Morning came softly. Downstairs, dishes clinked and the scent of toast and coffee hung in the air. Then came laughter, bright, unrestrained, unmistakable.

Charlotte's.

It drifted down the corridor, joined by Nathaniel’s steady, far-too-mature voice.

"Charlotte, that's for breakfast, not for birds."

“But he seemed hungry,” she protested, stepping back.

Sebastian awake, smiled faintly. Alina lay beside him, watching light crawl across the ceiling. For a moment, there was peace.

She sat up slowly. “I’ll freshen up before the twins storm in here.”

Sebastian chuckled softly. "Too late for that."

As Alina slipped into the bathroom, a knock then the door opened. Charlotte held a plate of crumbs, Nathaniel trailing, amused but resigned.

“Daddy, we found a bird!” Charlotte announced. “On the terrace, I gave him breakfast!”

Sebastian crouched down. “Did you?”

“I told her birds don’t eat toast,” Nathaniel said.

Sebastian rested a hand on his son’s shoulder. “Probably true. But maybe this one was

A few days later, the house woke early.Nathaniel was already dressed when Alina opened his door. Shirt tucked, shoes aligned by the bed, backpack waiting. He sat on the edge of the mattress, hands folded, calm, alert.“You didn’t need an alarm,” Alina said softly.“I know,” he replied. “I didn’t want to be late.”She smiled, brushing a hand through his hair. There was something quietly striking in his stillness, intention in every motion.Downstairs, breakfast was unhurried. Charlotte chattered between bites, while Nathaniel ate methodically, listening more than he spoke. Sebastian watched silently, noting everything.Outside, the car waited. Manfred, the driver, held the door open with precise calm. Jamal lingered a few steps back, eyes scanning as Nathaniel slid into the back seat. Jamal settled in the front, alert but unobtrusive. The car glided away, silent against the city streets. The drive was uneventful at first, familiar streets, predictable traffic. Then Jamal noticed the s

Celebrations didn’t stop the game, they only forced it to be played in plain sight.Natasha didn’t linger. She never did. After delivering her quiet warning, she slipped back into the room as if nothing had passed between them, laughing lightly with Celeste, accepting a drink, elegance effortless. To anyone watching, she was just another guest: composed, polished, harmless.Sebastian knew better. From the corner of his eye, he tracked Natasha as she approached Arthur and Emilia. Pleasantries were exchanged, smiles carefully measured. Natasha’s hand touched Emilia’s arm, intentional but fleeting. Emilia accepted it with polished warmth, attentive, assessing, open, but never unguarded. Their interaction flowed smoothly, two women fluent in appearances.Arthur, by contrast, offered only restrained courtesy. His nod was polite but distant, his attention already returning to the twins, the party, the moment, anything but her.Gideon remained a step behind, observing. His gaze moved methodi

“Even in celebration, the past has a way of arriving uninvited.”Days after the boardroom battle, home life had settled into a delicate rhythm. Sebastian and Alina focused on the twins, each day punctuated with meals, bedtime stories, and small ordinary moments that kept their world steady. Natasha’s threats lingered, but for now, they remained private, locked between Sebastian and Alina. The weekend of the twins’ birthday arrived, and the house burst into color. Balloons floated near the ceiling, banners stretched across the walls, and laughter rang freely. Nathaniel, crisp in a tiny suit that made him look far older than six, observed the room with composed curiosity, while Charlotte twirled in a sparkling pink dress, her joy practically glowing in the sunlight.Sebastian moved among the decorations in his tailored suit, a quiet smile tugging at his lips as he watched the children. Alina, graceful in a flowing pastel maxi dress, adjusted party favors, her calm presence grounding the

The next morning was calm. Sunlight spilled across the study, illuminating the papers Sebastian had left out. By the time Alina and the children woke, he had been at his desk for hours, coffee long cold, working with precise focus.Across from him, John moved swiftly through encrypted files. Sylvia stood composed beside him, posture straight, one of the few Sebastian fully trusted. At the far end, Elsa sorted courier logs and manifests, the soft shuffle of papers and steady typing forming a quiet rhythm. They weren’t at Vaughn Enterprises for a reason. Two days earlier, John had flagged unusual activity in the company’s security logs, reports leaking before completion. A spy. Now, the team worked safely in Sebastian’s home.Accounts and shipping records glowed faintly on the screens. Each transaction carried a false name; every path led to Gideon Fairfax.“Cross-check the transfers again,” Sebastian said. “Every shell account tied to Fairfax Trading. Verify timestamps and recipients.”

The drive home had been quiet, a reflective silence that carried the weight of the day.By the time they reached the driveway, afternoon light spilled gold across the steps. Martin lifted Charlotte easily as she laughed. Nathaniel followed, composed as ever, slipping off his shoes neatly. Alina paused, taking in the familiar warmth after the Vaughn estate’s grandeur.Charlotte bounded toward the couch. “Daddy, when do I go back to school?”“Not yet, sweetheart,” Sebastian said faintly. “We’ll make sure you’re ready.”Alina set down a tray of snacks with Agnes. “For now, you’ll have a teacher at home,” she said gently. “We’ll cover reading, numbers, stories, everything your classmates are learning, until you’ve fully recovered.”Charlotte’s eyes brightened. “Really? Every day?”“Yes, every day,” Alina said, brushing a hand over her daughter’s hair. “And piano and art lessons too. You’ll keep learning, but you’ll rest when your body needs it.”Nathaniel settled beside Charlotte, quiet p
