The iron doors had slammed shut behind her with the finality of a verdict, and for one suspended moment, Eve believed every word he'd said. Sealed perimeter. Active countermeasures. You are going to stay here until I decide you are ready.

Her hand stayed hovering over her sidearm. She didn't draw it. Not yet.

"You lured me here," she said again, flatter this time, testing the shape of her own voice against the stone.

"I gave you a path." Valentino's gloved fingers traced the line of her jaw, unhurried, and she let him, watching his eyes instead of his hand. "You ran down it. That's not the same thing as a trap, mia cara, whatever it looks like from where you're standing."

"It looks exactly like a trap from where I'm standing." She didn't step back. Stepping back would have told him something she wasn't willing to hand over for free. "Sealed doors. A threat against my squad if they come for me. Call it whatever you want. I know what a cage sounds like when someone's building one around me."

Something shifted behind the mask-less eyes — not retreat, but a kind of recalibration, like a man realizing the ground under his own certainty had just tilted.

"You think I'd actually keep you." It wasn't quite a question.

"I think you just told me I couldn't leave."

"I told you what would happen if your squad breached my perimeter uninvited." His voice dropped, quieter now, some of the theater draining out of it. "Because they would die, Eve. Every automated system in this compound is built to read an unauthorized incursion as an act of war and respond accordingly. That part wasn't a bluff. I've buried men who tested it." A pause. "You, walking through my front door because I asked you to — that's different. That door isn't locked. It was never going to be."

"Prove it."

He didn't hesitate. He stepped back — a full pace, deliberate, hands lifting slightly away from his sides — and with a single spoken command into the air, the heavy iron doors behind her released their bolt with a low mechanical groan, swinging open onto the wet, dark night beyond.

Cold air rushed into the foyer. Eve didn't move toward it. She stood very still, watching him instead of the open door, some old instinct telling her that the real test had just started, not ended.

"There," Valentino said. "Walk out any time you like. I won't stop you. I never intended to."

"Then why say it at all?" Her jaw stayed tight, fury and something more complicated braided too close together to fully separate. "Why tell me I was locked in if you were always going to let me walk?"

"Because you don't listen when I ask nicely." A faint, humorless smile ghosted across his mouth. "You've spent your whole life running toward exactly the kind of danger that gets people killed — Marcus, the Board, a mountain pass in the middle of a storm with your own sister trying to put a knife in you. I needed you to stand still long enough to hear me. Fear does that faster than a conversation ever has with you." He studied her, something unguarded flickering through the words that followed. "It was cruel. I'm not going to dress it up as anything else. But it wasn't a cage, Eve. I was never going to keep you here against your will. I don't know what kind of man you think I am, but that isn't it."

She held his gaze a long moment, weighing the words the way she weighed everything now — against a decade of half-truths, against every version of Alex and Valentino and whoever else had ever worn a mask in front of her without telling her why.

"You could have just said Sophia's capture put the whole Board on alert," she said finally, low. "You could have told me you were worried they'd retaliate the second they realized the key was gone. That would have gotten me here just as fast."

"Would it?" One dark brow lifted. "You'd have brought your squad. Full tactical breach, guns up, expecting exactly the kind of fight that would have gotten someone killed against a perimeter neither of us wants tested. I needed you here alone. Fear was faster than persuasion. I'm not proud of the method. I'd do it again if it kept you breathing."

The open door sat behind her, night air curling cold around her ankles, an exit that had apparently always been exactly that — an exit, not a lie.

Eve didn't take it. Not yet.

"Say what you actually brought me here to say," she said instead, arms crossing tight over her chest, putting the width of the foyer's silence between them like a wall she intended to keep standing. "You said I'd get the truth when you decided I was ready. I didn't come here to be managed, Valentino. I came here because you dangled my father in front of me weeks ago and never finished the sentence."

Something in his expression sobered fully at that, the last of the theater falling away entirely.

"Sit with me," he said, gesturing toward the study beyond the staircase, voice stripped down to something closer to honest than she'd heard from him since the cathedral. "Bring the bag, if it makes you feel steadier. I'm not taking anything from you tonight, Eve. Least of all your choice to walk back out that door whenever you decide you've heard enough."

She studied him another long moment — the open door at her back, the man in front of her who had just handed her, deliberately, the exact leverage he could have kept for himself — and felt something in her chest loosen by a single, grudging degree.

"Talk fast," she said, finally lowering her hand from her sidearm. "My squad's watching a clock, and so am I."

He inclined his head, something that might have been relief moving briefly behind his eyes before he turned and led her deeper into the house — leaving the iron doors standing open behind them both, exactly as he'd promised, the night air pouring freely through a threshold that had never actually been sealed at all.

The study sat warm and dim, firelight throwing long shadows across walls lined with books and old maps of a country he'd apparently spent a lifetime quietly ruling from its shadows. Valentino poured two glasses of something dark and didn't press one into her hand — set it instead on the table between them, leaving the choice, like everything else tonight, entirely hers.

"Your father," he said, without preamble, "built the original architecture of the Viper program. Not the corrupted version the Board runs now. The version meant to protect people like you, before it was hollowed out and turned into something else entirely."

Eve's fingers tightened around the arm of the chair.

"Where is he."

"Closer than you think. Further than you'd like."

Valentino's gaze held steady on hers, no games left in it now. "I'll take you to him. Not tonight — the Board's mobilizing hard after what happened on that mountain pass, and moving on his location before they've settled would get him killed. But soon. That's not a cage either, Eve. That's a timeline. There's a difference, and I need you to actually believe that, because I have no intention of spending whatever this is between us with you flinching every time I ask you to trust me for an hour longer than you want to."

She looked at him a long moment — the open door still visible down the hall behind him, cold night air still drifting faintly through the house — and found, for the first time since the cathedral, that she believed him.

"One hour," she said. "Then I want the coordinates."

"You'll have them." A faint, real smile, nothing predatory left in it. "I told you. I was never going to keep you."

Outside, the storm that had chased her across an ocean finally began to break apart over the tree line, the first thin edge of clear sky showing through and somewhere in the dark beyond the estate's walls, the door stood open exactly as wide as it had the entire time.

The storm outside had subsided into a steady, rhythmic patter against the leaded glass windows, leaving the eastern wing wrapped in a heavy, exhausted calm. Inside the master suite, the fireplace had burned down to a pile of glowing amber embers, throwing faint, warm shadows across the bed.Eve woke up slowly, her body heavy with a deep, systemic ache. But for the first time in months, her mind wasn't instantly screaming in a hyper-vigilant panic. She was warm.A massive, heavy arm was slung loosely over her waist, pinning her securely against a broad, solid chest. She shifted slightly, her breathing catching as she realized Valentino was still awake. He lay propped up against the dark wood headboard, his massive frame motionless. The matte-black ballistic mask was still securely locked in place, a stark, terrifying contrast to the soft linen sheets pooled around his waist. She expected him to tighten his grip, to reassert the suffocating dominance that had broken her walls the night

The underworld of New York didn't gather in abandoned warehouses. It congregated in the subterranean, high-security VIP lounges tucked beneath Manhattan's elite, soundproofed clubs. Tonight, the air inside The Obsidian Room hung thick with cigar smoke, vintage crystal, and the low murmur of international arms dealers trading pleasantries with syndicate bosses who'd never once used their real names in this room. And directly in the center of it, the entire lounge went still the moment Italy's sovereign walked in.Alex kept the matte-black ballistic mask locked firmly in place, its angular carbon-fiber lines catching the dark red neon crawling across the walls. Behind the tinted, one-way visor, his eyes stayed completely invisible, the golden gaze of a Manhattan billionaire buried where no one in this room would ever think to look for it. Beside him, Eve moved with a quiet, lethal grace of her own. A sleek, backless black dress concealed the white tactical gauze still wrapped tight arou

I need to call Ryan," she said, once the room stopped moving. "Tell him status.""Do it." He gestured toward the encrypted phone clipped at her hip, the one he himself had programmed his number into hours ago in a foyer that no longer felt like it belonged to tonight. "I'm not stopping you from talking to your people, Eve. I'm stopping you from getting back in a car in the next six hours. There's a difference, and I'd like you to notice it, because I don't intend to keep pointing it out."She stared at him a long moment — the towering, coiled stillness of him, the brown contacts that couldn't quite kill the gold underneath if you looked long enough, the particular way he held himself like a man perpetually deciding whether violence was necessary and finding, each time, that it wasn't. Not yet.She pulled out the phone.Ryan picked up on the first ring, voice tight with the specific static of a man who'd been sitting on bad instincts for hours. "Viper. Talk to me. Before she could reach the outer gates, Valentino’s deep, commanding voice stopped her.“You’re barely holding on to yourself, and you want to go where?” he asked.“That’s not your concern, and I don’t see why you’re concerned about how I’m holding on,” she retorted. He stared at her for a moment before saying, “I have another piece of information for you. Come with me.”He took her to the east wing. The moment she stepped inside, Valentino shut the door and locked it.Her eyes widened. “Valentino!”She rushed to the door, pounding her fist against it. “Open this door!”He didn’t answer.“Valentino!” she shouted again, hitting the door harder. On the other side, he remained still, listening to the anger and frustration in her voice.“I had to lock you in,” he finally said, his voice low. “You’re barely holding yourself together, and I’m not going to stand there and watch you walk away until you completely fall apart.”She hit the door again.“Let me out!”His jaw tightened. “Hate me

That's the whole map you're giving me?""That's the door." Valentino released the strap of the duffel bag, stepping back half a pace, though the warmth of him seemed to linger in the space between them regardless. "What's behind it, I can't hand you. Some doors only open for the person who actually walks up and knocks.""You could have told me this in the cathedral. Weeks ago." Her hands curled into fists at her sides. Eve woke tangled in sheets that didn’t belong to her, the unfamiliar softness cocooning her limbs. The morning sun, bold and intrusive, leaked through gauzy curtains, painting the room in gold. Eve struggled to breathe. It wasn’t because Alex was holding her too tight—though he definitely was. Every second in his arms chipped away at the walls she’d spent years building.
