NORA

I turned to walked out of the pack as I said,

“My baby, I'll come back to get you!"

That was the only thought I had when those gates closed behind me and the sound of them shutting echoed through the cold morning air and faded into nothing. I did not have a plan. Neither did I have a direction.

I did not have anything except the clothes on my back and a body that had given birth less than two days ago and had no business being out in this kind of cold.

The snow started coming down not long after I left the border. Slow at first, light flakes that melted the moment they touched my skin, and then heavier, thicker.

My feet were already numb inside my thin shoes and the cold was climbing up my legs and settling into my joints and making every step harder than the one before it.

My abdomen was still throbbing. That deep interior ache that came from being cut open and stitched back together was still very much present and the walking was not helping it.

Every time my foot hit the ground a jolt of pain moved through my lower body and I breathed through it and kept going because stopping meant sitting down in the snow and sitting down in the snow meant not getting back up.

I thought about my baby with every step.

I don't even know his name. I don’t know if Kael had named him already or if Lena had or if they had done it together over his small head while I was lying unconscious in that hospital room.

I don't know what he looked like beyond the brief and blurry impression I had gotten in the chaos of the delivery room. I don't know if he was sleeping well or eating well or if anyone was holding him the way a baby needs to be held.

That not knowing was its own kind of pain that had nothing to do with the cold or the wound in my abdomen or the exhaustion pulling at every part of me.

I wiped the snow from my face and kept walking.

The trees grew denser the further I moved from the pack border. The path I had been following gradually disappeared under the snow and I was moving through open forest now, bare branches above me and thick white ground below and silence everywhere except for the sound of my own breathing and my own footsteps and the occasional crack of a branch somewhere in the dark of the trees.

I don't know whose territory I was moving into.

That thought occurred to me somewhere in the back of my mind but I pushed it aside because the alternative was turning back and turning back was not something I was capable of.

There was nothing behind me anymore. Whatever was ahead of me, no matter how uncertain or how dangerous, was the only direction that existed now.

One moment I was moving through the trees alone and the next something slammed into me from the left with enough force to knock me sideways into the snow. I hit the ground hard on my side and the impact tore through my abdomen like fire and I cried out before I could stop myself.

I rolled and pushed myself up and they were already circling me.

Three of them. Large wolves, grey and brown, their eyes fixed on me with the focused intensity of animals defending something they considered theirs.

Border wolves.

I understood immediately what had happened. I had crossed into their alpha's territory without permission and they had been sent to handle exactly this kind of intrusion.

"I am not a threat," I said, which was almost laughable given the state I was in. "I am just passing through. I have nowhere to go."

They did not respond to words. Neither, did they slow their circling.

The first one came at me and I dropped to one side and felt its teeth graze my arm as it passed.

The second came right behind it and I threw myself backward.I landed in the snow again and the pain in my abdomen exploded so violently that my vision went white at the edges.

I got back up.

I do not know how. My body had nothing left to give and the rational part of my mind was fully aware of that fact.

The thought of dying and not seeing my child pushed me back onto my feet and kept me there.

The same thing that had kept me walking through the snow for hours. The same thing that had made me hold my head up while walking through that crowd at the pack gates.

The same thoughts, that refused to go down quietly even when going down quietly would have been so much easier.

The third wolf circled wide and came from behind and I turned just in time and caught it with enough force to make it stumble and it fell back snarling.

They regrouped and came at me together this time.

I went down.

This time,I could not get back up.

My arms gave out when I tried and my abdomen was screaming and the snow beneath me was warm in the places where the wound had opened back up and I lay there with my cheek pressed against the cold ground and my breathing coming in short ragged pulls and I looked up at the three of them standing over me and I thought about my baby one more time.

I thought about holding him. Just once. Just long enough to let him know that I had wanted him. That none of what happened was because I had not wanted him.

My eyes were closing on their own.

The wolves went still.

Then they stepped back.

All three of them at once, and silence fell over the forest that was completely different from the silence that had been there before. It was Heavier. I could feel it,even through the fog of pain and exhaustion that was pulling me under.

Then a scent reached me before anything else did.It was Warm and deep and layered with something that cut straight through the cold and the pain and the fear and reached into the most hidden part of me and pulled.

I forced my eyes open one last time.

He was standing at the edge of the trees looking down at me with dark eyes that caught what little light existed in that grey morning and held it.

And then the word came. Rising up from somewhere so deep inside me I had not known it was there until this moment.

"Mate."

His lips parted.

"Mate."

And then the darkness took me completely.

NORAI was finally out of that hospital, and I wasn't going back to my old room.I made that decision on my own and I told Raphael directly and he looked at me for a moment and then just nodded like he had already been waiting for me to say it."I'm moving into your chambers," I said,"Okay," he said,Just like that, there was no argument, no long talk about it. It's as if , he already knows. Or maybe he decided the same thing, without me knowing.Damon helped with my things, Wren was absolutely thrilled and didn't even try to hide it, and by evening I was settled into Raphael's chambers like I had always belonged there.I was more than glad to be here. I couldn't believe we actually made it official between us.What makes this more exhilarating is while I was here,he took care of everything. My medications were organized before I even asked, he checked on me more times than was probably necessary, and every time I caught him watching me from across the room he would just look away casu

  • Alpha Raphael's Second Chance Mate    Chapter 50

RAPHAELSleep stopped making sense a long time ago. I’d lie down out of habit, stare at the ceiling, and wait for nothing to happen. Most nights, I ended up back in my study room anyway.Same chair, same silence, same thoughts I didn’t ask for.Nora.That was always where my mind went first. Her mug was still on the shelf near the cabinet. I noticed it every time I looked up. Nobody moved it. I didn’t tell anyone to. It was just there like she was still going to walk in and pick it up.The chair across my desk bothered me the most. She used to sit there like she owned the place. Sometimes arguing, sometimes quiet, sometimes just watching me like she was figuring me out piece by piece.I used to think she was too bold for her own good. Now the room just felt wrong without it.I pushed a file forward, tried to focus. My eyes moved over the same line again and again without taking anything in. After a while I stopped pretending. No point. My attention kept slipping anyway. Back to the ho

NORAMy eyes opened slowly and the first thing I saw was a white ceiling, bright lights, and a hospital smell that I already knew way too well at this point. I blinked once, twice, and my brain was still trying to catch up with where I was and what was happening around me."She's awake,"That was Wren and she was already grabbing my arm before I could even process anything. Her eyes were red and swollen like she had been crying for a really long time, and suddenly there were people everywhere, voices coming from every direction, movement all around the bed. "Nora hey, can you hear me, are you okay,""Don't sit up yet,""Give her space please, give her space,""Nora look at me,""I'm okay," I said, and my voice came out rough and strange, like something that hadn't been used in a long time, "I'm okay, just give me a second,"Daniel pressed my shoulder back down gently when I tried to sit up, "Easy, your body needs time, don't rush it,"I let him push me back and I looked around the

  • Alpha Raphael's Second Chance Mate    Chapter 48

NORAI could hear everything. That was the worst part honestly, I could hear every single thing happening around me but I couldn't do anything about it, I couldn't move, I couldn't open my eyes, I couldn't even make a sound no matter how hard I tried and I tried so many times. It was like being trapped inside my own body with no way out.I heard Celeste crying at some point, that soft broken kind of crying that she was clearly trying to hold back but couldn't, and I heard Marcus's voice too, low and tight, talking to someone I couldn't identify properly.I heard Wren.I heard Daniel giving instructions to someone.I heard all of it and I was right there, I was present, but my body just refused to respond to anything I was trying to tell it to do and that was the most frustrating and terrifying thing I had ever experienced in my entire life. But more than any of that, more than the frustration of being trapped and more than the fear of not knowing what was happening to my body, all I k

RAPHAELKael stood up at that table and cleared his throat like he was about to give some big important speech and honestly the whole room went quiet immediately because everyone could tell something was coming."I called this meeting today because I have a serious legal complaint," he said, looking around at everyone slowly before his eyes landed on me, "Alpha Raphael forcefully took my child from my pack two months ago and I am here to formally sue him under the alpha law."I kept my face completely still and just looked at him."The law is very clear on this matter," he continued, "no alpha is permitted to use his power and his position to wrongly take what belongs to another alpha. What he did was a direct violation and I want justice in front of all of you as witnesses today."One of the older alphas across the table leaned forward and said "That is a serious accusation Kael, do you have proof of this.""I have everything," Kael said, "documents, timelines, witness accounts, all

  • Alpha Raphael's Second Chance Mate    Chapter 46

RAPHAELMe and Marcus and Celeste were all sitting together at the hospital and honestly the whole atmosphere felt really heavy, like nobody even knew what to say anymore after everything that happened with Nora.Celeste looked completely broken, her eyes were red already from crying too much and every few minutes she would wipe her face again like she was trying hard to stop herself from crying more but it just kept happening anyway.Marcus looked bad too even though he was handling it better than her, but you could still see it on his face, the stress, the pain, the guilt, all of it was there clear as day.“She just walked out,” Celeste said again quietly while holding her hands together tightly, “she didn’t even look back at us, she just left,”Marcus sighed beside her and rubbed his forehead slowly.“We knew this would be hard for her,” he said after a moment, “finding out something like this after living your whole life believing something else…”He stopped talking halfway and lo

RAPHAEL I turned to one of my men and asked if they had found out anything about what had gone down with her in that forest. He shook his head slowly. A long breath left me."Get out of my sight. And before you do, dig into everything there is to know about her. I want to know how she ended up in

NORAThe pack ceremony had been going on for hours and I had been standing at the far edge of it the whole time, invisible the way I always was at these things, holding my heavily pregnant stomach and wishing with everything in me that I could just disappear back to my room and lie down and pretend
