登入Jane walked under the streetlight with heavy steps, each one heavier than the last. The file of documents the help had given her was still clutched tightly against her chest.
She barely heard the few cars speeding past her. The world around her had gone numb.
All she did was walk, as though she was counting every step, and one mistake would make her collapse. Memories crowded her mind.
She remembered her last birthday. Everyone in the Vale family had woken her with a surprise celebration, and even the house staff had joined in. They had laughed, eaten, smiled, and treated her like she belonged.
There had been no trace of hate, no sign of evil plans. So how? Jane still found it hard to believe.
When she and Lila had competed for the position of Head of the Cosmetic Department, Henry Vale had stood before them and declared he would not choose favourites.
“Whoever is worthy of it will get it,” he had said. “The board will decide.”
Jane had been more qualified, she won fairly, or so she thought. Now she understood, it had all been part of the plot.
The family trips to the park, the constant encouragement from Henry and Kate, the praises, the trust, they had only wanted her to rise higher so her fall would be louder.
Jane bit down hard on her lip. But she had loved Lila and Leo like true siblings, she had protected them, defended them, and wanted the best for them, especially Leo.
Many times had she covered his mistakes at the company, countless times had he spoken harshly to her, yet she still forgave him. The same Leo who would grin and say, "You are my favourite sibling.”
He knew of the plans and never for once warned his favourite sibling. Jane stopped walking for a second, and fresh tears slid down her cheeks.
Then she remembered the maid who had tried to speak to her before the gala.
“If only I had waited to listen, maybe things wouldn’t be this severe,” Jane muttered to herself.
She sniffed and wiped her tears. “But would I have believed her?” She let out a bitter laugh.
“I trusted my family more than anyone.” She looked around.
The streets had grown quieter, only one car passed every few minutes. Ahead was a bus stop with an old bench beneath it. Jane walked there slowly. She had nowhere to go, no friends in Velmoura, no home, no idea where she truly came from.
She sat down heavily, then Greg’s betrayal pierced her heart again. More tears streamed down her face.
Don’t change your last name yet, stay at your parents’ house and come over only on weekends, we can’t have sex yet, I’m not ready, let's stay in separate rooms.
She finally understood why Lila was never at home during weekdays, yet always appeared on weekends.
Weekdays, Lila was with Greg, and on weekends, Jane went to be with Greg. It was more like a shift job. The secret wife and the public side piece.
Everyone at the company knew she and Greg were married. They had attended the wedding. Now that the truth was out, who would believe she was the victim?
Jane wiped her tears with the back of her hand and threw her head back. A sudden burst of laughter nearby made her sit upright.
“Who could this be, if not my wonderful adopted sister?” Jane froze.
Lila stepped into the light, and behind her stood about seven men. They laughed as they stared at Jane with hungry eyes, like predators who had found prey.
“Your fall is the talk of the town now,” Lila said with a smirk. “Did you think you could steal everything that belongs to me, the true heiress of the Vale family, and get away with it?”
“Lila, I never knew Greg was your man,” Jane said weakly. “I thought the board judged fairly and gave me the position. I had no idea you believed it should be yours.”
Lila’s face darkened. “It’s too late now, Jane. You enjoyed your time at the top and looked down on me.” She gestured toward the men. “Now enjoy this moment too. These boys will keep you company tonight.”
Jane was too stunned to say a word. Lila turned and walked past them, then looked back with a laugh.
“Have a nice time with her, boys.” The sound of her heels echoed in the silent night before she disappeared into the dark.
Jane remained frozen until the men began walking toward her.
“Please…” she whispered, moving back. “I’ll give you whatever you want. Just don’t touch me. Please.”
Their leader smirked and licked his lips. “No prize is more expensive than having you tonight. This will be one of our most memorable nights.”
Jane reached the end of the bench. “Please…” she begged again, tears blurring her sight.
She tried to run, but the men were faster, they formed a circle around her. One grabbed her shoulder, and Jane screamed. Another reached for her chest, she struggled wildly and bit his hand.
He roared and slapped her hard across the face. For a few seconds, she couldn’t see anything. She had not eaten all day, and no strength was left inside her.
Seven men? There was no way she would escape. Jane’s body weakened at the thought. Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
Another man grabbed the hem of her dress and began lifting it when, suddenly, bright headlights flooded the area.
Everyone staggered back, shielding their eyes. A sleek black car had driven so close that the tyres nearly touched the curb.
The men stopped immediately, cursing at the driver.
“Who the hell is this son of a bitch?” the leader shouted.
The car door opened. A tall figure stepped out. He said nothing, he didn’t need to, danger moved with him.
The man walked toward them with calm, calculated steps. The leader charged toward the man first.
He barely got close before the stranger struck him down, and the others rushed together. What followed happened too fast for Jane to process.
Fists, cries, bodies crashing to the ground with men wiggling on the ground holding different parts of their bodies. The stranger fought like someone used to fighting bad guys.
Their leader was left bruised and bleeding. When the remaining men finally found their feet, they ran for dear life. Everywhere became silent.
The stranger walked to Jane, he removed his coat and wrapped it gently over her trembling body, then he lifted her with one arm as though she weighed nothing.
With the other hand, he picked up her documents from the bench and carried her to his car, opened the door, and placed her carefully inside.
Then he walked around and slid into the driver’s seat. Jane still had tears on her face, blurring her vision. Without a word, the man reached into his pocket, took out a handkerchief, and gently wiped the tears from her face.
Her vision cleared, and she looked at him. Shock hit her instantly.
“Dravyn Woods?” Jane called softly, her voice trembling with surprise.
"I must commend you, Jane, this is very beautiful," Governor Nathan praised. They had been walking around the company since they entered. Dravyn and Jane followed him from behind, while Betty was at their back. Han was outside, inspecting the area."Thank you, Governor. I wouldn't have been able to pull this off without my fiancé, Dravyn." Jane smiled, looking into Dravyn's face.Dravyn kissed her forehead, their hands clasped tightly. "It's an honour," he said softly."The love between you two is very visible," Nathan complimented. "You both look perfect, but not as perfect as my wife and me," he chuckled."Guess we will be when we finally get married," Dravyn gave a sly smile, and Nathan looked at him with playful scorn.Nathan wiggled his index finger in Dravyn's face. "I won't allow you to beat me in marriage. Never," he emphasised jokingly. They all laughed as Nathan's face turned serious."Let the best man win, Nathan Smith," Dravyn chuckled, and Nathan eyed him.Betty whispered
"Ravne Beauty set to hold its opening today with one scent," Jane read the trending headline out loud from her phone. She smiled softly, and Dravyn squeezed her hand. She had no idea he had been watching her. As she looked his way, he smiled back at her, his face showing fine lines around his eyes."Everything will be fine, okay?" He nodded and continued, "Just stay calm. I won't leave your side." He blinked slowly, staring deeply into her eyes."Thank you," Jane muttered. They had been inside the car since they arrived at the company. The last two weeks had been a hectic one for Dravyn's household. While Jane and Betty spent most of their time at the company, Dravyn and Han were always at their own office, and when they were done, they would go pick up Jane and Betty. Meanwhile, the maids were always in the kitchen cooking and sending meals over to Ravne Beauty for Jane, Betty, and all the workers.Jane shed a tear but quickly wiped it away. "I couldn't have come this far without you
"Thank you, Lila, for helping Vale Corp bring our stock back up to eighty per cent," one board member said happily, praising Lila. The Vales and the board members of Vale Corp were in a meeting. Lila had been able to calm the whole situation down, and even Mr. Howard had stepped back."Thank you," she said with a smile, grinning from ear to ear from her seat."Leo Vale, where is the data we asked you to collate?" the eldest member of the board requested.Leo, who was sitting opposite Lila and to the right of his father, stood up and passed the papers to each of the board members. There was silence in the room until one board member broke it."This is good." He nodded and then lifted his head. "Henry, your kids are really improving," he complimented. The other board members acknowledged the changes. Lila stared at Leo, who was staring right back at her, and they winked, hiding the shared smiles on their faces.FLASHBACK"Lila, what am I going to do?" Leo panicked, pacing up and down in
Dravyn didn't care about the shock on their faces when he announced he would be eating with Jane. They were still staring at him when he walked over to Han and grabbed the bag with the biggest flask. He brought out the flask, placed it gently on the table, and then started setting everything up."Jane, let's eat," he said again, lifting his head from the table.Jane walked over slowly, her face carrying a look of amusement that made Dravyn chuckle. She sat down, and he handed her a spoon. He heard a rustle behind him and knew it would be Han and Betty scurrying to get their own food. Within moments, the sweet smell of chicken curry sauce with rice filled the reception area of Jane's company."I am sorry, but this was the fastest meal the maids could prepare," Dravyn apologised to Jane."I love it. Thank you." She smiled widely at him and then dipped her spoon into the food.Dravyn followed suit, and after a few minutes, he took his phone out of his pocket. He dropped his spoon, typed
"Mr. Woods, the issues we had with Wood Corp the last time have been rectified, and they are willing to change the contract so we can use the latest model for their project," an executive reported happily.Dravyn was seated at the head of the table. It had been a meeting after meeting all day. The only time he had gotten to rest was when Han called him to give a report on how their journey to find an investor had gone."Good. Governor Nathan's project? How is it going?" Dravyn looked at the executive in charge of that project."We are almost done. Governor Nathan has seen the work so far, and he really loves it.""Bring the report for the week to me; I want to see it," Dravyn requested from his secretary.Since Han was not available, he had to use her. The secretary quickly dashed to a table in the corner of the room, picked up a file, and then returned to hand it to Dravyn.Dravyn slowly flipped through the pages, checking the figures and details. "Who compiled the report?" he threw
Jane and the others soon left the restaurant when they were done and headed to the first supplier. Jane knew all the major suppliers; she had worked with them before, but now, her fear was whether they would want anything to do with her. They arrived at the first supplier's warehouse, and he politely refused to supply Jane."I am only being polite because we did business in the past and never had any issues," he told Jane. They left the premises, but this time, Jane wasn't feeling disappointed at all. Her confidence was back, her head held high, and her back straightened. After the incident at the restaurant, Betty's words had given her courage.'I must prove I am innocent, even if it means fighting the industry,' she thought with determination in her heart. The next few suppliers they met were exactly the same. They all refused to supply her with any goods."I will pay more if that will cover the stress," Jane negotiated."It's not about the money, Miss Jane. We have been warned not
Jane sat on the chair beside Dravyn's bed, staring at the bandage. The doctor had not wrapped it around his neck; rather, he had wrapped the bandage around his arm like a sleeve of cloth. With that style, he would be able to put on clothes without any difficulty. Her eyes darted toward Dravyn's fac
Jane, from the side of her eye, noticed Dravyn was counting his steps. His hands were barely moving beside him. She was ahead of him but stopped. When he got to her, she asked, "Dravyn, is everything okay?"Dravyn’s eyes moved around too quickly within a second. He wasn't expecting the question."Y
After the old maid grabbed Old Woods and began taking him to a chair a bit far from where Dravyn stood, Tristan rushed over to them."Oh, Grandpa, you shouldn't be doing such strenuous activities at your age. It is very harmful to your health." He assisted the maid in helping Old Woods sit down.Th
"Sir, the old man's temperature has gone up again. It's the second time today," Old Woods' personal maid had told Dravyn over the phone.Dravyn left everything he was doing at the company and rushed over to the ancestral house."Welcome back, sir," one of the maids said."Is the doctor here yet?"
