Chapter 4

Author: Forest
“Don, is this pin yours?”

He held out a brooch, a rose carved in gold with a ruby at its heart, and put it in Vito’s hand.

It was the anniversary gift I had given him back when he first became Don.

He recognized it. “It’s mine.”

The man said he had found it at the hospital entrance. Vito thanked him flatly. The window went up and the car pulled away.

On the drive, Vito’s mind was clearly somewhere else.

When Vivian asked about the brooch, he said nothing.

I sat on the other side of the car by the window, glancing over at him now and then, and in a daze I remembered the year we had loved each other most.

That brooch had cost a fortune. I bought it with money I earned myself.

I had studied dance since I was a child, and to save up I signed on with a company for performances.

Two shows a day, three solid months of dancing without a single break, and then I could finally afford it!

That night there was a grand Family dinner. Everyone was celebrating Vito taking over from the old Don.

Nervous, I saved the gift for a moment when we were alone, and told him to close his eyes.

He closed them without arguing. “What surprise have you got for me this time?”

I took the gift out and laid it gently in his palm.

He started to open his eyes and I said quickly, “Not yet.”

He laughed quietly. “Okay.”

I opened the box for him so the brooch would be the first thing he saw.

Those three months of work had all been for that one moment when he saw it.

I told him, “You can look now.”

Surprise flashed in his eyes when he saw it. As the new Don, he happened to need exactly that kind of pin to symbolize his position.

Once the surprise passed, he smiled at me. “Put it on for me, Mrs. Gambino.”

It was the first time he had ever called me that.

I held down the joy rising in me and pinned it on with shaking hands.

Under his burning gaze, I fled to the bedroom.

I lay on the bed imagining him wearing it every day while he ran the Family’s business.

A little later he came into the bedroom, pulled back the covers and gathered me into his arms. “I was about to ask you how it looked on me and you ran off.”

I caught the faint scent of his cologne and said, a little shy, “It looks good, obviously. I spent forever picking it out.”

Vito said, “I have a gift for Mrs. Gambino too.”

He scooped me up and carried me to the dressing room.

His gift was an evening gown he had commissioned a couture designer to make for me.

“You love to dance, don’t you? From now on you’ll wear this and dance with me at the parties.”

I blushed and agreed on the spot. He insisted we dance right then.

So I changed into the gown, and under the night sky and the lights we danced until neither of us wanted to stop.

When I came back to myself, we had already reached the estate.

The old Don sat in his wheelchair, watching us get out of the car.

He said a few kind words to Vivian, then turned to Vito. “Antonia’s father called me a little while ago. He said he isn’t well, and that he hasn’t seen his daughter in days.

“Do you know where Antonia is?”

Vito was always respectful with his father. “Antonia and I had a fight. She’s sulking. I haven’t seen her in days either.

“I messaged her to come to the hospital so I could take her for her checkup. She never answered.”

Vito showed him the message history. The old Don frowned. “Antonia has always been a sensible girl. You must have hurt her, or she wouldn’t have left.

“Go find her. Her parents and I all have a bad feeling about this.”

Vito still hesitated. “Father...”

The old Don pressed him. “Go. I won’t rest until I see her.”

It was deep in the night before my mother and the others left. Vito went back to being swift and decisive, and set about arranging my funeral. In private, though, he was a different man. He kept asking everyone the same questions: How do you talk to a soul?Do souls come home?Do souls carry their wounds?Nobody could give him an answer. In the end he decided against having the doctors close my wound. Before I was buried, he finally made his move against the Colombo Family. He stripped them of their power, supplanted them completely, and sent a hitman to kill Vivian in revenge for me.On the day of the burial, Vito put the ring on my finger. My family and friends all came to see me off one last time. With them as witnesses, he held a brief wedding ceremony with me, and announced publicly that he would never take a wife. After the burial, Vito waited quietly until everyone had gone, and then he sat down in front of my grave. It was raining and he had no umbrella. He looked at my photogr

Vito knelt in the corridor and told my parents and the old Don everything while they sat in the chairs. My mother was angry and frantic at once. “Then why are you only saying this now?”Vito lowered his head and repeated, “Teresa, will you let me marry Antonia?”My mother looked at him for a long time. The old Don spoke up. “You’ve already hurt Antonia. If you marry her, you can never love anyone else.”My mother shook her head. “What is there to make up for now?“Antonia is gone. Let her leave quietly. Stop disturbing her rest.“If you had gone to her in time when she called you for help, maybe she...”I knew that from the moment the bullet struck, there was no chance I would survive. If he had arrived sooner, he would only have taken me home sooner. There was nothing he could have done about my death.Saying it out loud would only make him feel guiltier, would only make him blame himself harder for failing to protect me.But I knew Vito would pull himself together soon enough. He was

I remembered that night clearly.I was in a wedding dress with a bouquet in my hands, waiting for him with my friends around me.What came instead were his men. They were full of apologies. “We’re sorry, Miss Antonia. The Don isn’t coming.”I held back the tears and asked them quietly, “Is he too busy?”They offered to take the ring back to Vito. I hesitated, then handed over the wedding band I’d bought to propose with. They promised it would reach him, and they flew back that same night.I sank to the floor with no strength left in me. It took days, and all my friends’ comfort, before I could pull myself out of it.Vito messaged me the moment he heard. He apologized and said he had ordered me a bouquet of pink roses.Crying, I messaged him back: [Pink roses are a declaration of love. So when are you going to propose to me?]It took him half a day to reply: [When I’ve got a solid footing in the Family, okay?][A lot of people still don’t accept me. I want to marry you with nothing hang

The hope on Vito’s face went stiff. He turned toward the closed doors of the emergency room. His color drained away.A few seconds later, he took a deep breath to steady himself and said to the doctor, one word at a time, “You’re lying to me. You’re in on this with her, aren’t you? She’s pulled this joke on me before.“She just passed out from blood loss. Right?“You’re a doctor. How can you lie to a patient’s family? Let me go in and see her.”He tried to force his way in. The doctor blocked him and pleaded with him. “Don, please, take care of yourself!“Miss Antonia wouldn’t want to look down from up there and see you suffering.”Vito couldn’t accept it. He shoved past the doctor and went in. I was worried, but I followed him in anyway. He pulled back the white sheet and stood staring at the familiar face on the bed for a long time. Then he said, in a soft, shaking voice, “Antonia... I’ve come to see you.”His hand moved gently over my face. His voice was raw. “I’m sorry. I was two h

The staff had already wheeled my body into the emergency room. Vito waited outside in silence and lit a cigarette with restless hands. He still had my phone in his grip. My ringtone snapped him out of it and he answered. “Who is this? What do you want?”The caller paused. “Hello. I’m a friend of Antonia’s.“I’m an audio technician. A while back she brought me a voice recorder and asked whether part of the conversation on it had been altered.“I confirmed it had been edited and recovered the missing section. Miss Vivian had indeed said humiliating things to her.“Sir, I’ve sent over the restored audio. Could you pass it on to Miss Antonia?”Vito listened, stunned, then asked again, “You’re saying Vivian humiliated Antonia, and Antonia only fought back because she couldn’t take it?”My friend said, “Yes. I’ve known Antonia three years. She is gentle by nature. Unless you wound her pride, she lets even the biggest disagreements go.“When she gave me the recorder, she looked so hurt. She s

It was quiet under the bridge. Rain still clung to the ends of Vito’s hair.He saw me lying on the ground as if asleep, and ignoring the look on Luca’s face, he said coldly, “Antonia, could you at least have some dignity?“You could sleep anywhere. You had to pick a spot under a bridge and make yourself look like a homeless stray cat.”Soot heard the commotion and came running. He meowed twice at Vito.Vito didn’t even look at him. When I stayed silent, he sneered. “You always did love playing with filthy animals. I told you they’re dirty. You never listened to a word of it.”Luca spoke carefully. “D-Don, Miss Antonia, she...”Vito cut him off. “Shut up! I’m talking to her. Who asked you?”I looked exactly the way I had in life.Vito crossed the last few steps and crouched in front of me. “Antonia, I came to get you. You made your point. Now be good and come home with me.”When I didn’t react, his patience broke. He grabbed my arm and hauled me up.But my body swayed like something tha
