The photograph burned against her chest like something with a pulse of its own.

Eve didn't reach for it. Not yet. Pulling it out now, in front of him, would hand Valentino something she wasn't ready to give — the sight of her hands shaking, the crack in her voice she couldn't fully control if she looked down at whatever face was printed on that paper. She kept her eyes locked on his instead, jaw set, breathing through the roar building behind her ribs.

"Palermo." Her voice came out steadier than she felt. "An asylum. That's it? That's the whole map you're giving me?"

"That's the door." Valentino released the strap of the duffel bag, stepping back half a pace, though the warmth of him seemed to linger in the space between them regardless. "What's behind it, I can't hand you. Some doors only open for the person who actually walks up and knocks."

"You could have told me this in the cathedral. Weeks ago." Her hands curled into fists at her sides. "Instead you fed me riddles about cages and fractured mirrors while my sister rebuilt an empire out of my own stolen memory. Why now?"

Something flickered behind his eyes — calculation, maybe, or the closest thing to genuine hesitation she'd seen out of him since the night he'd torn her mask off in an alley. "Because now you have something to trade the Board doesn't know you're holding. The master cipher. Sophia's key. Whatever's locked inside that bag on your shoulder is worth more to certain people in Zurich than your father's life ever was to them — which means, for the first time since this whole thing started, you're not the only one with leverage in the room."

"So this is a transaction." Eve's laugh came out short, bitter. "You're not helping me. You're arming me because it's useful to you."

"Everything in this world is a transaction, mia cara. The only question that ever matters is whether both sides walk away with something worth keeping." He crossed to the fire, back to her for the first time since she'd entered the room, and for one unguarded second his shoulders carried a weight that had nothing to do with Valentino's practiced menace. "I am not a kind man. I've never once pretended otherwise, not to you, not to anyone who's had the misfortune of standing on the wrong side of my ledger. But I am not lying to you about this. Your father is real. He is alive. And Alex Vance is the only man on either continent with enough reach to make sure the Board doesn't find him first."

The name landed wrong in her chest — too casual, too certain, the way a man says a name he's spoken a thousand times rather than one he's merely heard in passing.

"You keep talking about him like you know him," she said slowly, something cold and unnamed threading up her spine. "Not like a rival. Like—"

"Like a man who's spent years watching him make the same mistakes I would have made, in his position." Valentino cut in smoothly, too smoothly, turning back to face her with the fire haloing his shoulders in gold. "Alex Vance and I have shared more history than either of us would care to admit at a dinner party. That's a story for a night when your sister isn't bleeding into a holding cell forty miles from here and the Board isn't scrambling every asset it has to find the key currently sitting on your shoulder."

Eve studied him a long moment — the tension in his jaw, the careful distance he'd put between them without quite retreating, the way his eyes tracked her face like a man memorizing something he was afraid of losing. She filed the reaction away rather than chasing it. There would be time to pull that thread later. Tonight, Palermo mattered more.

"If I go to that asylum," she said, "and it's another trap — yours, the Board's, Sophia's, I don't care whose — I will burn whatever's left of your territory to the ground finding my way back out. You understand that."

"I'd expect nothing less." The faintest curve touched his mouth, something that might have been pride if she'd let herself read it that way. "Take your squad this time. Palermo isn't my perimeter to secure for you. I can get you a jet by morning, papers clean enough to clear customs without a flag, and a name inside the facility who still owes a debt from before the Board ever existed in its current form. Past that, you're on your own. I won't insult you by pretending otherwise."

"And Sophia?"

"Stays exactly where you left her." His voice hardened, all warmth briefly gone from it. "The Board wants that woman dead for taking their treasury, and they want the cipher back badly enough to send considerably more than twelve men next time. Keep her buried in that cell until you understand exactly what you're holding. The moment you hand her back to anyone — the Board, Marcus, even your own conscience — you lose every scrap of leverage you currently have."

Eve reached up finally and pulled the photograph free from her vest pocket, turning it over in the firelight. A man's face, weathered and unfamiliar and somehow, impossibly, not — the set of the jaw, the particular tilt of the eyes, echoing something she'd caught glimpses of in mirrors her entire life without ever having language for it.

Her throat tightened. She said nothing.

Valentino watched her without moving, without reaching for her again, giving the moment the kind of space she hadn't expected from a man who'd spent every prior conversation crowding into hers without asking.

"Get some sleep before the jet leaves," he said finally, quiet now, the gravel gone soft at the edges. "Palermo will still be standing in six hours. So will he."

Eve slid the photograph carefully back into her vest, close against her chest, and looked up at him one last time — searching his face for the lie she was certain had to be buried somewhere in all of this, and finding, infuriatingly, nothing she could actually put her finger on.

"Six hours," she said. "Then I'm gone, with or without your jet."

"With it," Valentino said, something almost gentle threading through the words despite himself. "I'd rather you land in Palermo than wherever a stolen commercial flight might actually put you down."

She turned toward the door — the same door that had swung open for her hours earlier, exactly as promised, cold night air still curling faintly beneath it — and didn't look back at him again before she stepped through it into the dark.

Behind her, alone in the firelight, Alex let the last of Valentino's careful stillness drain out of his shoulders, staring at the space where his wife had just stood without knowing his own name.

Palermo, he thought, reaching for the tumbler of scotch he'd never actually touched. One more door. One more piece handed back at exactly the pace she can survive carrying it.

Somewhere north along the state line, in a subterranean cell built into the bones of his own compound, Sophia Voss lay curled on a bare bench in the dark, listening to the storm finally break apart overhead — and began, quietly, patiently, working the frayed edge of a zip-tie against the rough concrete corner of the wall.

The storm outside had subsided into a steady, rhythmic patter against the leaded glass windows, leaving the eastern wing wrapped in a heavy, exhausted calm. Inside the master suite, the fireplace had burned down to a pile of glowing amber embers, throwing faint, warm shadows across the bed.Eve woke up slowly, her body heavy with a deep, systemic ache. But for the first time in months, her mind wasn't instantly screaming in a hyper-vigilant panic. She was warm.A massive, heavy arm was slung loosely over her waist, pinning her securely against a broad, solid chest. She shifted slightly, her breathing catching as she realized Valentino was still awake. He lay propped up against the dark wood headboard, his massive frame motionless. The matte-black ballistic mask was still securely locked in place, a stark, terrifying contrast to the soft linen sheets pooled around his waist. She expected him to tighten his grip, to reassert the suffocating dominance that had broken her walls the night

The underworld of New York didn't gather in abandoned warehouses. It congregated in the subterranean, high-security VIP lounges tucked beneath Manhattan's elite, soundproofed clubs. Tonight, the air inside The Obsidian Room hung thick with cigar smoke, vintage crystal, and the low murmur of international arms dealers trading pleasantries with syndicate bosses who'd never once used their real names in this room. And directly in the center of it, the entire lounge went still the moment Italy's sovereign walked in.Alex kept the matte-black ballistic mask locked firmly in place, its angular carbon-fiber lines catching the dark red neon crawling across the walls. Behind the tinted, one-way visor, his eyes stayed completely invisible, the golden gaze of a Manhattan billionaire buried where no one in this room would ever think to look for it. Beside him, Eve moved with a quiet, lethal grace of her own. A sleek, backless black dress concealed the white tactical gauze still wrapped tight arou

I need to call Ryan," she said, once the room stopped moving. "Tell him status.""Do it." He gestured toward the encrypted phone clipped at her hip, the one he himself had programmed his number into hours ago in a foyer that no longer felt like it belonged to tonight. "I'm not stopping you from talking to your people, Eve. I'm stopping you from getting back in a car in the next six hours. There's a difference, and I'd like you to notice it, because I don't intend to keep pointing it out."She stared at him a long moment — the towering, coiled stillness of him, the brown contacts that couldn't quite kill the gold underneath if you looked long enough, the particular way he held himself like a man perpetually deciding whether violence was necessary and finding, each time, that it wasn't. Not yet.She pulled out the phone.Ryan picked up on the first ring, voice tight with the specific static of a man who'd been sitting on bad instincts for hours. "Viper. Talk to me. Before she could reach the outer gates, Valentino’s deep, commanding voice stopped her.“You’re barely holding on to yourself, and you want to go where?” he asked.“That’s not your concern, and I don’t see why you’re concerned about how I’m holding on,” she retorted. He stared at her for a moment before saying, “I have another piece of information for you. Come with me.”He took her to the east wing. The moment she stepped inside, Valentino shut the door and locked it.Her eyes widened. “Valentino!”She rushed to the door, pounding her fist against it. “Open this door!”He didn’t answer.“Valentino!” she shouted again, hitting the door harder. On the other side, he remained still, listening to the anger and frustration in her voice.“I had to lock you in,” he finally said, his voice low. “You’re barely holding yourself together, and I’m not going to stand there and watch you walk away until you completely fall apart.”She hit the door again.“Let me out!”His jaw tightened. “Hate me

The iron doors had slammed shut behind her with the finality of a verdict, and for one suspended moment, Eve believed every word he'd said. Sealed perimeter. Active countermeasures. You are going to stay here until I decide you are ready. Her hand stayed hovering over her sidearm. She didn't draw it. Not yet."You lured me here," she said again, flatter this time, testing the shape of her own voice against the stone."I gave you a path." Valentino's gloved fingers traced the line of her jaw, unhurried, and she let him, watching his eyes instead of his hand. "You ran down it. That's not the same thing as a trap, mia cara, whatever it looks like from where you're standing.""It looks exactly like a trap from where I'm standing." She didn't step back. Stepping back would have told him something she wasn't willing to hand over for free. "Sealed doors. A threat against my squad if they come for me. Call it whatever you want. I know what a cage sounds like when someone's building one around

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows. Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building. He looked just like the photos, just like Sophia had always described. Tall. Broad shoulders. The scent of his cologne,
