Mag-log inThe girl sank her rotten teeth into Jeremy's neck, barely able to break the skin with them.
He slammed his elbow back, sending her flying across the room. Outside, the rain had stopped, meaning the only thing cutting through the quiet night air was the zombies' snarling. Unfortunately, that meant that any sound we made drew them closer. "We need to kill her. Now." I straightened, stepping on a broken family frame. In it, the four members were smiling at the camera, with no idea this was where their lives would end up. Instead of feeling guilt, I forced myself to feel relief. Because that meant we'd dealt with all the zombies. "And here I was thinking you were a zombie empath," he groaned as the zombie charged at him. She had to have been turned for a long while, because her body had definitely adapted to new abilities. Unfortunately, lack of food had worn it down and degraded it. A zombie snarled outside, banging its head against the wall. I grabbed a cloth from the table, rushing to her. "Hold her in place." He hummed, pulling her arms tight behind her. I wrapped the material in my hand around her head, not only to swallow the sound of her snarls, but also to disorient her. "System," I whispered. "Do they see us, hear us, or smell us?" [They see. To an extent, they can hear and smell you, but not fully. You are carriers of the virus. That corrupts your scent.] "What do we do with her?" My gaze shifted to Jeremy before moving back to the girl. The knife in my hand trailed up her body before settling on her throat. I drew it back and slammed it down with all the force my arms could muster. The body stopped struggling soon after. "We're spending the rest of tonight here. Leave the bodies. Let's just find a room to stay in for now." I turned toward the stairs, dashing up without waiting to see if he was following. It felt uncomfortable to sleep in the beds of a family that had met their final demise at my hands, so I settled on the bean bag sitting on the floor. I'd expected him to go to another room, any room really, to sleep. To my surprise, a heavy body settled next to me after the door slammed shut. He sighed, turning over to face me. "So what's the plan?" "What do you mean?" "Do we just keep doing this? Breaking into houses, falling asleep on cold floors... We need a plan. A purpose." "Go to sleep, Jeremy. We'll head out in the morning and try to find a radio. Who knows, maybe there are more people out there without mush for brains." I let my eyes flutter shut. Minutes later, his breathing evened out, letting me know he was asleep. My eyes snapped open, fixing on him and then trailing around the room. Maya and Jason had stolen my supplies. If they had half a brain cell functioning between the two of them, they'd try to use the radio in their car to get help. If there was any help nearby, it was much better than driving around in a car that could break down any minute. A radio would help us find them. And while I had no intention of telling this stranger that, it was my purpose. Finding Jason and Maya. Not to help them, or forgive them, no. My final purpose would be to be the one to infect them with the very virus they betrayed me to escape. I fell asleep smiling at the thought of sinking my teeth into Jason's neck and transforming us both. The sound of a heavy yawn and water splashing against tiles woke me up. The sun had risen, and from where I slept, it almost matched any normal day I woke up after sleeping on the floor in Maya's room. "Morning, sunshine," Jeremy said a second later, walking out naked as the day he was born. I turned away immediately, my face flushed. "Don't tell me the girl who kills zombies so easily is actually shy right now?" The amusement in his voice was unmistakable. "Quit flattering yourself and get dressed." I pulled myself off the ground, stretching out my stiff body. My gaze carefully avoided his body as I dashed to the bathroom. Still, the image of him naked had completely plastered itself to my mind, an unforgettable memory that somehow shone over everything else. My breathing was erratic as I quickly washed myself, coming out to see Jeremy fully dressed. He gestured at the clothes on the bed that had to have belonged to that girl. "I'm not wearing someone else's clothes. Certainly not hers." "Morality is out the window, Arya." He shrugged. "Your choice. I'm heading downstairs." I pulled the towel tighter around myself and quickly dressed while he was outside. Then I joined him. The clothes were surprisingly comfortable. "So what now?" "Let's head to the supermarket downtown." Jeremy picked up his gun, checking the bullets before shoving it back into its holster. "Right. The radio." He shook his head. "Forget that. It's nine in the morning, and I haven't even had breakfast!" My eyebrows drew in, and a moment later, the joke settled, drawing a much-needed laugh from me. My fingers paused against the door, though, sensing something off. The system chimed moments later in its cold, metallic voice. [Threats outside. Threat level: mostly C-grade zombies.] "We can take a few Cs," Jeremy mumbled. [Numbers: one hundred and sixty-seven.] My gaze shifted up to meet his. "Still think we can take them?"The black rain, in some ways, surpassed the zombies in terms of world-ending catastrophes.I'd know a zombie by the foul smell of their breath alone, but black rain?It looked exactly like regular rain, and it was impossible to tell the difference until it was burning through skin."Shit! It's started. Run!" I hissed as another drop made its way to my neck. The sizzling sound of the radiation burning my skin had me wincing.Jeremy didn't hear me finish before he was dashing forward, just a step ahead of me, as my eyes searched the nearby buildings for somewhere habitable. It couldn't be too large, because that ran the risk of us meeting zombies who'd been infected at work. Or worse, we'd enter an apartment building.Ding! [Shelter detected. Safety level: high. Joe's Convenience Store.]The rain was getting heavier, my breath racing as I reached the surrounding buildings. If the system decided that was the safest bet, I wasn't about to argue with it.Jeremy spotted the place before I d
I kicked the gun out of her grip before she could fire again. Then I planted my fist right in her face, knocking the crazy bitch out effectively. The gun lay discarded on the floor. It was a shame to let it lie there unused, so I placed it in my belt next to my knife, turning to Jeremy. "What the hell does the system..."My voice trailed off. There was a red spot spreading across the blue material of his borrowed cotton shirt. The first bullet had definitely met its mark.It was right over his heart, a fatal wound without immediate medical attention. But Jeremy was still standing, coughing a bit, but fine."How... you're injured. She shot you!"He pulled down his shirt just enough to reveal the bullet wound. The metal piece had lodged itself inside his chest, not so deep that I wouldn't be able to pull it out with my basic knowledge of first aid.Letting that bullet stay in would cause major issues."It's already closing," he said, stunned.I couldn't help but mirror his shock. How wa
Her back pressed against the hood of the car like a cornered animal.[Hostile detected. Threat level: level B]The zombie appeared right behind her, probably having heard all the noise. Before it could attack, I was already next to her, snatching my knife away and sliding across the hood of the car. Before the zombie could snarl, the knife was already buried to the hilt in its neck. The woman screamed behind me, taking uneven steps back until her body went crashing down.Jeremy caught her before she could face-plant, hoisting her back to her feet."Still think we're your enemy?" I asked, smirking. She gulped, her body trembling so hard I was shocked she could remain upright. "What are you?""Clock's ticking, darling. Are you in or are you dead?" I replied, stretching the dagger out so the hilt faced her.She could take it and try to attack, or she could join our little group of freaks while we made our way across the country for my sweet revenge.Telling her what we were would only ca
His body twitched way more than once before finally, slowly, getting off the ground, growling lowly. His wife screamed. It took me a second too long to realise they weren't just screams and were actual words."Emily! Go, go right now!"Her body thrashed, fighting against Jeremy's grip on her.The question of who Emily was didn't fully leave my mouth before the Honda zoomed off, fast. Too fast to be caught, even with our abilities."There were three of them, dammit," Jeremy growled, dumping the woman onto the floor. Her body slumped before she crawled back, eyes wide and fixed on her husband. Or more accurately, his corpse. The man rose to stand, his eyes bloodshot, red streams of blood flowing out of every hole in his head.He lunged for me, and my fingers flexed around my knife, but Jeremy caught him mid-blow, sending the zombie flying to the side.It snarled, standing to its full height again.I heard footsteps behind me, turning just in time to see the woman snatch my blade from my
It took me a moment to understand fully what I was looking at.The woman stared back at me, rifle in hand, aimed at my face. "What the hell are you? Say something before I blow your zombie brains out!"My feet remained frozen in place, my lips pressed shut. It felt like so long ago since I'd seen normal humans that weren't infected.Because of my lack of an answer, she lifted her gun higher, probably to act on her threat, though she never got the chance to.Jeremy snatched the tip of the rifle, yanking it away from her before her finger could press on the trigger. She screeched, darting after the gun until a hand came from the front seat and dragged her back. For a second, a scream almost tore from my throat. Then I opened the door to the driver's seat to reveal a man, middle-aged, about the same age as the woman in the back. They looked nothing alike, so they were probably married."Who the hell are you?" he asked, echoing his wife.He didn't seem armed from what I could tell, and hi
My head tilted back to the car surrounded by zombies. "Could there be people in there?""In this wasteland, where else would the system want us to search?" Jeremy glanced back too.The car slowly came to a halt, and my fingers tightened around the wheel on instinct."Why would we need to recruit anyone anyway?" I asked, groaning. "You think they're also zombie hybrids like us?""Probably. Why else would the system want us to recruit them?""Let's just go back and check. I don't have time for this," I said, switching the gear to reverse."Where are you in such a hurry to get to? Last I heard, the world kind of shut down when it got destroyed."I wasn't ready to explain to him what my intentions were. I certainly wasn't about to tell him my plan to haul my ass all the way to the stronghold in Manhattan where the survivors were said to be.My reason for going there wasn't for the cheap illusion of safety, no.Jason and Maya were heading there. And I couldn't help but feel curious about w
