Chapter 2

Author: Zane Lee
"Sonia, come on, for the sake of our friendship, just look after Colin for a bit. I know I was wrong, but Wayne and I have been together for so long. He just wants a wedding."

"Janice, once Colin regains his memory, he'll break up with you."

Janice snapped over the line, "No way! Everyone knows Colin only loves me! The wedding with Wayne is just for show. Colin will understand! I love him too, and I will marry him."

Sonia snorted derisively and hung up.

I gripped the door handle tightly as a dull pain radiated through my chest, making my eyes sting.

I couldn't believe it. The woman I'd loved with all my heart had been playing with my feelings like they meant nothing. All those vows she'd made, swearing that she only loved me, were lies.

Sonia's voice came from the study again. "I've sent you the recording. Find out how the car accident happened. I want answers by this afternoon."

I froze, still trying to process what I'd just heard, when the study door swung open.

Sonia looked as calm as ever. She took my hand and asked gently, "Can't sleep? Perfect timing. The food I ordered for you just arrived. Want some?"

She led me to the couch and slowly opened the takeout boxes.

The familiar, subtle aroma reached me, and only then did I notice the food in front of me. It was my favorite comfort food. I hadn't had it in ages.

Unlike me, Janice preferred heavy, bold flavors. No matter whether we ate at home or dined out, she never chose light, simple dishes.

Sonia noticed that I hadn't touched my food and turned toward me. "What's wrong? I thought this was your favorite restaurant."

"You remember?"

We'd known each other for years, but our relationship had always been tense. Even Janice didn't know my preferences, so how could Sonia?

Sonia smirked, sounding strangely proud. "Of course I remember. I can even make many of your favorite dishes. I just didn't have time today. But next time, I'll cook for you."

I ate a few bites in silence. I couldn't deny that, despite everything, my mood improved momentarily, and I almost felt soothed.

After the meal, Sonia insisted on taking me back to the bedroom.

She leaned against me and held my hand. "Go to sleep soon. The more you rest, the faster you'll recover."

As her breathing grew slow and steady, I gently slipped free and tiptoed into the study.

The computer screen was otherwise empty, except for a single chat window. Just then, the other person sent a document.

The thought of Sonia's request to investigate the car accident made my heart skip a beat.

I opened the file. More than a dozen photos of Janice and Wayne stared back at me. Spanning their early years to adulthood, seven years of their secret lives were laid bare before me.

My breath hitched, but I clenched my jaw and continued scrolling. At that moment, the truth behind the car accident dawned on me.

Janice and Wayne had bribed the driver to wait along the path I usually took. They'd just wanted to hurt me enough to land me in the hospital.

Then, while I was bedridden, they could quietly hold their wedding. By pretending to have lost my memory, I'd unknowingly played right into their hands.

A soft fragrance drifted from behind me.

"You saw everything?"

My back stiffened instantly. I turned my head slowly, and there Sonia was, watching me knowingly.

"You knew that I didn't actually lose my memory?" I asked.

Sonia let out a chuckle. "I only suspected as much. So you were really pretending. Now that you know everything, what are you going to do?"

Her gaze grew sharper, piercing right through me as if she could read my thoughts.

I stayed silent for a moment, then asked, "Are you into me?"

This time, Sonia froze.

As I stared at her, her cheeks flushed crimson, and her eyes darted away. Finally, she couldn't hold herself back.

"So what if I am? You were blind to treat Janice like she was a treasure! I warned you she's not trustworthy, but you didn't believe me. You even accused me of having ulterior motives!"

The composed, elegant Sonia from before was gone. She looked like an embarrassed, angry little girl.

I suddenly remembered that Janice, Sonia, and I had all met around the same time, but I'd fallen hopelessly for Janice.

I kept searching, whispering whatever I could into the phone to keep Janice from spiraling completely. After nearly half an hour, I finally spotted her. Then, my eyes swept farther, and there she was—Sonia, thrashing helplessly as the tide crept higher, threatening to drag her under.Waves of terror and hope crashed into me all at once. I snapped my gaze over to Wayne, my voice low and hard. "If you don't want Janice to rot in prison for the rest of her life, then stop her!"The last of his drunken haze had burned away. He saw how dire the situation was and nodded repeatedly.Janice spotted us from a distance, and regret flashed briefly across her face. "How did you get here so fast?"Neither of us answered. Wayne lunged at her while I dove straight into the water. The waves slammed against me, but I forced my way through until I reached Sonia. Her cheeks were streaked with tears. She was tied tightly to a reef, rendering her unable to move.I tore at the ropes as fast as I coul

Wayne's eyes, glassy from the alcohol, locked on me without wavering. After a long silence, he let out a laugh. The next moment, his fist smashed into my face. The blow knocked the wind out of me, and before I had time to think, I found my own fist swinging at him.Wayne lunged again, grabbing me by the collar. "Who told you to show up at that wedding? Do you have any idea? Jan had already decided that after the ceremony, she'd make our marriage official!"If it weren't for you… If it weren't for you…"His breath came ragged, fury pouring off him in waves. "If it weren't for you, I'd already be Jan's husband! Colin Slater! Why didn't you die in that crash? God, I hate that you survived!"I met his glare and, to my own surprise, laughed. "Wayne, you've been suffering all these years, haven't you? You've had Janice for seven years, yet only I could stand by her side in the open. That's why you hate me. That's why you want me dead. It's the only way you can take my place. "But h

I felt a pang of helplessness.Sonia could only smile wryly. "Let them tag along. Janice will get tired of it eventually."There was no getting rid of them, so we just had to let them be.We headed to the hotel to check in. Once the formalities were complete, the receptionist handed us a key card.Janice stared at it for a long while, then finally gritted her teeth and snapped, "Who allowed you to share a room with her?"I gave her a cool, measured look. "If I don't share a room with my wife, should I share one with you instead?"Wayne strolled over, patted my shoulder, and started his usual buddy act. "How about this, Colin? You share a room with me. That way, they can have a proper heart-to-heart."I looked at him and smirked. "No. You must really love Janice enough to do anything, Wayne. But I'm not like you. We're in a foreign country, and Sonia's timid. I can't leave her in anyone else's care."As soon as the words left my mouth, Janice's tears started falling, fast and un

Janice's eyes stayed locked on mine, unblinking, as she snapped at Wayne, "I don't like Joravia. Why can't I go to Malvora?"Her stare made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end.I tugged Sonia gently and said in a low, firm voice, "Go wherever you want. Just don't bother us. Sonia, let's get going."Sonia's smile widened, and she waved at them. "Bye! My husband and I are heading off first!"I caught every bit of the mischievousness in her voice.Once we were on the plane, I felt exasperated. "Why do you even bother with Janice and Wayne? Just seeing them annoys me."Sonia rested her head on my shoulder and pouted, muttering, "I couldn't just watch her treat you like that, so I wanted to get back at her a little. Still, it's weird running into them in an airport this big."Hearing that, I pulled out my phone.Back when I'd been head over heels for Janice, she'd been super clingy. To make her feel safe, I'd let her install a tracking app on my phone.I didn't really hav

Janice came barreling toward us, looking practically unhinged. "You're not leaving!"She shot Sonia a venomous glare. "Sonia, do you even remember we're supposed to be friends? I trusted you to watch Colin, and look what you did! He's my boyfriend! How could you marry him?"Don't you have any shame?"I gripped Sonia's hand, my voice low but firm. "Janice, what makes you think you can confront Sonia like this? Your newlywed husband is right behind you. Have you even thought about how he feels?"Wayne's face twisted with jealousy and anger. He grabbed for Janice's hand, saying, "Jan, he's lost his memory. He doesn't know any of this. Stop making a scene. Let's sort it out at home."Janice wrenched her hand free, her voice sharp and cutting. "That's exactly why I can't just let someone deceive him! And even though Colin lost his memory, have you lost yours too? Say something!"Wayne's face darkened even further. He clutched her hand, refusing to let go.As they struggled, I took So

Janice's face went ghostly pale. After a long pause, she forced a small smile and tried to act casual."I get that you're upset about Sonia dumping you. But seriously, you don't have to crash the wedding. Come down before you make things awkward for Sonia and her groom."The host looked completely overwhelmed. He glanced at me, then at Janice, Sonia, and Wayne."Sir, maybe you should step down."I scoffed and pulled out the groom's boutonniere, pinning it on my chest. "Step down? Why should I? I'm here to marry my fiancee, Sonia Jarrett."Janice's face darkened even further the moment the words left my mouth. She spun toward Sonia, her tone icy. "Sonia, what's going on here?"Sonia grinned, holding up her dress as she stepped forward. "What do you mean? Isn't this a wedding? Colin and I have been together for five years, and we decided to get married today. I told you already, remember?"Janice's face twisted with anger, and she gritted her teeth. "You knew he was my boyfriend!
