Thorne had gone back to his room to return his documents and pick up clothing to spend the night in Ember’s wing. He hoped Darius and his men would reach the Valley before any trafficking faction took advantage of the refugees.

He released a deep breath, realizing he needed to brainstorm better methods of housing them and integrating them into his pack for their own protection and his peace of mind. Soon, he would have to address them as their Alpha, something he hadn’t done since he first started his acts of heroism.

As he stepped into the dimly lit room, his eyes immediately settled on Serene. For the first time since her return, she wasn’t wearing lingerie in his room. He froze, taken aback by her candid manner. Without a word, he walked to the closet to pick out his clothes.

“You don’t have to keep going back and forth between rooms, I’ll leave,” Serene said smoothly.

Thorne paused, turning to look at her but he didn’t respond.

“I’m tired of playing the villain, Thorne. I didn

On the outskirts of Thorne Maddox’s pack, a group of seventeen rogues rested around a dim fire, their tents and few belongings cast in shadows behind them. Ragnar, the leader of the small band, leaned against a fallen tree trunk, his sharp eyes scanning the camp and its people. Their living conditions were far from ideal, but they had managed well despite it all. They had refused to cower before Thorne, and each of them had lost one or more loved ones to his relentless expansion, enslaving those he deemed refugees and rogues. Ragnar hated the fact that Thorne couldn’t accept the idea that some people simply wanted to be free, unbound by any alpha or rigid leadership. His piercing blue eyes flicked over the activities around him, his ears picking up every movement beneath the laughter and murmured conversations. He was always alert and always listening. Suddenly, a twig snapped behind him. He steeled himself, pinpointing the exact direction of the sound without turning his head. Inhal

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 42

Thorne stormed through the mansion, sniffing like a hellhound alongside his guards who were searching for Ember on his command. The entire mansion was on high alert, whispers and questions flitting between staff and pack members about what was happening. He was enraged. What were the odds? That a member of a pack he was feuding with had infiltrated his pack, his house, his heart? It was all so convenient. Serene had told him that Ember was the head of one of the rogue packs formed after Bloodveil fell. They had been causing disturbances and plotting their revenge from the shadows. She was smart, and he didn’t know how, but she had orchestrated their meeting in the woods that day, probably to kill him. But fate had given her a much better option. By mating them, she gained access to far more than his territory. He couldn’t believe he had let her into his house, right under his nose. He had given her access to everything. It was a mistake, but one that could be remedied once he found h

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 43

Ember felt crushed beneath the weight of all the eyes that were on her. Her heavy breathing sounded almost too loud in the silence of the hall. From the corner of her eye, she saw Dorothea watching her, her expression torn between belief and doubt. Ember’s heart clenched at the uncertain look on her face. Even worse, Serene was there too, smiling smugly as she looked down at Ember, who was on her knees between two guards. Ember’s chest burned with hatred for her, but she forced herself to tear her gaze away from Serene and focus on Thorne. “Answer me!” Thorne’s voice boomed angrily, echoing through the hall. “I didn’t mean to keep it from you, Thorne…” “It’s Alpha. Alpha Thorne to you,” he snapped, his voice thick with anger… and something else. Hurt. Ember swallowed hard, her voice tight with unshed tears. “I didn’t mean to keep it from you, Alpha. I swear to you, I had no plans against you. I just wanted to find my mother and brother, that’s all!” Thorne looked at her with disb

If Thorne was angry before, now he was enraged. He placed both hands on his hips and took a deep, rattling breath with his back turned to Ember. “How many of ours?” he asked Darius, who was being helped up by the pack nurse. “It’s just the three of us left,” Darius responded grimly, gesturing to himself and the two wounded guards beside him. People stared and glared at Ember, the whispering taking on a hateful and accusing tone. Thorne rubbed his chin as he slowly turned to face her. His eyes were bloodshot and livid. “Tell me why I shouldn’t end you right here, Ember.” “I don’t know what he’s talking about, please,” Ember said, her voice shaky and pleading. The tears were falling in earnest now, and her heart twisted under the weight of the accusations. Maybe she could have avoided this if she had just come clean to him. But why were Darius and Serene doing this? What had she done to them? “Why would you do this?” Thorne asked, looking at her with disgust. “Innocent people, wom

Darius lunged at Thorne with a vicious snarl, crashing into him with the full force of his weight. Thorne met him headon, swiping his claws across Darius’s face in defense. Darius howled in pain, stumbling back but keeping his eyes locked intently on Thorne. ‘This is what it has come to?’ Thorne snarled in a low tone through the link. ‘Fighting over a woman?’ Darius didn’t answer. He came at Thorne again, feinting a left bite before leaping into the air and landing on him, sinking his teeth into Thorne’s spine. Thorne thrashed violently, trying to shake him off, then he bucked hard, sending Darius flying into the metal door of a cell. Inside, Kaya shrieked and scrambled backward, pressing herself against the far wall. She covered her ears and hugged her knees as fear trembled through her. “Kaya!” Ember screamed when she heard her cries. She yanked desperately at the cell door, but it was locked. Thorne and Darius circled each other, their deep growls echoing off the stone walls. O

Stella sat on her brother’s chosen log, away from the rest of the group. The small fire they used for warmth and cooking cast an orange glow on her stoic face. Her brother, Ragnar, was away on patrol. Anytime he left to hunt or patrol, she felt down and alone. She was friendly with the rest of the group but was closest to her brother and always gravitated toward him and stuck to his side whenever he returned. Ragnar noticed her dependence on him and decided to take steps to push her to be comfortable on her own, or at least to make other friends apart from him. That was why he stopped letting her go on patrols or hunts with him, hoping she would be forced to mingle with the others. But unknown to him, Stella was always perched on that log, waiting for him to return. As she stared off into the night, watching the group, Collin approached her. He quietly sat beside her on the log, glancing at her as he settled. “What are you thinking about?” Collin asked softly, following her line of

Ragnar finally escaped his sister’s clutches and picked up a pair of pants from a drying line before slipping behind a tree to shift back into his human form. Stella waited dutifully for him until he emerged moments later, shirtless and wearing the pants. She hung off his arm and talked his ear off as they walked back toward Collin, who was still sitting on the log. Collin shifted uncomfortably and stood up, pressing his legs together to hide his arousal from his previous time with Stella. He extended his arm to Ragnar, who took it in a firm handshake before pulling him in for a brotherly hug. “Hey, Ragnar, did you spy anything in the woods?” Collin asked. “Nothing at all. It’s all calm out there,” Ragnar said, plopping down on the ground beside him. “Have you heard back from your guy?” “Unfortunately, no. It’s been radio silence ever since the last time we met. I don’t know why he would go ghost like that,” Collin responded thoughtfully. “I just hope he hasn’t been caught,” Ragna

  • Alpha’s thirst for Ember    Chapter 48

Darius limped through the woods, his fur matted with blood and grime. He walked slowly and quietly to avoid drawing the attention of any patrolling guards or wolves that might want a fight as he was too weak for another skirmish. His wolf huffed in frustration, he had been so close, so very close to getting what he wanted most. Thorne’s pack. He flinched at the thought of Serene’s disappointment when he found her. He was supposed to secure their and their baby’s future, but he had failed. Leaning on a tree to catch his breath, he shook his head. No, as long as he was still alive, he hadn’t failed, he would not give up. Too much was at stake. As he began to move again, unsure of where he was headed but determined to get off Thorne’s territory, he heard a sound, hushed voices. He froze to listen. Then, the voice came again. “Darius?” It was Serene. Darius whined and spun in the direction of the voice, limping as he went. Then, from behind a tree, Serene stepped out. As Darius approa

Stella shot upright with a gasp, sweating profusely. She pressed a palm to her hammering heart. Her eyes darting around in confusion, realizing that she wasn’t in the woods or in a tent. This place was warm and glowing with soft candlelight, a high ceiling, and stone walls. Heavy curtains swayed slightly in the breeze.“Hey… hey, it’s okay,” a voice said gently. She turned her head fast.Caden.He was sitting at the edge of the bed, close but not too close, his hands already reaching for hers. She stared at him, blinking like she didn’t believe he was real.“You’re safe,” he said in a calming tone. “You’re safe here. With me.”Stella didn’t relax. Her breathing slowed, but her eyes stayed sharp and her fingers tightened around his.“Where’s my brother?” she asked him immediately, her voice raspy.Caden hesitated for a second, then... “He left,” he said. “With Kaya.”That only made her sit up straighter. “What do you mean left?”“I mean… I haven’t seen Ragnar, Kaya, or Ember since they

Serene stepped out onto the patio in a skimpy dress and a cup of beer in her hand. She took a slow sip, sighing in satisfaction. But when she turned around, she jumped, Raphael was standing there like a ghost. She narrowed her eyes. “You know, you could at least pretend to be useful. Weren’t you supposed to deliver Thorne’s weaknesses to Matteo by now?”Raphael didn’t respond.Serene clicked her tongue. “Don’t tell me you’re still mooning over that girl who belongs to someone else.”That got his attention and his eyes flashed, startled. She laughed, slinking toward him, her hips swaying deliberately. “I knew a man like that once,” she purred, taking another sip of her beer, “Madly in love with someone else’s mate. Thought he could change fate, rewrite the stars. You know where he is now?”Raphael stared at her silently.“In a shitty little inn on the edge of nowhere,” she said with a smirk. “Drinks himself to sleep every night. No pack. No purpose. No mate. Just regret.”She stepped i

Ragnar stood in the middle of the scorched fire pit where Collin’s group used to stay, the ash was cold beneath his boots. The place looked dead and abandoned, with not even the echo of a recent breath. They were gone.Of course they were, Collin wouldn’t have been stupid enough to stay after abducting his mother. Still, a part of him had hoped that maybe the bastard had lingered, that maybe he’d be foolish enough to gloat to his face. Ragnar exhaled through clenched teeth, trying to steady the storm boiling under his skin. He sharpened his senses, sniffing for any scent or trail left behind. Someone had to have slipped and left a sign to point in the direction they headed. Wolves or not, no group ever moved without leaving a trace. The scent was muddled with multiple trails. Like they’d scattered in different directions deliberately. One of the guards Thorne had sent with him stepped closer, disrupting his concentration.“We’ve checked the entire place,” the guard said. “There’s not

Ember stepped into Thorne’s room, her heart pounding, fingers twisting the hem of her short, thin dress. Thorne stood with his back to her, halfway through undressing, his muscles shifting under his skin as he pulled his shirt over his head.Without turning, he asked quietly, “Will you stay?”Ember said nothing. The last time she’d been here, he’d banished her, warning her never to return. Yet here she was, standing in his doorway dressed for him, aching for him. She didn’t want to talk or fight, she just wanted him. Finally, Thorne turned. His searing gaze landed on her, and he froze. His eyes dragged down her body once, then again, slower, like he couldn’t quite believe what he was seeing.“Will you stay?” he asked again, his voice rougher now.Ember stepped forward, closing the distance between them, and wrapped her arms around his bare waist, pressing her body firmly into his. She tilted her head up and whispered, “Touch me first. Talk later.”Thorne inhaled sharply, his hands com

Kaya opened her eyes to find herself stuffed inside some kind of rough bag and slung over a shoulder like cargo. Panic gripped her instantly. She thrashed and tried to scream, but a knot of fabric tied tightly over her mouth choked her sound. Her arms were bound tightly too. Her mind raced, why was she gagged? Where were they taking her?She wriggled harder, desperate, until a gruff voice growled, “Settle down, or I’ll drown you in the river with that sack still on your head.”Frozen by fear, kaya stopped moving. Tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks. The rough jostling continued until, finally, the man carrying her stopped. She could hear voices, several of them, talking over each other, but they went quiet as they approached.“You got her? You really got her?” a voice said, giddy with excitement. Strong arms grabbed her, hauling her off the man’s shoulder and dropping her roughly to the ground. Kaya whimpered at the sharp pain shooting up her side.A moment later, the bag was p

Alpha Thorne, on approaching the border of his territory, smelled smoke and ran faster, bursting through the unmanned gates and straight towards the servants of camp.Ember hopped down from his back just as he and Ragnar skidded to a stop in front of the chaos, several of the living quarters were up in flames, and panicked servants and guards were trying to put them out with buckets of water and sand.‘What the hell happened here?’ Thorne snapped through the mind link to the nearest guard. The guard, breathless and covered in soot, rushed over to him. “Someone torched the buildings, Alpha. No one’s hurt, but it all happened so fast. We were caught off guard.”Ragnar shifted quickly and immediately started calling out, “Gertrude! Mom! Does anyone know Gertrude Fern?” But no one answered him. The only replies were frightened shakes of the head and tearful confusion.Thorne growled under his breath, his eyes scanning the burning mess. His security was too thin and sloppy. Even though th

Raphael sat on the cold floor of the cell beneath Matteo’s mansion with his back against the wall and his eyes half-closed. His body still ached and the wounds on his side were raw and slow to heal thanks to the wolfsbane in the pit. The pain had dulled, but it was still there, throbbing, steady and annoying.“Hey,” the rough-looking man in the next cell said as he leaned against the bars in a cocky voice. “They say you’re the next Alpha of Ashen Pack. Put in a good word for me with Matteo, yeah? I’ll join your pack, follow you anywhere, the works.”Raphael didn’t respond. He barely looked up as he wasn’t in the mood. The man scowled when he got no response. Too good to talk to me, huh?” he muttered. “Actin’ like a prince when you’re locked in a dungeon.” He spat, the glob of spit landing just inches away from Raphael’s boot.Still, Raphael didn’t move. His focus stayed on his side, watching the wound throb slightly with every breath he took.He started to doubt if coming to Alpha Mat

Thorne’s massive black wolf clashed with the white one, their growls shaking the quiet woods as they snapped and scraped at each other. They broke apart, circling each other, both ready to kill. Before either of them could lunge again, a voice yelled out. “Ragnar!” Kaya shouted as she burst into the clearing with panic all over her face.Ember’s heart skipped and her eyes darted to the white wolf... realizing…“Wait…” she murmured, “That’s Ragnar…”She didn’t stop to think and she rushed toward them, throwing her arms out. “Stop! Both of you!”The black wolf that was Thorne skidded to a halt, baring his teeth. The white wolf growled, his chest rising and falling in heavy breaths.“He’s with us,” Ember said quickly, her eyes on Thorne. “Ragnar’s one of us. He’s not the enemy.”Ragnar growled through the mind-link, his voice rough and angry in her head.“He’s always been the enemy. I came here to kill him.”Thorne responded just as coldly.“You can try. “I’m going outside to get some air,” Ember muttered.Caden just nodded, already sinking back onto the edge of the bed, his eyes never leaving Stella’s face.Ember made her way down the stairs as the house buzzed with activity all around her. Hammers tapped, brushes sweeping, voices murmuring all around the house. She passed the workers, each one pausing to bow slightly or nod at her.The hallway no longer looked like abandonment. The cobwebs were gone, the heavy smell of dust had been replaced with clean air and the faint scent of polish. The faded wallpapers had been stripped and replaced with colors that glowed warmly under the light streaming through the lamps. It was becoming a home again. She was the Luna of Thorne Maddox’s pack. That truth echoed in her head with a weight she could finally carry, and she was carrying his child. And despite all his scars and all their disagreements, Thorne had ordered this house to be rebuilt and had stationed guards to protect her, he had exten
