“You have to be nice to her, I don’t care how you felt about her in the past. Everything has changed now, so the two of you will be on your best behavior.” I gave my parents a subtle warning as we talked on the phone.

A beat of silence passed before my mother scoffed. “Are you trying to say that your parents don’t know how to behave?”

“Exactly. That is what I’m trying to say.” I replied coldly. “I just wanted to make sure that we are all on the same page.”

“Lucas.” My father chimed into the conversation. “We raised you better than to lecture us.” There was a hint of annoyance in his voice.

I ignored his words. It wasn’t time to go back and forth with them. I just wanted to make sure that they don’t cause any trouble for Layla.

I wanted to stay in her good graces.

“And I expect better from both of you. This conversation is over.”
