Chapter 27: From my nightmare

ARIEL'S POV

I woke up to a knock on my door.

Yawning, I reached for the sheet and quickly covered my nakedness before telling whoever it was to come in. A glance at my phone told me it was past 6 p.m. I’d slept for over three hours, but it was worth it. I’d been too overwhelmed and knocked out right after that cold bath. But now I felt much better.

Ravenna walked in, the usual smile on her face replaced by worry. I lowered my head, shame and guilt washing over me.

"How're you feeling, love?" she asked as she came closer to the bed.

"A lot better," I murmured, swallowing a lump. I braced myself for her to snap at me for putting myself in danger, for stressing everyone. That's exactly what Brianne would’ve done.

But Ravenna didn’t.

"I'm so glad you're okay," she said softly.

She pouted a little, then reached out to touch my cheek. The gesture was brief, but it sent a surprising warmth through my chest.
