Chapter 2

Author: Adrian
When I returned to the hotel suite on the island, the living room was littered with king crab shells, champagne bottles, and freshly torn luxury packaging.

Leah perched on the arm of the sofa, feeding peeled crab legs directly to Nolan's mouth. That lavish dinner, along with the limited-edition handbags on the floor, had all been charged to the paycheck that had landed in my account this month.

Seeing me walk in, Leah froze for a second, then quickly flashed a sweet smile. "Ivy, perfect timing. I saved you a piece of crab."

She held out the fishy-smelling crab leg.

I'd just suffered an aspiration-related lung injury, and my stomach lurched. I turned my head away on instinct.

Nolan threw down his game controller. "She spent all that time shelling crab for you and you make that face? Today's livestream disaster was bad enough. Don't come back to the hotel and start more drama."

"Do you have any idea what happened today?" I asked.

Leah jumped up at once, grabbing one of my hands and one of Nolan's, acting like the considerate peacemaker. "Come on, don't fight because of me. Ivy's just shaken up. She's emotional right now."

The moment she finished speaking, a notification chimed from the phone they used for streaming.

Only then did they realize the camera had never been turned off.

Live comments poured up the screen like a waterfall.

Some praised Nolan and Leah for looking like a real couple. Others asked who the pale woman standing by the door was and why she was crashing their date.

A few told me to stop being a buzzkill and leave.

Nolan glanced at the comments, saw which way the audience was leaning, and quickly ended the stream. He didn't explain that I was his girlfriend. He just pointed at the garbage scattered across the floor. "Leah's been filming all day. Her wrists are sore. Clean this up and take the trash out."

Before, I would have quietly reached for a garbage bag, because I always believed love required compromise, and because I was terrified that if I wasn't considerate enough, I'd lose the man whose silhouette reminded me so much of my brother.

But in that moment, I just stood there and looked at him.

"Nolan, I need to ask you something."

His impatience was obvious. "Are you seriously still on about the beach? Ivy, enough. You've got no family here, your job is nothing special. Besides me, where would you even go?"

I looked him in the eye. I didn't confront him about the group chat. Not yet.

A real departure never requires winning an argument first.

The next morning, I spiked a high fever. The hotel doctor advised bed rest, but Nolan yanked the covers off me and insisted I attend the San Diego Ocean Foundation's gala dinner.

"Some major sponsors for the national open-water team will be there tonight," he said. "Leah's got her eye on a gown in the charity raffle, and you going means one more raffle ticket."

My voice was hoarse. "I have a fever."

Nolan sat on the edge of the bed. His tone softened slightly, but the calculation in his eyes didn't. "Don't make everyone think you can't be a team player. You know my shot at the coaching job next year depends on these sponsors' votes."

In the end, he made me go to the gala.

Inside the gleaming yacht club, Leah wore the dress that had been meant for me and looped her arm through Nolan's for every photo. Nolan said my complexion looked terrible and would hurt his public image, so he parked me in a corner near the exit.

Halfway through the evening, Leah deliberately turned away to avoid a reporter and elbowed an eighteenth-century antique marine chronometer off its display stand.

The glass case hit the floor and mechanical parts scattered everywhere.

The foundation director's face turned ashen. "That piece is insured at four hundred thousand dollars. Who knocked it over?"

Leah panicked on the spot and clutched Nolan's sleeve.

Nolan made his decision in seconds. He crossed the room to me, leaned in, and lowered his voice. "Ivy, do me a favor. Say you were dizzy from the fever and bumped into it. Sign a statement accepting responsibility for now. Leah works online. A scandal like this would destroy her career."

I looked at him. "What about my career and my reputation?"

"You're just a project coordinator at an ocean supply company. It's no big deal. Once I get the national team position, I'll cover the damages for you." He even gave my shoulder a gentle squeeze. "You've always been tougher than Leah. We both know you can handle this."

Before I could respond, he was already ushering Leah out through a side door.

They left me alone, burning with fever, facing the foundation's lawyers, insurance investigators, and every suspicious look in the room.

I didn't take the blame for Leah or admit the damage had been deliberate. I simply said I was willing to post a deposit to ensure the restoration wouldn't be delayed during the investigation. At the same time, I asked the foundation to preserve the full surveillance footage and note in writing that liability had not yet been determined.

The old me might have thrown myself under the bus for Nolan.

Now I was only buying time for my final exit.

When I stepped out of the yacht club, a cold rain was falling over the shore.

Nolan texted me: "All taken care of? Leah says thanks. She'll buy you a coffee next time."

I stood in the rain and dialed his number. In the background, Leah was laughing, relieved that no reporter had caught her looking bad in the dress.

I didn't cry. I didn't confront him. I asked only one question.

"Nolan, every time you placed a bet on my pain, did it ever occur to you, even for a second, that it actually hurt me?"

Dead silence on the other end.

I hung up, unpinned his contact, and deleted his number.

Two years later, in early summer, the waters around the Azores were as clear as one vast, rippling sapphire.I wore a white gown designed for freediving, its skirt secured along my legs with lightweight anti-entanglement material. Adrian waited for me in a dark wetsuit, thirty feet below the surface. There was no extravagant guest list, no brand-sponsored livestream, and no one taking bets on our breathing.Just safety divers, family and friends, shifting light, and a school of fish drifting by in the distance.I followed the guide rope down and stopped in front of Adrian. He held out his hand. This time, that hand wasn't there to drag me anywhere against my will or to step back when I cried for help.It simply waited, quietly, for me to decide whether to take it.I smiled and placed my hand in his.We exchanged rings and pressed our foreheads together underwater. A year later, I set a new women's freediving record at the Continental Championship, breaking a mark that had stood for nine years. After the medal ceremony, a reporter asked what had brought me back from such severe deep-water trauma.I didn't talk about Nolan. I didn't paint Adrian as my savior, either."Someone pulled me out of the water, but what truly brought me back was understanding that no relationship has the right to decide how much pain I should endure. Recovery isn't about proving something to the people who hurt you. It's about giving your body and your life back to yourself."The interview was picked up by sports media across multiple countries. The Deep Blue Rescue Base received more charitable funding, and together we launched a water-safety program for trauma survivors. Every course emphasized informed consent, the right to pause, and professional psychological support. No coach was permitted to manufacture so-called breakthroughs through humiliation or coercion.I als

After security escorted Nolan out of the venue, he wandered the city for the rest of the day. That night, he found himself at an unfamiliar beach. The wind was strong, and the black surface of the sea slammed against the rocks. He stood at the water's edge, replaying the livestream on Santa Catalina Island over and over in his mind. That day, I had reached for him from the waves. He had stepped back.He had believed it was just part of the show, that no matter how far he pushed me toward danger, I'd always come back to him."If I go through it too, will she believe I'm really sorry?"Nolan kicked off his shoes and staggered into the sea.The water climbed past his knees, his waist, and his chest. A wave slammed into him head-on, and for the first time he felt the suffocation and helplessness of seawater flooding his nose.He waved his arms wildly, expecting me to charge into the ocean the way I had seven years ago.But I wasn't there.A nearby fishing boat spotted something wrong and r

After the Bahamas Open, I didn't fly back to the States right away.Adrian stayed with me on the training island to prepare for the Continental Championship a month later. During the day, he monitored sea conditions and handled safety protocols. In the evenings, we reviewed training footage together. He never chose my depth for me, and he never looked disappointed when I had an off day. Before every dive, all he asked was, "How deep do you want to go today?"Once, at a hundred feet, I suddenly saw a vision of Daniel sinking into the deep. I nearly forgot to ascend. Adrian, serving as safety diver, reached me in time but didn't yank me up. He used hand signals to tell me to look into his eyes and match his rhythm. After I surfaced, I sat on the dive platform and cried for a long time."I thought I'd already let go of my brother."Adrian draped a towel over my shoulders. "Letting go doesn't mean forgetting. You can carry the memory and keep living. You don't have to keep yourself trapped

The day after Nolan received the suspension order, a headline shot to the top of every social platform."Celebrity Swim Coach Ran a Betting Ring on His Girlfriend's Life"The posts carried no sensational commentary, only the complete evidence file.Three years of group chat logs, payment records, backend voice messages from the streaming platform, video of the deliberately delayed rescue, and a crystal-clear recording of Nolan standing onshore while I struggled in the water, saying, "She's hard to kill. We can squeeze out another spike in views."The materials were submitted simultaneously to the sports federation, the streaming platform, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. My attorney also attached hospital records proving I had suffered a serious aspiration-related lung injury and that the streaming crew had failed to call for emergency help immediately.Public opinion flipped completely.Nolan's follower count collapsed in a single day as his audience of eight mil

Three days later, Nolan realized for the first time that I might not be coming back.He finished an online gaming session and reached for the glass of warm water I always left on the coffee table, only to grab air. He called my name, irritated. Only his own echo answered in the empty apartment.Leah sat on the carpet opening packages and laughed. "Stop yelling. Ivy's still putting on her runaway act. Why don't you swallow your pride and text her something sweet? I actually bet you'd reach out first."Nolan scoffed. "If she thinks I'm apologizing, she can keep dreaming."He made a point of taking Leah to amusement parks, restaurants, and beachside clubs, posting over a dozen public updates, every caption some variation of: Life without dead weight. Even the air feels freer. He expected me to do what I'd always done: see the photos and call him in tears, demanding an explanation.A week passed. He didn't get a single message from me.Late that night, Nolan's stomach condition flared up.
