Chapter 71

Author: River Fish
Although Phoebe had suspected that as much, hearing it with her own ears was a different experience entirely. It was like encountering a person one disliked in real life. When they were out of sight, they would barely stir one's emotions. But after meeting them, even a fleeting second of dislike would spoil one's day.

That was why running into Connor like this hurt her all over again.

This time, however, as Phoebe processed the "pain", she realized that it didn't sting anymore. She felt nothing. Absolutely nothing.

As she stepped out of the restroom, Connor caught her in his peripheral vision. He didn't consider her feelings, finishing his call with Lance before turning to face her.

His expression was neutral, but for once, he looked at her closely. She wasn't the same as before.

She wore a high-quality, unbranded white suit. It was tailored well, and it emphasized her cool, sharp demeanor. She seemed more commanding than usual.

That was what unsettled him.

"Why are you here?" h

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 295

This was Connor's house. The sight of Gideon there was something Phoebe had never anticipated, leaving her utterly stunned. He wore just the dress shirt from the dinner earlier. He usually kept every button fastened, but now, the top two were undone. It gave him a slightly less polished edge than his typical refined demeanor, yet it only amplified the intimidating chill he carried. Phoebe couldn't even bring herself to meet his eyes.Gideon saw the tears on her face. This was probably the first time he had ever seen her like this. His hands balled into fists by his sides, and he swept a cold gaze over her. Then, he locked eyes with Connor behind her, his gaze turning as sharp as blades. He was furious.Phoebe didn't dare say a single word. Only Connor could withstand the kind of pressure Gideon radiated.Connor's expression was just as cold and menacing. He already knew how Gideon felt about Phoebe, so seeing Gideon here didn't even surprise him.Since childhood, Gideon had alway

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 294

Connor sneered. "If you would just listen to me…"Phoebe didn't follow his lead. Her gaze sharpened as she cut straight to the heart of it. "Or are you being like this because you can't let me go?"The hands hanging at Connor's sides suddenly balled into tight fists. After a brief silence, he scoffed. "Of course not!"Phoebe couldn't make sense of him anymore. He despised her and had always kept her at arm's length with nothing but indifference. Yet, he'd actually tried to kiss her earlier. She could understand him being upset because of Gideon. But given how much he loathed her, his usual reaction to anything that annoyed him would be the same as always—verbal humiliation, mocking sarcasm, and that contemptuous look like she was trash. She had no idea why he would demand a kiss.To Phoebe, wanting a kiss implied possessiveness. But Connor didn't love her. He had no desire to possess anything about her.Something was off about him, and she couldn't read him anymore. As such, she

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 293

Connor stared unblinkingly into Phoebe's eyes, his own glinting coldly. If he hadn't just demanded a kiss, she would've thought that he wanted to strangle her.A man's fragile ego was honestly laughable. So, this was Connor's true weakness. All she had to do was refuse, and it would hit him harder than anything. She left out a mocking laugh and turned her head away. Her wrists were still bound by his belt, so she couldn't break free. If they weren't, she'd have already slapped him hard across the face.Connor stared at her profile, her rejection written clearly across her face. That made his tumultuous heart sink lower and lower. He forcibly turned her face back toward him, a faint ferocity twisting his features. "You won't even look at me now?""I can't even be bothered to waste my breath on you," she curtly said. For the first time, Connor realized how deeply a person's rejection and indifference could cut. He'd only wanted Phoebe to soften and submit to him. If she had, he woul

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 292

Connor's heart thudded hard, like one of those movie moments where someone's heart suddenly skipped a beat. He had never felt anything like it in his life… until now. However, he simply brushed it off. A racing heart now and then was normal. It didn't mean anything about being moved or anything like that. The only issue was that his heartbeat became increasingly erratic and rapid. His breathing grew heavier, too.Connor felt like an idiot because getting that answer straight from Phoebe had inexplicably lifted his mood somewhat. Not that it lasted—the disgust she felt for him now was so intense that it was almost impossible to believe."If you love someone, you'll keep falling for them over and over. What's this resistance you have toward me now, then?" he asked.Phoebe thought to herself that the past three years of her life really had been wasted. If everything she'd done didn't count as love, then what the hell did?Connor's friends had called her a clingy doormat behind her b

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 291

Phoebe blinked in surprise. Earlier, she'd regretted losing the opportunity to give Connor a show by kissing Gideon. But now, it turned out that he'd watched it from the shadows. That explained the stalking and snatching of the cup—Connor was upset and jealous.Naturally, this whole outburst was really about Gideon. It had nothing to do with her.Phoebe had never been more grateful to work at Spectrum Group. It was the reason she had met Gideon. Without him, she would have had no way to fight back whenever Connor came looking for trouble.Right now, just thinking about how his loss of control stemmed from her kissing the man he hated most filled her with a rush of satisfaction. She finally had the upper hand. For once, the cold fury in Connor's eyes actually pleased her. She smiled and said disdainfully, "The kiss is nothing. Wait until I actually sleep with him. You can throw your tantrum then."In the past, when Phoebe had said that, Connor had brushed it off as an empty threat

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 290

Nothing turned out as Connor had expected. Everything had spiraled into surprises and a loss of control—so even he hadn't anticipated bringing Phoebe back to the villa. He had brought her back. But now what? They were divorced. What else could possibly happen? For a moment, Connor felt genuinely lost. He had no idea what he was doing. He could drag Gideon into this as an excuse—he didn't want to see him and Phoebe together, so he'd brought her home. That was a perfectly solid, believable reason. But with Phoebe in his arms, not struggling yet looking at him with nothing but disgust…It was only when he could truly sense her emotions that he realized that bringing her back had nothing to do with Gideon. He just wanted to see the old Phoebe again—the one without all these thorns, and who could speak to him calmly. He believed that his mood would settle if she did that. He wouldn't feel this restless and out of control. He didn't even dare hope she would soothe him anymore, but she
