never broke the rules. He never acted without a plan. He cared about company optics more than he cared about breathing. Locking a door during business hours to corner another executive was entirely out of character for him.He was completely unraveling right in front of me.My mild headache instantly flared into a blinding, pounding migraine. The sharp pain spiked directly behind my eyes, radiating down to my jaw. I pulled my hands out of my pockets and rubbed my temples, trying to ease the sudden, intense pressure. It didn't help at all.The conference room was totally silent. The only sound was the faint hum of the air conditioning. The ventilation system was built for standard office meetings. It was absolutely not built to handle what was happening to us.The air grew impossibly thick in a matter of seconds.Levi's scent flooded the enclosed

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    23 - FEVER SPIKE

I stared at the empty doorway for a long time. The three Japanese representatives were gone. They ran out of the room like criminals escaping a crime scene.I slowly turned my head and looked down at the table. My silver pen was resting next to the leather folder. The printed terms of the contract were still sitting there, completely unsigned. A single drop of dark blue ink stained the bottom of the page. It marked exactly how close I came to destroying my own life.I gripped the edge of the wood. My knuckles turned white under the strain. My chest hurt from how fast my heart was beating. I dragged a shaky breath into my lungs, but the air felt too thin. The fever burning inside me made the room spin for a fraction of a second.I had almost signed it.I had worked on this specific merger for six months. I ran the data through three different risk assessment models. I stayed up late every night this week finalizing the transit terms. I thought I had covered every single angle. But I wa

  • KNOTTED BY THE ALPHA STEBROTHER I HATE    22 - DISRESPECT

My voice echoed loudly against the wood paneling of the private conference room.Levi stopped moving. His hand hovered just above the signature line. The silver tip of his pen was less than a millimeter away from the paper. He looked up at me. His dark eyes were wide with sudden shock. He looked terrible. His face was flushed, and a faint sheen of sweat lined his stiff collar. The strange fever I noticed in the hallway yesterday was burning right through his corporate armor. He gripped the silver pen tighter. His jaw locked.I knew exactly what he was thinking. He hated me. He wanted to sign the paper just to prove I had no authority over him. If I pushed him directly, he would finish the signature out of pure spite.I had to get the attention off him immediately.I walked right past the head of the table. I ignored Levi and looked down at the three men in dark suits sitting across from him."Who is running this circus?" I asked loudly. The lead representative blinked. He looked total
