Chapter 4

Author: Redleaves
The advisor marched me into the hall.

The family's capos lined both sides of the long walnut table like a row of guards.

Elio sat at the head like a king, looking down over his generals.

A chair had been set beside him, and Fiona sat in it, watching me, smiling sweetly.

Elio spread his hands, his tone gone cold.

"You wanted fair, so I'll give you fair. Let's all hear how everyone judges it."

I looked around the room, dazed, blood roaring up to my head.

Elio said, "I've laid it all out for them. Now let's hear your thoughts."

Fiona was pretty and knew how to sweet-talk, and she'd spent plenty of time winning over the capos at Elio's side.

Now every one of them spoke up for her.

"I think the Donna was out of line. The Donna's in the wrong."

"I know what Fiona's like. She's an innocent girl. There's no way she has any scheme in her."

"I hear the Donna just tried to leave. Guilty conscience, maybe?"

Elio raised an eyebrow and looked at me. "See? It isn't just my opinion."

This was the man I'd loved for seven years.

To make me apologize to Fiona, he'd actually called a family tribunal.

My nails dug into my palms until they bled, and my voice shook as I asked.

"Why, Elio? Why would you take it this far?"

"Because you wronged her. Fiona cried for a solid hour. Her eyes are swollen from it."

Elio drummed his fingers idly on the table, and each tap landed on my heart like a hammer.

"An hour has passed, and you still won't see your fault. So it's left to me to make it right for you."

He sighed, and his voice softened a little.

"Danielle. It's only an apology. It's nothing to make a fuss over."

"Don't be angry. Do it for me. Be good, all right?"

I bit down hard on my lip until my mouth filled with the taste of rust.

A memory rang in my ears, the promise he'd made when he proposed.

"Danielle, I can't stand to let anyone hold me. You're the only exception."

"Marry me, and I'll spend my whole life holding you, and only you."

The same lips that once said words that moved me to tears.

How were they saying something this cruel now?

He had lied.

I wasn't the only exception.

Fiona was.

I clenched my jaw and bit out each word. "I will not apologize. I did nothing wrong."

Elio's brows dropped until they left his eyes as two thin slits.

Thin and sharp as a blade.

"You did nothing wrong? Then it was Mario who did." He snapped his fingers. "Bring him in."

They dragged in a young man.

It was the new recruit who'd mistaken Fiona for the Donna that night.

"With him I won't go easy. You make a mistake, you pay for it."

A cruel smile curved the corner of Elio's mouth. "Nothing much. Just the right hand."

The color drained from Mario's face. He crumpled to the floor, shaking without stop.

"Danielle, I'll leave the final call to you."

Elio held my eyes. "So which is it? Were you in the wrong, or was Mario?"

I looked at Mario. His eyes were full of desperate pleading.

He was so young. In the end I couldn't bring myself to let him be crippled.

The voices ringing in my ears suddenly fell from a great height and shattered, gone without a trace.

I went calm. "Fine. I'll apologize. But not here."

Fiona covered her mouth and giggled. "I understand, Donna. There are too many people here. You're embarrassed."

I answered her with a cold smile.

Elio eased back, his eyes turning gentle again. "All right. You pick the time and place."

I thought about it. "Nine tonight. Your study."

Elio stood, and Fiona rose with him, practically pressed against his body.

But the sight stirred nothing in me anymore.

"Good. We'll be waiting for you."

With that, Elio left, Fiona in tow.

While no one was paying attention, I slipped quickly out of the Moretti estate.

I didn't even want my bags. I only wanted to leave.

Straight to the airport, and I bought a seat on the earliest flight.

The moment I boarded, seven years with Elio came to a full and final stop.

When I stepped off the plane, a weight lifted from my chest.

The moment I turned my phone back on, it started buzzing like mad.

Elio's coat still carried his warmth."I really do love you, Danielle. I can change. I can change every bit of it."He looked at me, his gaze both tender and desperate. "Come back with me, my Donna."A pity that this warmth came seven years too late.No feeling, however alive, can survive seven years of wind and sun.My love for him had died long ago.I slipped off his coat and handed it back to him."It's too late, Elio. There's no time left.""Sign the divorce papers."I patted Elio on the shoulder. "I believe you. I believe you love me even now."I turned to look at the sea in the distance. The sea was so blue it seemed to hold some beautiful meaning within it.I smiled. "But I don't love you anymore. Let go."The words had barely left me when Elio jolted hard, as if he'd touched a live wire. His tears broke loose like a bursting dam.In seven years, it was the first time I'd ever seen Elio cry.But inside I felt nothing, as detached as if I were watching a ham actor weep on a scree

The next time I saw Elio was early the following morning.I'd chosen to meet him by the sea.He looked like he hadn't slept all night, the bags under his eyes a dull, dark gray, his exhaustion impossible to hide."Danielle..." He gave me a careful glance. "I did what you said. I took Fiona to a hospital.""Good." I nodded. "Was there time to reattach the finger?"He faltered, then shook his head. "I don't know. I dropped her off and left."I raised an eyebrow.Silence circled over our heads like a vulture.Elio broke the silence."Danielle, do you believe me now? I feel nothing at all for Fiona.""I love you. I love only you, Danielle."His words came faster and faster, thick with tears. "Come back to New York with me, I'm begging you."I looked at his grieving face, then out at the sea.The tide was going out, laying bare a wide stretch of mudflat.Like a wound in the sea."There's no going back, Elio. It's like a drop of wine that can never return to the grape it came from."I looked

It was one in the morning when the phone woke me.I picked it up and saw a video call request from Fiona.I hung up.She sent a message.Donna, please pick up the video call, or I'll die.I was still staring at it when she called again.I sighed and answered. On the screen, Fiona was drenched in sweat, her eyes bloodshot, her voice full of shock and fear."Donna, I'm begging you, please go back with the Don.""He says if you won't, he'll prove to you himself that he doesn't love me..."Her whole face collapsed, crumpling like a wadded-up sheet of paper."He's going to cut off my fingers... please, Donna, save me..."I raised an eyebrow, mulled it over for a moment, and said, "Where's Elio?"The picture jolted, and Elio came into frame."Danielle, everything I told you is true. I didn't lie to you.""The truth is I've been sick to death of Fiona for a long time. If you don't believe me, I'll prove it myself."With that, he drew a dagger, its blade glinting cold.Fiona shrieked outright

[Elio's Point of View]Elio stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of his hotel suite. The moon hung alone in the sky like a gnawed bone someone had tossed up there. He gripped the papers in his hand. The divorce agreement Danielle had given him. He'd come all the way from New York to Sicily for one thing: to bring Danielle home.Instead, all he was leaving with was a set of divorce papers. He'd refused to accept it and dug in his heels, until Don Gallo had his men haul him out.Elio was still turning over how to win Danielle back when a knock came at the door."Danielle!"He threw the door open, his face lit with excitement. The next second, the smile froze solid on his face.Fiona stood there worrying the hem of her dress, looking up at him meekly.Looking at her face, Elio felt a moment of vertigo. She really was the very image of a young Dolores. He'd first met Fiona when she came to interview for the assistant position. The moment he saw that face, it struck him like a bolt of light

That evening my father and I were at dinner when the butler came in."Miss Danielle. Don Moretti is asking to see you."I raised an eyebrow.Elio's private jet really was in for repairs. How had he gotten here?I thought about it and answered, "Let him in."A moment later Elio came in, empty-handed.He took off his hat in a show of respect to my father. "Don Gallo, I came in a rush and had no time to prepare a gift. Forgive me."My father gave him a glance and said nothing.I kept my head down, cutting my steak. "It doesn't matter. We didn't prepare any dinner for you either."He said my name plaintively. "Danielle..."I lifted my eyes to him.He looked far more haggard than before. His eyes were webbed with fine red threads, and heavy dark shadows hung beneath them.Stubble covered his face in a gray shadow, with nothing left of the polished man he'd been."Isn't your jet in for repairs?" I couldn't help asking. "How did you get here?""I flew commercial."He answered at once, wearing

Fiona came hurrying toward me, dragging a suitcase. When she reached me, she was gasping for breath, and she blurted out in a panic."Donna... the Don sent me to find you...""He said... I'm to apologize to you... so you'll stop being angry..."I looked at her and said nothing, only smiled coldly. She was drenched in sweat from running, and I could even catch the sour smell of it coming off her.I covered my nose and took a step back. "So this is his solution. Hide behind a woman and send you out to take the hit?"Fiona gave an awkward laugh."The Don's private jet happens to be in for repairs. You know he can't stand flying commercial.""He sent me ahead to apologize, and told me I absolutely had to talk you into coming back."She bowed to me, a full ninety degrees at the waist, and said in earnest."Donna, I was wrong. I've done you wrong.""Please forgive me. Please come back to New York with me."There was a sob in her voice.I couldn't hold back a laugh."Do you think you're that
