Chapter 3

Author: Jam Brulee
Holding Brooke and that black card, I rushed straight to the hospital.

After completing the admission procedures, I practically threw myself at the payment window and handed over the card. "I'm here to pay for Brooke Sullivan's surgery!"

The nurse checked her computer, and she suddenly appeared troubled. "You're his family, right? I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news… but the donor kidney that was allocated to him has already been reassigned to another patient."

My brain short-circuited.

Clutching the window bars in a vice grip, I fretted, "We've been on the waiting list for three whole years! It was clearly our turn today!"

The nurse looked at me, her eyes filled with sympathy. "Word is, a patient named Sam Graham was in critical condition. The hospital director personally approved the transfer."

Sam Graham was Selene's cousin who spent his days street-racing, brawling, and indulging in every vice imaginable. Yet, he was going to steal the lifesaving opportunity my son had waited three years for just because he had wrecked his kidneys?

The last thread holding my sanity together snapped at that moment. Like a madwoman, I rushed toward the hospital director's office. Yet, as I rounded the corridor, I suddenly stopped in my tracks.

Clifford was in the center of a crowd a short distance away, listening to the attending physician's report. "Rest assured, Mr. Mitchell. Mr. Graham's surgery was a complete success. The donor kidney is highly compatible with him, so the risk of rejection is extremely low."

All the blood in my body ran cold, and a deafening ringing filled my ears.

So, the hospital hadn't changed the list at the last minute. Clifford had personally given the kidney to the Grahams.

I glared at him, hatred blazing through me like fire rising from the depths of my soul. "Give Brooke his kidney back, Clifford Mitchell! That's his lifeline. How dare you give it to Sam?"

Clifford's eyes widened with disbelief. "Because my word is law here, and that little bastard was never meant to live. He should be thanking his lucky stars that kidney could save Selene's cousin."

My whole body trembled. "You'll pay for this, Clifford…"

His gaze turned ice-cold, and he kicked me in the shoulder. "Kyra, your father was a filthy sex offender, and you're a shameless slut. The fact that your whole family has ended up like this is the punishment you deserve!"

He leaned down, driving his words into my heart like knives. "Don't you love money? When that little bastard dies, I'll give you a million dollars. How does that sound?"

Looking into his eyes, I suddenly found it deeply ironic. It dawned on me that a person's heart could rot to such a degree.

Just then, my phone vibrated frantically. I answered with trembling hands. "Ms. Sullivan, you need to get over here right now! Your son has suddenly gone into acute kidney failure. The doctors are trying to save him!"

A month later, Brooke was transferred to a general ward. He recovered better than the doctors had expected. He could slowly sit up on his own and had regained enough strength to speak softly to me. That evening, as he held half a bowl of oatmeal, he suddenly looked up at me. "Mommy, where's that man?"My hand froze in midair. "Who are you referring to?""The man who donated his kidney to me. Is he… my daddy?"My chest tightened. It took me a long while to respond in a low voice, "Yes."Brooke froze for a few seconds before lowering his head and asking softly, "Will he… abandon us again?"I pulled him into a tight embrace, my tears landing on his hospital gown. "No. No one will ever abandon you again, Brooke."…Outside the hospital room, the wheelchair that had been parked there quietly rolled backward. Clifford sat in his wheelchair, an IV needle still taped to the back of his hand, his face as pale as a sheet of paper. He had only wanted to catch a glimpse of his son from

I looked up at Clifford and said, "I'm agreeing to the surgery not because I forgive you but because Brooke deserves to live. If anything goes wrong with this procedure, Clifford, I'll make you pay with your life!" He couldn't make a sound. He could only stare at me long and hard, his eyes so bloodshot it looked as if blood would drip from them at any moment. The surgical consent form was soon brought over. Without the slightest hesitation, Clifford took the pen and signed his name. Before going into surgery, he called both his lawyer and his assistant, Theodore. I sat on the bench without even looking up. Yet, I heard every single word they said with clarity."As of today, I'm transferring all the properties, financial assets, and trust funds in my name to Brooke. Kyra will have full custody of Brooke, and no one is allowed to interfere. Submit all evidence of the Grahams' illegal activities to the police. Have Mason's exoneration materials delivered to the court and the media b

Clifford's grip tightened around his phone until the veins on the back of his hand bulged. He stood at the end of the hospital corridor, listening to Theodore's report, his expression darkening bit by bit. "Is the account not registered under Mason's name?""No. It's registered under his name on the surface, but the account was created with forged documents. The Grahams are the ones who actually control it." Theodore paused before lowering his voice and continuing, "As for that audio recording, we had an expert run a voice analysis—it's definitely been cut and spliced. The hotel footage from back then was edited too. There's also something fishy about Ms. Sullivan's information at the hotel!"Clifford's breath hitched, a deafening roar filling his head. Theodore added, "Mason's case file from back then doesn't add up either. His statements contradict each other, and there are medical records documenting injuries from his time in custody that strongly suggest he was subjected

I sat outside the emergency room, the blood on my shoulder soaking through half of my clothes. Yet, I didn't feel a thing. I simply stared at the red light above the door. After having his blood drawn, Clifford returned with a pallid complexion. There were still traces of blood on his cuff that hadn't been completely wiped away. He stood two steps away from me, looking as though he wanted to approach me, but he didn't dare. "The doctor says we have to wait for the compatibility test results."I paid him no mind. After a few heavy seconds of silence, he took off his coat and tried to drape it over my shoulders. I abruptly raised my hand and knocked it away. "Don't touch me!"His coat fell onto the floor, and he looked down at it for a couple of seconds. His Adam's apple bobbed once before he bent down to pick it up.Silence hung over the corridor for so long that I thought he had finally left. Yet he suddenly broke it. "The evidence back then wasn't fabricated. When my fami

The doors to the emergency room swung open, and a doctor called out frantically, "Who's Brooke Sullivan's immediate family?" My legs almost gave out, and I practically threw myself forward. "I am! I'm his mother!"The doctor glanced at me. "The child's condition has deteriorated again. We need to run an immediate compatibility test on a direct relative. Is his father here? If he is, we need to draw his blood immediately!"As soon as the words rolled off his tongue, I heard that familiar voice behind me. "I'm here."My entire body went rigid. I turned around and met Clifford's bloodshot eyes. He clutched the paternity test report, his face grim. "Kyra, don't you think you owe me an explanation?" "Do I? Didn't you sentence my son and me to death long ago, Mr. Mitchell? What explanation could you possibly need now?"Clifford's breath hitched, and he lunged forward, grabbing my wrist in a vice-like grip. "Since Brooke is my son, why did you keep it from me for five whole years? T

I couldn't remember how many times Brooke had been rushed into the emergency room. At five years old, he hadn't lived a single decent day since the day he was born. Hospital beds, dialysis, needles, and disinfectant made up his entire childhood. When the doctor handed me the critical condition notice, my hands were shaking so badly that I couldn't even hold the pen. "If we can't find a suitable kidney donor soon, I'm afraid the child won't make it through the night."My hands trembled, unable to grasp the pen no matter how hard I tried. "Doctor, please take my blood—take one of my kidneys. As long as you can save him, I'll do anything!"The doctor sighed and shook his head helplessly.I stumbled into the VIP ward and crawled on all fours toward Clifford. Clutching his pant leg, I pleaded, "Clifford, I'm begging you, please find a kidney donor and save Brooke… "I know you despise me. If you save him, I'll give you my life. I'll get down on my knees and beg you. I'll even die if
