Charlene tossed and turned, uncomfortable in the new environment, fearing the worst for her father. She had a bunch of questions she needed answered. What did her father mean about the family tree, crushing the house? Who were Odo and Beth? Drinking poison? And so many other things she didn’t understand. She had a lot of questions and didn’t want to wait until he woke up.

A gentle hand touched her forehead. A restless Charlene was transported to a dream state. Never-ending orange and yellow sand stretched as far as the eye could see. Two orbits hovered in the eastern sky. A voice said, “You have questions, and I have answers.” Charlene was shocked.

“How did I get here?”

“My child, you’re in a dream state. Ask your questions.”

Charlene hesitated. “I was wondering...”

“Well?” ReNew said. “Spit it out. She can hear your thoughts anyway, Char.”

“You were thinking about it and couldn’t sleep,” the spirit continued. “And you have a lot to accomplish tomorrow, so I thought I would step in and give a little advice, if you don’t mind.”

“Yes, please,” Charlene said, bowing her head in reverence.

Charlene chose her words carefully. “My father was wounded in an attack.”

“You’re wondering if he’ll be okay? You’re very caring—not only for family but for everyone you meet. Your parents should be proud. Don’t worry, he’ll wake up with a headache, but he’ll be fine.”

“Walk with me.”

Charlene could feel the warm sand between her toes. The first spirit glided across it, barely touching the surface.

“I have a question for you,” the spirit said. “Have you wondered where you got some of those traits from?”

“No, not really. I know my father had a hard time growing up here in The Realm. Something about his emotional state—I keep hearing about it.” Rolling her eyes and shaking her head, Charlene sighed. Just thinking about the things he had to go through as a child made her upset.

“I can shed light on some things for you.”

“Oh, please do!”

“Have you ever felt overly sensitive to other people’s feelings?”

“Yes!”

“As if you were them, and had to fix it, no matter what?”

“All the time! It makes my heart ache, to tell the truth. I thought I was going mad!” Charlene turned her head away in shame.

“That’s nothing to be ashamed of, my darling. I’ve felt this way for over a millennium.”

The spirit smiled brightly at Charlene.

“Odo also carried this trait. He found the calling too much to bear. He suppressed it. He chose a lesser role as a journeyer, where he fell in love with Beth. They got married and had a son named Seth—your father—who also carried this trait. But he was never told of its great importance and was chastised anytime he showed signs of it. That grew a giant wedge between him and his parents. Then the trait passed down to you, my darling Charlene.”

“What’s so bad about having emotions? I don’t understand.”

“They’re not just mere emotions.” The first spirit cupped Charlene’s face in her hands. Her face glowed, showing her all the fates in the realm—their joy, sadness, fear, excitement.

To her surprise, Charlene could feel and see it all now.

“You are able to sense the emotions of the entire realm of Fates, which helps you to guide them—and rule them.”

Charlene gently removed the first soul’s hands from her face and looked her straight in the eyes, as if a light bulb had just gone off in her brain.

“So you’re telling me that my father is a direct descendant of you? I know every Fate is a descendant of yours in this realm, of course, but… my father is actually your grandson?”

“If you want to use human terms, then yes!” she said with a smile.

“That makes me your great-great-granddaughter?”

“You can take some of those ‘greats’ off of there,” she laughed. “You make me sound real old.”

Charlene giggled. “Wow! I have a Gi-Gi! How awesome is that! Do you mind if I call you that?”

She thought about it. “No, I don’t. Gi-Gi it is!”

The first spirit beamed at her new nickname.

“You gave me something,” Charlene said. “I’d like to give you something in return.”

“The gift of you being my great granddaughter is more than enough.”

Her hands glowed, then she pressed them on Charlene’s forearm. Something changed beneath Charlene’s skin, and it started to burn. Her spear mark had transformed into a sword.

“I have gifted you with a two-edged sword called The Marrow Blade. All you need to do is call its name. It will come to assist you. It’s unbreakable. Do you see the markings on it?”

Charlene looked down her arm and saw all the sigils carved into the blade.

“It also directs energy straight through it or blocks attacks. It packs quite a punch, so be careful.”

Gi-Gi could sense the process becoming too painful, so she sent a cooling sensation to her arm.

“That should feel better.”

Charlene smiled.

The whole thing was over in seconds. The pain subsided, and she had a whole new set of markings.

“Thank you, Gi-Gi.” She gave her a big hug.

The first spear didn’t know how to react. No one had openly shown her affection in so long, she couldn’t remember when.

“You’re welcome. Call me if you ever need me. I’m always here, watching.”

“One more thing, Charlene. I need you to tell your father to bring the Sec to Audubon. Everything you’ll need is there waiting for him. Can you remember that?”

“Yes, Gi-Gi!”

“Now wake up. Your father is stirring, and you have lots to discuss. I’ll see you in Audubon. Make haste—go now.”

Gi-Gi waved her hand. A white light flashed, and Charlene started to wake up.

She turned over and saw her dad sitting up.

“Good morning, sleepyhead!”

“Dad, you’re awake! I have so much to tell you.”

A twinge of pain stung her arm when she used it to get up. She looked down at her forearm.

Charlene saw all the new symbols. “It’s still here.”

She smiled and jumped over to where her dad was resting to give him the good news.

“Careful, princess. I’m a little sore.”

Charlene gently hugged him. “Your princess has a lot to discuss!”

  • Beyond Fate   There's something I need to tell you.

The journey felt endless. They had been walking for miles through fields littered with fallen bodies—twisted forms scorched and frozen mid-scream. The destruction was unspeakable.“This... this can’t all be from Charlene, can it?” ReNew asked softly, her voice trembling like a whisper in a storm.“There’s too much carnage for one girl,” Argun replied, scanning the area for signs of an ambush. “But I won’t underestimate her.”“Is she attacking them, or defending herself?” Odo muttered as he studied the ruins of a nearby demon outpost.Argun crouched beside a charred corpse. “This one was hit in the back, mid-run. She’s not hunting them—they’re running from her.”Destiny hovered slightly above the ground, eyes tracking the wisps of black smoke drifting toward a rocky slope. “Whatever’s happening, they know she’s here. They fear her.”“They should,” Beth added, her voice firm. “She’s not a child anymore.”“They’ll think twice before coming at us again,” Odo said with pride, puffing out h

  • Beyond Fate   Is anybody home?

“Hello? Is anyone home?” Seth stepped into Argun's house, his voice echoing slightly in the still air. No response. He moved cautiously through the rooms until a soft noise led him toward the back. There, pacing behind a locked cage, was Asbeel. “Argun and the Queen—” Asbeel’s voice was sharp with frustration, “they’ve gone. To the demon domain. They're looking for your daughter.” Seth blinked. “Then why are you locked up? Why aren’t you helping them?” Asbeel launched into a long-winded tale about misunderstandings, warnings, and Argun being overly cautious. Seth didn’t wait for the conclusion. “Forget it.” He unlatched the cage with a grunt. “You’re coming with me.” He tossed together supplies—some gear, rations, a waterskin—and grabbed a familiar backpack. “Argun won’t mind.” As Seth headed toward the portal, it shimmered—and Idris popped out. “There you are,” Seth muttered. “Feeling better, I see.” “Don’t try to stop me.” Idris raised both hands. “Relax. I’m not here to

  • Beyond Fate   something is hunting us

“Ask your question, child!” the dragon commanded.Charlene floated in the air, facing the cave’s mouth. Either this demon didn’t know what she was—or didn’t care. Either way, it was going to die.She already made up her mind.“What is your name, demon?” Charlene asked, voice calm and disarmingly gentle, as if coaxing a frightened puppy from beneath a couch. The creature slithered deeper into the shadows of the cave, its voice echoing ominously. “My name, child? It’s Lord Leviathan.”That was all she needed to hear.Like a possessed banshee, Charlene charged into the cave, her energy blazing. The clash was immediate—slashing, slicing, metallic clangs and demonic howls filled the air. The sounds echoed out into the snowy landscape in a chaotic symphony of death. The battle raged for minutes until—Silence.Charlene emerged from the mouth of the cave soaked in blood, a jeweled crown gleaming on her head and emerald rings adorning her fingers. A bloody trail melted the snow behind her as

  • Beyond Fate   You got to be kidding me

"You need to get up off that couch, now!" Destiny’s voice thundered through the room like a war drum. She was not in the mood for diplomacy today."Queen Destiny!" Torock fell to his knees so fast it looked like gravity betrayed him personally."What part of get up didn’t you understand?" Argun crossed the room in three long strides and bent to grab the trembling man’s arm, helping—or rather hauling—him to his feet.“I don’t have time for this,” Destiny said, her voice clipped and urgent. “We’ll talk later. Right now, I need you.”“Whatever I can do to help, I’ll do it,” Torock stammered, pressing his palms together in an awkward display of servitude. His whole body shook with anxiety.Tabitha, clearly unimpressed, stepped forward and folded her arms. “Can this wait? I was in the middle of a therapy session with him. And for once, I was making progress.”Destiny turned to her and smiled with polite dismissal. “Sorry, but no. We don’t have time to waste. I’ll explain everything later.

  • Beyond Fate   where's the little ones?

The demon domain was a chaos of shifting terrain—a scorched maze of rivers that bled into caverns, crumbling cliffs, and a desert that pulsed with heat like the breath of a furnace.“Where in the world do we even start looking for Charlene?” Argun asked, peering through the rippling portal. They looked toward the edge of outer darkness, where lakes of fire churned and portal after portal blinked open like angry eyes. All around them were scenes of torment—souls being dragged through ash and flame, their cries echoing with weeping and gnashing of teeth. The sounds could drive any mortal insane. But Destiny had been here before. She didn’t flinch. Her eyes scanned past the rivers of flame and writhing creatures, searching.Through all the chaos, Gigi pointed, her voice tight. “What’s that over there?”They turned to where she was indicating. Through the smoke and the smolder, a trail of unmoving bodies stretched along a rocky embankment.“See the ones between the torches?” she whispered

  • Beyond Fate   crushing blow

"Leave my dad alone!" Charlene screamed, blinking to her father's side. The demon was far stronger than the others they'd faced. Its smoke-like tentacles pinned Seth to the ground, trying to force their way into his body. The mark resisted possession, but Seth’s body was being crushed under the pressure.A separate wall of tentacles barred Heth from intervening.Charlene’s instincts kicked in. She summoned the energy orbs she’d trained with earlier and launched them like a barrage from a celestial M-16. The blasts slammed into the smoke tentacles.“Hold on, Dad! I’m coming!”She pushed forward, pouring everything into breaking through the barrier.High above, Odo transformed mid-flight. A fiery arrow formed around his body as he shouted, “Lightning Arrow!” He descended like a meteor, crashing into the tentacles with an explosion of blinding light. It lit up the sky like a miniature sun.At the same time, Charlene broke through the smoke wall and dove toward Seth, sliding across the sc

  • Beyond Fate   early rising

Chapter: Early RisingThe morning air was still thick with dew when Seth and Charlene wrapped up their early workout. ReNew and Heth arrived shortly after, just in time for an unplanned mission—one that involved family and, hopefully, breakfast.“It’s really early,” Charlene grumbled, rubbing her arms. “The first orb is barely even in the sky.”As if on cue, a rooster crowed loudly in the distance.ReNew winced. “Are we seriously doing this? Should we be here? I mean… last time we just showed up, remember?” She leaned in closer. “Are we trying to get shot?”Seth chuckled, unbothered. “They’re not that bad, girls. This is a working farm—they’ve probably been up for hours.”“Doing what, exactly?” ReNew asked, eyeing the quiet barn suspiciously. The girls and Heth started strolling toward the house.“Where are you going?” Seth asked, confused.“To get breakfast, of course,” Charlene answered flatly, brows furrowed.“I said they’re working. On the farm,” Seth said, pointing toward the lar

  • Beyond Fate   she's not in the mood!

She wasn’t in the mood to talk. Not today. ReNew had stayed locked away in her room, silent and simmering. But Charlene? She showed up, just like she promised—ready to meet her dad.Seth was already waiting for her, seated at the edge of the glowing lagoon inside the cave. His shirt was off, revealing the tight muscle cords across his back, and he hummed softly while stretching, legs spread on the mat beneath him. He didn’t turn when she approached.“Join me,” he said simply, patting the mat beside him.Charlene sat down, unsure of what they were doing, but willing to follow. She tilted her head as she watched.“Do what I’m doing,” Seth said calmly. “Breathe slowly and steadily. Inhale deep… now exhale. Good. This helps oxygenate your muscles and prevents them from cramping.”She mirrored his movements, mimicking his slow stretches.“Stretching,” he continued, “isn't just about flexibility. It’s about control. Grace. Power. Exhale as you deepen into the stretch. Hold it for at least t

  • Beyond Fate   Explain yourself young lady!

Seth looked at her with a storm of concern flashing across his face."CHARLENE, WHAT DID YOU DO?" he demanded. She froze, caught off guard by his tone. “I taught him a lesson. That’s all!” she said, a little too defensively.Seth’s eyes scanned her—sharp, observant. Then he noticed it. Her soul—ReNew—wasn’t with her. That might explain it. ReNew had been in the cave ever since they’d left his parents’ house.“Tell me you didn’t kill him!” Seth choked out, his voice cracking. He gripped the broken necklace in his hand like it was a lifeline. “Tell me you didn’t do something irreversible just to get this stone. Answer me, Princess. Please!”“Dad, seriously? The plan was to get them to give us the hidden place stones, remember?” Charlene replied. “So we could understand what he’s up to and what their return really means. And I did just that.”Seth looked like he’d aged ten years in a second. “I understand the assignment,” he said, “but Charlene—answer me, please.”She waved him off, tryi
