Jane walked under the streetlight with heavy steps, each one heavier than the last. The file of documents the help had given her was still clutched tightly against her chest.

She barely heard the few cars speeding past her. The world around her had gone numb.

All she did was walk, as though she was counting every step, and one mistake would make her collapse. Memories crowded her mind.

She remembered her last birthday. Everyone in the Vale family had woken her with a surprise celebration, and even the house staff had joined in. They had laughed, eaten, smiled, and treated her like she belonged.

There had been no trace of hate, no sign of evil plans. So how? Jane still found it hard to believe.

When she and Lila had competed for the position of Head of the Cosmetic Department, Henry Vale had stood before them and declared he would not choose favourites.

“Whoever is worthy of it will get it,” he had said. “The board will decide.”

Jane had been more qualified, she won fairly, or so she thought. Now she understood, it had all been part of the plot.

The family trips to the park, the constant encouragement from Henry and Kate, the praises, the trust, they had only wanted her to rise higher so her fall would be louder.

Jane bit down hard on her lip. But she had loved Lila and Leo like true siblings, she had protected them, defended them, and wanted the best for them, especially Leo.

Many times had she covered his mistakes at the company, countless times had he spoken harshly to her, yet she still forgave him. The same Leo who would grin and say, "You are my favourite sibling.”

He knew of the plans and never for once warned his favourite sibling. Jane stopped walking for a second, and fresh tears slid down her cheeks.

Then she remembered the maid who had tried to speak to her before the gala.

“If only I had waited to listen, maybe things wouldn’t be this severe,” Jane muttered to herself.

She sniffed and wiped her tears. “But would I have believed her?” She let out a bitter laugh.

“I trusted my family more than anyone.” She looked around.

The streets had grown quieter, only one car passed every few minutes. Ahead was a bus stop with an old bench beneath it. Jane walked there slowly. She had nowhere to go, no friends in Velmoura, no home, no idea where she truly came from.

She sat down heavily, then Greg’s betrayal pierced her heart again. More tears streamed down her face.

Don’t change your last name yet, stay at your parents’ house and come over only on weekends, we can’t have sex yet, I’m not ready, let's stay in separate rooms.

She finally understood why Lila was never at home during weekdays, yet always appeared on weekends.

Weekdays, Lila was with Greg, and on weekends, Jane went to be with Greg. It was more like a shift job. The secret wife and the public side piece.

Everyone at the company knew she and Greg were married. They had attended the wedding. Now that the truth was out, who would believe she was the victim?

Jane wiped her tears with the back of her hand and threw her head back. A sudden burst of laughter nearby made her sit upright.

“Who could this be, if not my wonderful adopted sister?” Jane froze.

Lila stepped into the light, and behind her stood about seven men. They laughed as they stared at Jane with hungry eyes, like predators who had found prey.

“Your fall is the talk of the town now,” Lila said with a smirk. “Did you think you could steal everything that belongs to me, the true heiress of the Vale family, and get away with it?”

“Lila, I never knew Greg was your man,” Jane said weakly. “I thought the board judged fairly and gave me the position. I had no idea you believed it should be yours.”

Lila’s face darkened. “It’s too late now, Jane. You enjoyed your time at the top and looked down on me.” She gestured toward the men. “Now enjoy this moment too. These boys will keep you company tonight.”

Jane was too stunned to say a word. Lila turned and walked past them, then looked back with a laugh.

“Have a nice time with her, boys.” The sound of her heels echoed in the silent night before she disappeared into the dark.

Jane remained frozen until the men began walking toward her.

“Please…” she whispered, moving back. “I’ll give you whatever you want. Just don’t touch me. Please.”

Their leader smirked and licked his lips. “No prize is more expensive than having you tonight. This will be one of our most memorable nights.”

Jane reached the end of the bench. “Please…” she begged again, tears blurring her sight.

She tried to run, but the men were faster, they formed a circle around her. One grabbed her shoulder, and Jane screamed. Another reached for her chest, she struggled wildly and bit his hand.

He roared and slapped her hard across the face. For a few seconds, she couldn’t see anything. She had not eaten all day, and no strength was left inside her.

Seven men? There was no way she would escape. Jane’s body weakened at the thought. Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

Another man grabbed the hem of her dress and began lifting it when, suddenly, bright headlights flooded the area.

Everyone staggered back, shielding their eyes. A sleek black car had driven so close that the tyres nearly touched the curb.

The men stopped immediately, cursing at the driver.

“Who the hell is this son of a bitch?” the leader shouted.

The car door opened. A tall figure stepped out. He said nothing, he didn’t need to, danger moved with him.

The man walked toward them with calm, calculated steps. The leader charged toward the man first.

He barely got close before the stranger struck him down, and the others rushed together. What followed happened too fast for Jane to process.

Fists, cries, bodies crashing to the ground with men wiggling on the ground holding different parts of their bodies. The stranger fought like someone used to fighting bad guys.

Their leader was left bruised and bleeding. When the remaining men finally found their feet, they ran for dear life. Everywhere became silent.

The stranger walked to Jane, he removed his coat and wrapped it gently over her trembling body, then he lifted her with one arm as though she weighed nothing.

With the other hand, he picked up her documents from the bench and carried her to his car, opened the door, and placed her carefully inside.

Then he walked around and slid into the driver’s seat. Jane still had tears on her face, blurring her vision. Without a word, the man reached into his pocket, took out a handkerchief, and gently wiped the tears from her face.

Her vision cleared, and she looked at him. Shock hit her instantly.

“Dravyn Woods?” Jane called softly, her voice trembling with surprise.

The morning sun slipped through the open curtains and landed straight on Jane’s face. She groaned and turned away, pulling the sheet over her head for a second before sitting up slowly. She had slept late. The press conference had stayed in her mind all night. She kept replaying Henry Vale’s speech, each watch feeding the anger burning inside her. Every lie, every calm expression, every word he spoke, like she never meant anything to them.By the time sleep finally came, it was already midnight. Now morning has gone far.Jane got out of bed, bathed, dressed, and went downstairs for breakfast. A maid standing near the dining area bowed slightly when she saw her.“Please wait in the living room, Miss, while I set the table.” Jane nodded and walked to the living room. She sat down and started scrolling through her phone on recent fragrance articles from other countries. New launches, rare ingredients, packaging trends, scent layering. She might be out of Vale Corp, but her love for perfu

“Sorry, Miss,” the woman washing Jane’s hair said quickly when water splashed across her face.“It’s fine,” Jane replied, blinking away the drops. It had been two days since Dravyn proposed marriage to her, yet the strange part was that he still treated her with care even though she had not given him any answer. That morning, he had taken her out shopping, but first he insisted she be pampered. He brought her to an expensive spa salon and requested they wash her hair.“She needs a hair wash,” Dravyn had told the manager. “Not because her hair is dirty, but because I want her to feel good without lifting a finger.” The manager had nearly laughed, wondering if hair wash was a way to show love.Jane sat quietly while staff moved around her in a hurry, eager to please her. It was only her and Dravyn inside the spa. He had booked the entire place for privacy. Han remained outside. He had made it clear he had no interest in staying in a spa with them. When the woman finished washing Jane’s

Jane walked into her room feeling triumphant. She had just put Dravyn in a tight corner, and the thought pleased her.Only a few days after being betrayed, the way she thought had changed so much. If only she had been this sharp before, maybe she would not have fallen so low.She jumped onto the bed, a bright smile spreading across her face. She was happy for two reasons.First, she had asked Dravyn a serious question and left him speechless.Second, Dravyn’s chest.Jane quickly sat upright on the bed, pulling her knees close to her chest. The image returned to her mind so clearly that she bit down on her lip and covered her mouth with both hands.Broad shoulders, firm skin still wet from his bath, the shape of his muscle beneath the loose robe. She imagined touching it. Soft, yet strong beneath her fingers.“What?” Jane muttered to herself. “How can you fantasise over a man’s chest?” She groaned and flopped backwards. Then another realisation hit her. She had never even seen Greg bar

“Congratulations to us. Finally free from the accusation we have been managing for years now.” Henry Vale raised his glass high, his face bright with excitement.“Congratulations to us!” everyone chorused before their glasses clinked together. The room was lively. Laughter filled the dining hall. Music played softly in the background. Expensive food covered the table, and bottles of wine had already been opened.Every member of the Vale family was present. Tonight, they were celebrating success. They had spent years planning how to make Jane take the fall. And the day had finally come.“We wouldn’t have pulled this off without Greg,” Lila said proudly, a wide grin on her face.“Of course,” Kate Vale added quickly. “We can’t forget your husband, who volunteered for the job. And you too, Lila, for being patient all these years.”“Thank you, Mom,” Lila replied shyly, though pride glowed in her eyes.“Lila is truly the daughter of a Vale,” Henry said with satisfaction. “And now she is car

"And I won’t cross boundaries unless you allow it.”“What you mean is more like a contract relationship, right?” Jane asked. “And once I get my revenge, it ends?”“Technically, yes,” Dravyn replied. “But we don’t know how long it would take to bring the Vales down.”Jane lowered her head and thought for a moment. Then she looked up sharply.“Won’t that stain your reputation? Being with me will make the public talk.”“Jane, I don’t care.” His voice was steady. “People will always talk. That is good for my brand, too. All I need is your response.”He leaned forward slightly. “I will give you everything you need. I can’t say I’m good with romance, but I will treat you right. I’ll make sure no one ever hurts you again.”Dravyn reached for her hands and wrapped them gently in his.“Jane, you will not only feel safe with me, but you will be safe. “Dravyn Woods?” Jane called softly, her voice trembling with surprise.Dravyn nodded once, his jaw tightening at the sound of his name.“Thank you,” Jane muttered weakly. He nodded again and adjusted the coat around her body, making sure it covered her well. After that, he picked up the bottle of water beside him, opened it, and handed it to her.“Have some water.”Jane took the bottle and quietly gulped down half of it. When she lowered it, she released a long breath of relief before returning it to him.Dravyn collected it with a nod, then started the car immediately and drove off. His eyes stayed fixed on the road.Jane, on the other hand, watched him as he drove. His jaw was still tight. His grip on the steering wheel was firm. She could tell he was not happy.Trying to distract herself, she studied his features instead. Dravyn was no longer the shy boy from high school.Back then, he had been handsome in a quiet way. Now his features were sharper, more defined. He looked even bet
