Chapter 1

“Doctor, my father-in-law is running out of time. He needs the surgery now! Didn’t you tell us you found him a compatible heart? What do you mean you don’t have it?”

Helen Black, my mother-in-law, and I were standing at the door of the doctor’s office. We were begging for the update of a matching heart for Peter Black, my father-in-law.

The doctor looked hesitant and conflicted. Then he sighed deeply and scribbled a phone number on a slip of paper before handing it to us.

As Helen and I looked at the familiar number, we exchanged looks with each other. It was the number belonging to Nate Black, my husband.

Helen’s face lit up with relief. “I knew it. I knew we could count on Nate. He must have secured the heart himself to make sure everything went smoothly. It’s okay. Peter can hold on a little longer.”

I hesitated. “But I just tried calling Nate. He didn’t pick up any of my calls.”

Helen smiled and said, “It’s okay. He’s probably just tied up with something. He’s a busy man. I’d better go tell Peter the good news and tell him to wait a little longer. His son is coming to save him!”

As she hurried off to my father-in-law’s room, I could not shake the uneasy feeling in my mind.

Nate was the lead cardiac surgeon at this hospital. If he had reserved the heart in advance, why did he not tell us?

I tried calling Nate again, but he was still not answering.

Inside the ward, Helen was talking to Peter, who was struggling to breathe. My heart was sinking fast when I saw the joyful look on her face.

Clutching my phone tightly, I could not bring myself to step into the room. I leaned against the wall as a helpless feeling washed over me.

Suddenly, the monitor let out a piercing alarm. Peter’s condition had worsened again.

Helen’s smile froze in place. She watched in panic as doctors rushed in to stabilize him.

Frantically, I dialed Nate’s number again. This time, thank goodness, he answered.

Helen stared at the phone.

I quickly spoke into the phone. “Nate, your dad has had a relapse, and he’s in the hospital. You took the matching heart, right? Bring it over now. Dad is running out of time!”

However, another woman’s voice came through the line. It was Camile Walker, Nate’s first love. “Nate is prepping for my dad’s surgery. He’s busy! Andrea, why are you calling him at such a critical time? He’s working! Stop distracting him!”

She hung up.

A horrifying realization began dawning on me.

Helen’s voice was hollow as she said, “What was Camile talking about? Nate was prepping for surgery for her dad? Does that mean the compatible heart…”

Her hands started shaking uncontrollably.

I immediately grabbed her hand. “Mom, this has to be some kind of misunderstanding. I’ll find him and bring the heart back.

“Please calm down! Dad’s going to be okay! Stay here with him. I’ll find Nate!”

I grabbed my car keys and turned to leave.

Before I could go far, Helen called out, “Andrea, I’ll go! Let me go. Nate always listens to me!”

I was not comfortable with her going alone, but she smiled and said, “Andrea, you’re not as experienced behind the wheel as I am. Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing. I’ll bring Nate and Peter’s compatible heart back. Peter is waiting for me. That old man can’t live without me.”

I was still worried and suggested she take a cab instead.

Though she snatched the keys from me and said she needed to be ready and played it by ear.

All I could do was sigh as I watched her walk away.

I did not know it then, but that decision would become the biggest regret of my life.

Nate seemed to turn into a man possessed. He started sending a fresh bouquet to my office every single day.Even the designer bags or jewelry that I had my eyes on but could not bring myself to buy were not spared. He would buy and deliver them to my doorstep.During every holiday and every birthday, gifts would arrive without fail while accompanied by dinner invitations.Evidently, outside of work, Nate did have time and the energy to be nice to someone he cherished. So, that was how he treated someone he loved. I simply was not the target of his attention back then. Though unfortunately, it had come far too late.Nothing was cheaper than affection that showed up only after the damage was done.He kept dodging the divorce paperwork as well. He would often show up at my office or social events and play the part of the devoted husband. My coworkers and friends thought he was a perfect husband.I, on the other hand, was getting sick of him. After yet another rejection, Nate c

Nate and I buried Peter and Helen on a rainy day. Light drizzle soaked through our clothes.Nate whispered, “I’m sorry, and thank you. I’ve spoken to someone at the police station. They won’t be pressing charges.”I looked at him and said, “Let’s get divorced. When can we finalize the paperwork?”Tears welled up in his eyes. He looked at me with a pleading gaze. “Andrea, I was wrong. Terribly wrong! Will you forgive me? Andrea, Mom and Dad are gone. Are you going to leave me too? Andrea, please don’t be so cruel to me!”I looked at the man I had once loved so deeply. Yet at that moment, I felt nothing. I met his gaze with cool detachment. “Nate, you’ve never loved me. Why do you want to keep me with you?”He grabbed my arm tightly. “That’s not true! I do love you, Andrea! I always have! I thought I loved Camile, but now I finally understand. You’re the one I love, what I felt for her was obsession!”I sighed and said, “And what does that change? I don’t love you anymore.”With

As expected, Nate did not show up to finalize the divorce.I did not wait for him. Following Peter’s will, I listed their house for sale.I had just listed the property with an agent when Nate stormed in with Camile by his side.Nate glared at me with rage. “Andrea, who gave you the right to sell this house? This is my parents’ home! Where are they supposed to live? Where did you send them? It’s been days, and I haven’t been able to reach either of them!”Camile looked at me with undisguised contempt. “I told Nate from the start, you’re nothing but a two-faced gold-digger. You’re after his family’s money. And now look, you’re finally showing your true colors.”I gave her an indifferent look and said, “My character is none of your business. We’re still legally married, and you’ve been throwing yourself at someone else’s husband. You sure talk a lot about morals for someone playing the side piece.”Camile’s face flushed bright red. “Nonsense! There’s nothing going on between me and

I crumpled to the floor and buried my face in my hands as sobs wracked my body.Hearing my cries, Nate and Camile came over.Nate rebuked me. “Are you trying to cause another scene now, Andrea? Haven’t you embarrassed yourself enough at the hospital last time? Do you want another trip to the police station?”Camile looked at me with a frown. “Nate, is Andrea unwell?”She tapped a finger to her temple.Nate looked down at me in disgust. “Who knows? This is just embarrassing to look at!”Camile’s mother gave me a long look of contempt. “So this is Nate’s wife? I have to say, I expected better. He’s too good for her.”I stared at them blankly and asked, “Did your brother and sister just have their surgeries?”Camile’s eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Why do you want to know?”I pointed my finger at Nate and let out a hollow laugh. “Wow. Just wow. Nate, you really outdid yourself. Let’s get divorced. Right now!”Nate grabbed Camile’s hand and turned to leave. “I don’t have time for y

I snatched the urns from Nate’s hands. “Don’t touch them! You don’t deserve to! You lost the right to call yourself their son! You don’t deserve to carry their ashes!”Camile stormed over to grab them too. “Andrea, you’re out of control!”She shoved me hard. I hit the floor.Though I clutched the urns tightly, they still slipped from my grasp. As the urns hit the ground, what remained of my in-laws mixed together in a cloud of gray.Camile gasped. “Andrea, what’s wrong with you? You even stuffed those urns with the bones of animals! You’re disgusting!”Nate turned and accidentally stepped on the spilled ashes. The pale fragments cracked beneath his shoe and were crushed into powder.I shoved him away hard. “Get away from them! Both of you, get the hell away!“Nate, weren’t you looking for your parents? Well, here they are! Right under your feet!”My voice broke into such a fierce scream that it made him flinch. He lifted his foot and looked down at the dust beneath his sole. T

My parents divorced when I was in elementary school. After that, I became the unwanted one. After they each remarried and had sons of their own, I became like an orphan no one wanted.Neither of my parents liked me. My grandparents on both sides only doted on their grandsons.I grew up in loneliness. Every holiday, while other families gathered around and celebrated together, I could only watch from the sidelines.I had always been so envious.Because I was always the one everyone forgot about. No matter how well I behaved or how good my grades were, to them, I was always unnecessary baggage.Even after I started college, I was still on my own. I kept to myself, always alone.I never imagined that Nate, the top student and the campus heartthrob, would pursue someone like me.It was just because I handed him an umbrella when he was heartbroken after a breakup. After a persistent courtship, I eventually agreed to date him.We were together for three years before he finally br

The police took me into custody for disturbing public order. At the station, tears streamed down my face as I knelt before the officers. I begged them to let me return to the hospital as my in-laws were waiting for me. The officers looked at one another, unsure of what to do as they listened to my cries. After making several calls, their stern expressions softened with pity. They agreed to let me return to the hospital, but I had to return to the station to face the consequences afterward.I rushed back to the hospital.Helen, who had been unconscious all this time, suddenly opened her eyes. She stared behind me, as if she was searching for someone. After a moment, the light in her eyes gradually faded.I clutched her icy hand and sobbed uncontrollably. “I’m sorry, Mom! I’m so sorry!”She managed a faint smile. Her voice was barely more than a whisper. “Good girl…”Then her hand slipped from mine, but her eyes stayed wide open.I knelt beside her. “Camile, where is Nate?” I grabbed Camile’s sleeve and asked. She yanked her arm free and wrinkled her nose in disgust. “Ugh, you reek of sweat! Stay away from me! You just don’t quit, do you? I told you, Nate’s not available. And even if you managed to track us down, there’s no way I’m letting you drag him away. My dad is having his surgery today. If anything happens to him, you’ll regret it!”“But my parents need Nate too!” I started shouting, “Nate Black, come out! Dad has had a heart attack, and Mom was in a car crash! You have to come with me now!”Before I could say anything more, a nurse rushed over and rebuked me. “This is a hospital. Please lower your voice.” I ignored her. I kept calling Nate’s name and frantically searched the place.Camile tried to grab me, but I shoved her to the floor. As nurses swarmed me, I finally found him.I grabbed Nate’s arm and tried to pull him with me, but he shook me off. “Andrea, I’m prepped for surgery. I stayed at the hospital and paid all the necessary fees, including the cost of the surgery. At first, the doctor was hesitant to even issue the payment slip, but I pleaded with him. “My mother-in-law could bring the compatible heart back anytime. We need to operate right away. I’m just preparing in advance!”After persistent begging, the doctor finally relented and processed the payment.Just as I finished making all the preparations, I was struck with shocking news. I got a call from the traffic police that Helen had been in an accident. When I saw her, I could not hold back my tears. She had collided with a freight truck. A steel rod from the truck had pierced straight through her chest and into her heart. The doctor explained that the rod had impaled her heart. Pulling it out without extreme caution would cause massive blood loss. Nate was the only surgeon in the city skilled enough for such a delicate operation.Even then, no one could guarantee she would survive once the r
