Chapter 4

Penulis: Elara Vance
I thought being reborn would let me avoid all the dangers if I just stayed careful enough.

Turns out fate had other plans—I still ended up kidnapped by Dad's rival pack.

When cold steel pressed against my neck, I didn't struggle. Instead, my fingers quietly found my phone's emergency beacon, sending a silent distress call to every Midnight Frost wolf in range.

I closed my eyes as the terror from my past life's kidnapping crashed over me. But this time, my heart remained strangely calm. I already knew how this would play out.

The rogue leader toyed with his silver blade, voice dripping with cruel amusement. "Miss Collins, think your daddy will save you first, or that golden bastard daughter of his?"

I stayed silent, just listening to the sounds outside the abandoned warehouse. My human hearing might be weaker than a wolf's, but I could still catch the distant rumble of approaching motorcycles.

Sure enough, within minutes, the heavy iron doors exploded inward. Two figures burst through in perfect synchronization—Julian and Jasper, their wolves' fury making the air crackle with supernatural energy.

Their eyes immediately locked onto Catherine, who was curled up in the corner, playing the perfect damsel in distress. Her scent was carefully modulated—just enough fear to trigger their protective instincts, not enough to seem weak.

Jasper's voice carried an urgency I'd never heard before. He rushed to Catherine's side in three powerful strides. "Don't be afraid. We're here now."

Julian followed immediately, and they positioned themselves back-to-back around Catherine, forming an impenetrable supernatural barrier. Their combined Alpha presence made even the rogues take a step back.

Through the entire rescue operation, neither of them so much as glanced in my direction.

The rogue leader's laugh was harsh and mocking. "Looks like the Midnight Frost pack really doesn't give a shit about their second daughter."

He suddenly pressed the silver blade to my throat, and I felt my skin burn where it touched. "Move another step and the wolfless bitch dies!"

I saw Jasper's movement pause for just a heartbeat. But instead of looking at me, he turned back to Catherine and whispered, "Keep your eyes closed, sweetheart."

The next second, he grabbed a metal pipe from a nearby rogue and carved a bloody path through our captors, his enhanced strength and speed making him nearly unstoppable. His target was always the exit near Catherine.

Julian was even more direct—he kicked the iron door clean off its hinges with supernatural force, his voice a commanding growl. "Move! Now!"

They swept Catherine between them toward safety. As they passed my position, she lifted her eyelids just enough to meet my gaze. There wasn't a trace of guilt in those blue eyes—only a flash of secret satisfaction.

The silver blade pressed deeper, burning my throat, but I closed my eyes with strange peace settling over me.

So this was their choice. No matter how many times I lived this life, it would never change.

Just then, police sirens wailed outside the warehouse.

The rogues panicked, shoving me aside as they fled toward a hidden passage in the back. Their supernatural speed made them blur in my peripheral vision.

Jasper's group was already escorting Catherine to safety when they passed the passage entrance. For just a moment, Jasper seemed to hesitate. He glanced back toward the warehouse interior, his golden eyes searching.

But Catherine's soft whimper drew his attention back, and they disappeared into the night.

The sirens grew louder. Soon I was alone in the empty warehouse, surrounded by the lingering scents of fear, blood, and supernatural fury.

The Midnight Frost pack, Jasper, Catherine—all these people and obligations that had tangled around me for two lifetimes. It was time to end it all.

While the police secured the crime scene, I slipped through the same passage the rogues had used, emerging in a narrow alley behind the warehouse.

I changed into the plain t-shirt and jeans I'd hidden in my bag, pulled a baseball cap low over my face. In the shadows of the alley sat an unremarkable old sedan, engine running.

The window rolled down to reveal Tom's weathered face—my mother's most trusted driver before her death. He'd returned to his hometown after the funeral, but he was the first person I'd contacted after my rebirth.

Tom's voice was thick with emotion. "Miss Madeline, everything's arranged just like you asked."

As we drove out of the city, I looked back one last time at the Midnight Frost territory sprawling under the twilight sky. The Collins family mansion sat like a fortress among the trees, its windows glowing with warm light that had never been meant for me.

From this moment forward, Madeline Collins was dead.

In her place rose someone with a single purpose: reclaiming everything that had been stolen from my mother.

The wolfless daughter was gone.

What emerged from those shadows was something far more dangerous—a woman with nothing left to lose and two lifetimes of betrayal to repay.

Half a month later, news of Collins Family Group's stock collapse reached the Northern Pack territory.Through my mother's offshore shell companies, I had anonymously leaked portions of my father's embezzlement evidence. The scandals he'd buried for years surged forth like a tide—banks called in loans, partners terminated contracts, and reporters swarmed the Collins estate daily.Kane delivered the latest intelligence. "Collins is pinning all the blame on Catherine, claiming she conspired with outsiders to hollow out the company.""Jasper and Julian have severed ties with the Collins Pack. They're now being hunted by Collins' enemies."I flipped through the documents, pausing at a particular page—proof of ownership for a biotechnology company under my mother's name. In our past life, my father had schemed desperately to gain control of this company, but could never locate the encryption keys for their core research.I closed the file. "It's time Collins learned what it truly means to h

Meanwhile, I was methodically taking control of my mother's legacy within the Northern Pack's territory.Kane guided me through each company's operations, introducing key partners and allies. My days were full and purposeful—I had no time to waste thinking about the Collins Pack and their machinations. That afternoon, I was examining paintings in my mother's private gallery when Kane entered, his expression troubled. "Miss, there's something you should know."I set down the canvas I'd been studying. "What is it?""Jasper and Julian have been searching for you. Their scouts have already reached Northern Pack territory."I paused, then let out a cold laugh. "What could they possibly want with me?"Kane shook his head grimly. "Hard to say, but they're making quite a commotion. They'll likely find this place soon. Should I arrange for you to relocate temporarily?""No need." I turned back to the painting—a winter landscape that reminded me of freedom. "I have nothing to fear from them. If

Both brothers withdrew their arms from Catherine's grasp with deliberate coldness, their movements carrying an unprecedented distance that made her wolf whimper in confusion.Catherine's smile faltered for just a moment before she recovered, her voice taking on that practiced sweetness. "What's wrong? Are you still upset about Madeline? I miss her too, you know."Jasper cut her off, his gaze sharp as winter ice. "Do you really miss her?"Something predatory in his tone made Catherine's pulse spike. She forced tears to well in her eyes, a trick that had never failed her before. "Jasper, why would you ask that? Madeline and I had our little spats, but she's still my sister."Jasper's voice was quiet, but each word rang clear as a bell. "In that warehouse, you watched the rogue's blade press against her throat and didn't even cry out for help.""You even looked back at her once. I saw the satisfaction in your eyes—I wasn't imagining it, was I?"Catherine's face went ashen, her gaze dartin

Outside the Alpha's study in Midnight Frost Packhouse, Jasper pressed his ear to the heavy oak door, listening to the rage echoing from within. The sharp crack of Collins' walking stick against marble punctuated every word. "Incompetent fools! You couldn't even keep track of one weak human! If Madeline is truly dead, what happens to everything her mother left behind?"Catherine's voice carried a perfectly pitched sob. "Father, please don't be angry. We did our best. Maybe Madeline just got scared and ran—she'll probably come crawling back in a few days."Collins' laugh was ice-cold. "Come back? If she's stupid enough to return, I'll make sure she never speaks again."Jasper's claws extended involuntarily, piercing his palms as his fists clenched. The memory of Madeline's eerily calm expression in that warehouse haunted him, along with the too-convenient bookmark left in the alley.Julian appeared from the shadows, his Beta instincts allowing him to move silently through the packhouse.

When the cargo ship docked at Shadowmere Crossing, I'd already changed into a sharp black coat that made me look less like a runaway and more like someone with purpose.Tom's contact was waiting at the pier—a Beta wolf named Marcus whose steady presence immediately put me at ease."Miss Collins, Tom filled me in on your situation," he said, his voice carrying the respectful tone reserved for pack royalty. "I'll be escorting you for the remainder of your journey. Your mother's business interests in the Northern Territories are managed by Elder Kane—he's been waiting for your arrival in Silverpine City."I kept my voice level, burying the storm of emotions beneath a calm surface. "I appreciate your help."On the flight to Silverpine City, I leaned against the window and tried to rest, but my phone buzzed with an encrypted message from Marcus. Attached was a detailed portfolio that made my breath catch.Mother's hidden empire included luxury hotels, art galleries, and significant shares i

The car traveled through the night on empty highways, and by the time dawn painted the horizon pale gold, Tom pulled into a secluded harbor hidden from both human and supernatural surveillance.I stared at the cargo ship's silhouette growing clearer in the morning mist, taking a deep breath of salt air that tasted like freedom.Tom handed me a black briefcase containing new identity documents and enough cash to start over. "Miss Madeline, this ship goes to the Shadowmere Crossing first, then you'll fly to the Northern Territories. Your mother established a trust fund there, and several of her old pack allies are managing business interests. They'll take care of you.""Your mother specifically asked me to keep these arrangements secret. She said if Mr. Collins ever proved unreliable, you'd need an escape route."I traced the briefcase's cold metal clasps, my eyes burning with unshed tears. Mother had never mentioned any of this while she was alive—she'd been planning my safety all along
