When Adriana slowly opened her eyes, the sharp smell of disinfectant was the first thing that hit her. She was lying face down on a pillow, her back still aching from the wounds caused by shattered glass. Everything around her confirmed that the attack she had experienced was no illusion.
Thankfully, by the grace of God, she was still alive.
"Ah! Ma'am, you're finally awake! You scared me to death!"
Mona threw herself at Adriana, who was still hooked up to an IV drip. Her tears and snot smeared across Adriana's hospital gown as she sobbed uncontrollably.
"The doctors said if you'd been just an inch closer to the car, you might… you might…" Mona choked up, unable to finish her sentence. "I TOLD YOU I SHOULD'VE DRIVEN YOU HOME!"
Adriana frowned at the sudden pressure on her weak body. Dizzy from the hug, she barely had the strength to think but instinctively tried to console the clearly frightened Mona.
"Mona, calm down! You're getting snot and tears all over my clothes!"
"Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to!" Mona quickly pulled away, only to suddenly exclaim, "No, wait! THAT'S NOT THE POINT RIGHT NOW! You have no idea how worried I was when the hospital called me!"
Adriana gazed at the young woman before her, whose face was full of concern. A rare warmth filled her heart. It had been so long since anyone had cared for her this way. With some effort, she raised her hand and gently brushed Mona's cheek, her voice soft.
"Alright, alright. It's my fault. I shouldn't have refused your offer to drive me."
Mona, caught off guard by Adriana's sudden apology, froze for a moment. She wasn't family, after all. Had her earlier reprimand been too much?
Sensing Mona's discomfort, Adriana spoke again, her voice steady but gentle. "I'm feeling a bit thirsty. Could you get me some water?"
"Oh, of course!" Mona hurriedly helped Adriana sit up before rushing to pour her a glass of water. Handing it over, she said, "By the way, I've already called the police. They're investigating the cause of the explosion. Don't worry, those responsible will be brought to justice!"
Adriana nodded as she drank, her mind already piecing things together. She had a good idea who orchestrated the attack. She had underestimated those people.
However, she did not intend to spend too much energy and time on this matter. After all, as a lawyer, she had a career and dreams that she had pursued her whole life, and she would not be afraid of those rats hiding in the sewers.
Moreover, after such an accident, the police would definitely focus on monitoring everyone who had a grudge against her. In this way, it meant that she would be relatively safe for a period of time.
After finishing her water, Adriana handed the glass back to Mona. "I'm aware of everything. Let the police handle it. Now, what about the information I asked you to prepare?"
"How can you think about work at a time like this?" Mona protested, holding the glass tightly. "The boss said you should rest first. Work can wait. Your health is more important!"
Adriana was not a pretentious woman. Since she wasn't seriously injured and her mind was still working, she didn't want to waste time.
What's more, Adriana was afraid that if she delayed anything regarding that Satan's case, only God knew what kind of trouble was awaiting her.
"Listen, if I rest now, I might as well dig my own grave and rest forever! Do you think delaying Mr. Calvin Walker's case is an option?"
At the mention of Calvin Walker, Mona stiffened like a soldier standing at attention. "I'll head back to the office right away and bring the files!"
Rumors had it that Calvin Walker was like a devil incarnate. His temper was legendary, and those who crossed him often disappeared without a trace. Even though Mona had never met him in person, his reputation alone was enough to make her uneasy.
Ever since their law firm had taken on his case, the atmosphere in the office had shifted dramatically.
Smiles had vanished, replaced by constant tension, and even their boss seemed perpetually on edge, as if weighed down by insurmountable debt.
Watching Mona scramble out in a panic, Adriana couldn't help but recall her own early days in the workforce. Shaking her head with a hint of amusement, she lay back down to rest.

Meanwhile, on the 14th floor, Calvin had already changed clothes and arrived outside the room, faintly hearing voices from within. Though he couldn't make out the words, it was clear that the patient on this floor in critical condition wasn't Adriana.
He chuckled bitterly at his foolishness.
No, he who rushed up to save the woman yesterday was the most foolish of all! He should've let her enemies finish her off.
And yet, when he thought of her lying in his arms, bleeding and unconscious, an inexplicable pain gripped his chest, as if someone was squeezing his heart. It was unbearable.
"Fine," he muttered to himself. "Let's just call it an act of charity."
Hearing Mona's hurried footsteps approaching, Calvin ducked into the stairwell like a mouse avoiding a cat.
"Damn it!" he cursed under his breath, frustrated with his own behavior.
After hearing the elevator descend, Calvin emerged from the stairwell and walked back toward Adriana's hospital room and, without further hesitation, kicked open the door!
Adriana was resting on the bed when suddenly the ward door was kicked open by a force. Adriana turned to look at the door in shock. However, as soon as she did, Calvin's dark face entered her eyes.As soon as the four eyes met, the whole room was filled with the cold air.For a moment, Adriana was in a trance. Did her brain get damaged by the explosion? Or did she start to hallucinate? What kind of bad luck does she have? Why is she seeing Calvin standing there?Adriana cursed inwardly.Calvin’s breathing was a little uneven. So, he stood there with a cold face.Adriana was leaning against the bed. There were a few bruises on her forehead, and her hand was wrapped in a bandage.Calvin remembered that when he carried Adriana to the hospital, her back was bleeding and there were a few glass pieces pierced in it. So, the biggest incision should be on her back.Adriana blinked her eyes! Looking at Calvin's cold face, she was sure that it wasn't a hallucination, which made her feel even mo
“No need, I will do it myself!” Adriana said as she tried to hold her shirt. But her one hand was infused with IV drip and her other hand was injured. So, no matter how hard she tried to hold her shirt, she couldn’t use any strength and failed.Calvin stands there quietly, watching her struggle. He was waiting for her to come back again in frustration. He said coldly, “Don’t try to be so brave?”The nurse looked at him like some crazy fan and said, “Handsome, all girls are like this! They say something else and mean something else! Come and hold her!”Adriana wanted to try again when a black figure surrounded her. Then, she was half embraced by a pair of strong arms.Suddenly the familiar fragrance of mind and rose filled in her nose, bringing back those memories she tried to forget.Adriana’s body stiffened. Her heart was beating so fast that she felt that it would jump out from her chest. The wounds on her back had not started to heal yet. As the thin layer of serum floated on the s
After staying in the hospital for a week, Adriana returned to work. She was busy in her office when Aidan walked in, his face beaming with a broad smile. “Adriana, have you recovered well? Why don’t you rest for a few more days?”Looking at his expression, Adriana smiled kindly. “Aidan, if you have something to say, just say it. You don’t have to beat around the bush.”“As expected… You’re the one who knows me best! I can’t hide anything from you!”He handed Adriana a paper bag and said, “Grand Empire is so generous! Not only do they offer a great salary, but they also provide housing. And not just any housing—it’s in the best residential complex in the whole city!”Adriana opened the paper bag suspiciously. A diamond-shaped key fell out, along with an access card.Written in bold on the card were the words: Green Wick Residential Complex. It was indeed the city’s most prestigious residential area. Even if you had money, buying a property there wasn’t guaranteed. The complex was a hig
The crushing pain in her stomach intensified, and Adriana clenched her fists tightly. Her hands were slick with sweat.“What is it?” she asked, her voice strained.Calvin exhaled a puff of smoke, his demeanor casual. “Even though you won the lawsuit and earned fifty thousand dollars in legal fees, you also got into an accident and nearly lost your life. Don’t you want to know who’s behind it?”“The police are still investigating…” Adriana paused, suddenly suspicious. “Did you investigate me?”“Of course. You’re my legal counselor, so I had to evaluate your business abilities. I didn’t expect you to be a lawyer who lacks basic common sense,” he said, his tone sharp. “I really don’t know how you managed to get your bar license twice.”“I…” Adriana was momentarily at a loss for words.Calvin extinguished his cigarette on the lid of a nearby trash can and said, “Let’s go. I’ll take you to meet someone.”Thinking it was a work-related matter, Adriana didn’t ask too many questions and got i
Sitting in the car, Adriana felt a chill running down her spine. The scene of the dagger chopping off the man’s hand replayed in her mind like a movie. This man is too dangerous! His work was so clean that even if he killed a hundred people, no one would find out. What’s more, even if he wanted to do something, he didn’t even need to do it himself.Just like in the past.“Calvin, Carl said something wrong! Why didn’t you point him?”“What?”Adriana pointed at herself, saying, “He said that I am your wife! But I am not your wife anymore! We are already divorced!”Calvin looked at her coldly, “What’s the difference between what I have used, before and after?”For a while, Adriana didn’t know what to say, so she shut up! Calvin also didn’t say anything else.“Where are you going before?”Suddenly, the man sitting in the driver's seat spoke. His voice was low and mellow, like soothing music.“Huh?”“I asked, where are you going so late?”Only then did Adriana remember that she was going t
Calvin looked at the advertisement expressionlessly. The sales girl took out two boxes and settled the bill together, “It’s a new model and very popular!”Calvin didn’t refuse and said, “Help me make a cup of ginger tea, thank you!”Adriana went to the bathroom to do the aftermath. When she looked at her pants, she frowned. It was ruined completely. Then, Calvin’s car would be also ruined, right?’Adriana's face darkened as she stood outside the car, feeling embarrassed to get in. “Well, I will take a taxi, you can go by yourself!”Calvin rolled down the passenger seat window and sneered coldly, “After dirtying mine car, you also want to dirty others.”Adriana wanted to laugh, but she couldn’t. He is worthy of the title of King of Hell. His words were always cold and ruthless. As soon as Adriana got in the car, Calvin handed her a cup of hot ginger tea, “Drink it!”Adriana looked at him suspiciously, thinking, ‘Where did he get it?’“What? You don’t want to drink? Then throw it away!
Adriana looked at him calmly and said, “In that case, please go ahead. I am not going to invite you in. Please excuse me.”Calvin said coldly, “Adriana, you have changed a lot.”Hearing his sarcastic remarks, she smiled back, “Really? By the way, you also have changed a lot. After all, with your temper before, I am afraid Carl’s brother-in-law would not have just lost an arm.”Calvin smiled coldly, looking at Adriana without blinking. He just opened his mouth slightly, showing his porcelain white teeth.Objectively speaking, Adriana is very beautiful. She had smooth white skin and with perfect and exquisite figure. The number had times Calvin had intimate contact with her body was not much, but he still remembered her dazzling body. However, it was a pity that her heart was even more poisonous than a snake and scorpion.Thinking about the betrayal she did to him, Calvin clenched his fists tightly and his face was filled with the coldness.“What? Are you feeling bad for him?”Adriana w
“Adriana?”The maid recognized her and greeted her.Looking at the person in front of her, Adriana breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, “Maria, long time no see!”Maria is a woman in her fifties. She is George’s nanny, in charge of his food and living. Maria is a clean and tidy lady. Even after so many years, she hadn’t changed much. She is still as gentle as before.Maria is the only person who treats Adriana well in this house.Maria looked around before taking a few steps forward. “Have you had a good time these past few years? Why did you lose so much weight?”Adriana and Calvin’s divorce was unknown to the outside world. Even the maids of the house didn’t know about it. They had inadvertently learned about it from their master’s conversation a few months later. Then things about the netting of the family and the sweeping of their reputations came to their ears one after the other.Other people discussed privately that Adriana was kicked out of her house, some say that the Clarke
Having lived among New York’s high society for a few years and come into contact with quite a few celebrities and aristocrats, Maria immediately asked, “Global Entertainment’s Ray William? Eastern William’s only son?”“That’s him.”Maria wasn’t sure what Adriana was up to this time, but her instincts told her it would be even more difficult than the last task. She couldn’t help but ask, “Do you have a personal grudge against him?”She remembered Ray was Calvin’s friend. Shouldn’t he be on good terms with Adriana? Then why did Adriana’s expression show such obvious dislike?Adriana never suspected others lightly, never used people carelessly, and never hid the truth from Maria. “He used despicable means to hurt my friend. But the real target… is me. It’s not that I hold a grudge—it’s that he’s prejudiced against me. And if I don’t strike first, he’s going to make his move soon.”Maria nodded instinctively as she listened. She was starting to believe Adriana’s words. Deep down, she felt
Calvin stood alone in the smoking area, lighting a cigarette and leaning against the parapet. He drew in a deep mouthful of smoke, letting it burn through his lungs.(The young madam even asked me to teach her how to make a fish cake... but it was hard for her. She was a true lady — ten fingers never touching spring water. She burned her fingers, blistered them, but never said a word about the pain.)Fish cakes — such a distant memory. If Emily hadn’t pried open that forgotten gate of memory, perhaps Calvin would never have remembered it again in his life.It had been late — well after 1:00 a.m. — when he returned to New York after a long inspection trip at the England branch. The living room was dimly lit by a single floor lamp.As he put down his luggage, he noticed Adriana curled up on the sofa, asleep. On the table beside her, a plate of fish cakes sat quietly, waiting for him.The next morning, as he passed the dining room, he spotted the plate again and frowned."Why didn’t you
There was no need for Calvin to explicitly say anything; certain unspoken rules were already understood — Adriana knew them all. There was no point in going through the usual formalities again, not against someone like Darren, who couldn’t rise to the occasion.Calvin examined the clear light in her eyes and once again understood what Henry had meant when he said Adriana had changed. In the past, she wouldn't have shown such calmness; her gaze would not have carried the wisdom it held now."Keep your co-worker in check and don’t let her do anything reckless. But of course, if you want to use this chance to get rid of an inconvenient opponent, you can just let it slide."Adriana nodded. "I know what to do."The ambiguous tension between them slowly faded as the conversation unfolded. Calvin glanced around the room. "Rest early."He’s letting me off that easily? Adriana thought."Good night," she said, getting up to see him off, without the slightest intention of trying to make anything
She had quite a bit of potential for uttering so many non-repetitive curse words in one night.Calvin caught her hand, not allowing her to leave. Then, right in front of her, he dialed a number. The call connected after just a few rings.“Mr. Walker? Wow, what an honor! What brings you to call me?” the voice on the other end said, half-joking.Calvin said coldly, “Contact Richard. Get him out of there — use whatever excuse you need.”The person on the other side didn’t dare to ask for details. “Yes, understood!”Calvin hung up and turned to look at Adriana, whose eyes were red with rage.“Aren’t you going to thank me?” he said lazily.Adriana tried to shake off his hand but couldn’t.“Calvin, you’re only making things more awkward between us. Please pay attention to boundaries…”Calvin leaned in and said lowly, “If I hadn’t watched my step tonight, you'd be lying on my bed right now, under me, crying for mercy.”Adriana’s face flared with anger.Without hesitation, she raised her foot
Last time, she had been half-proud of herself for bravely refusing to go home with Calvin — but she didn’t expect to be back here again, in the blink of an eye.Adriana scratched her hair in distress.“To be clear, I’m just borrowing the room,” she muttered.Calvin glanced at her miserable-looking face and said lazily, “I suggest you clean yourself up first. I won’t lay my hands on a female ghost — even if I’m horny.”Adriana rushed into the restroom, only then realizing how horrible she looked with half her makeup removed during the car ride.Come to think of it, Calvin had kept his cool the entire way — not even driving the car into the green belt. His psychological endurance was strong enough, she had to admit. The bathroom was fully stocked with toiletries. After showering, Adriana came out wrapped in a bathrobe, only to find Calvin on the balcony, making a call.He stood near the window, one hand in his pants pocket, his back straight and imposing.“Send someone to keep an eye on
On what grounds?Because he was Calvin — a character you couldn’t afford to mess with, couldn’t afford to offend.Adriana wanted to answer for him, believing, you don't have a second choice. But Calvin’s actual response was more official and impossible to refuse: “Believe it or not, it’s up to you!”His desire to catch him worked. After a brief moment weighing his options, Darren engaged in a more thorough conversation with Calvin, roughly covering how to help him clean up his act, as well as the cooperation that would follow. The matter was negotiated without Calvin needing to mobilize a single soldier.Darren cheerfully took the initiative to toast, saying, “Since we’re partners now, can you tell us your name?”Calvin didn’t touch his wine glass. “Next time, I’ll naturally let you know.”Kevin crossed over and spoke to Darren: “Mr. Darren, waiting for your good news in three days!”Richard and Liam looked at each other in dismay. Darren was normally a cautious man; otherwise, his bu
Darren was an unfamiliar name to Adriana. But Calvin wouldn't mention someone unrelated for no reason. After thinking for two seconds, Adriana understood: this man, Darren, who hadn't shown his face until now, was probably Scar’s big brother.Scar himself didn’t even know what his Big Brother’s real name was — so how did Calvin just point it out directly?Richard’s face shifted from green to white, little by little. He felt that the worst kind of situation was about to happen. This strange man seemed to know far more about them than he should. And the more this became apparent, the more Richard dared not be careless. He forced a smile and tried to stall: "Darren? Which Darren is Brother referring to?"Not only Richard — even Liam, who was nearly drunk, and Austin Mark, still dizzy from slamming into the wall, were staring at Calvin warily. With their connections in New York City, most powerful people at least had recognizable faces. But this man — no one had any information on him at
Mina’s eyes could see six ways at once; she thought tonight felt unusual. She didn’t know who he was, but she knew she had to serve people because of Liam. If anything went wrong, Darren’s business could be soaked, so she smiled carefully."Two brothers, if there's something to say, let’s say it properly. Roughness can scare people off, you know."Kevin’s skin practically crawled from her flattery, and he snapped, "None of your business."Mina smiled softly and picked up a glass of wine. "Handsome, don’t be angry. Why don’t I have a drink with you?"She drank it all in one go, tilting the glass upside down to show not a single drop remained. "Satisfied, handsome?"Kevin said coldly, "Not satisfied."Mina blushed profusely, tugging awkwardly at the corner of her mouth. "Then, what would satisfy the handsome man?"Kevin kept a stern face and said nothing.Mina circled around the table and half-squatted down, trying to tap Calvin’s leg, but he dodged her with a disgusted look, as if a sl
Calvin’s cold and clear presence stood out starkly in the room—like a noble eagle trapped among vultures. From the moment he sat down, the atmosphere shifted. It was as if this seedy box suddenly became a royal court, simply because he was in it.Adriana had to admit, deep down, that sometimes it wasn’t the place that mattered—it was the people who entered it.Calvin turned to the man and asked flatly, “Tell me, what kind of dog are you?”“Damn it! Did you just insult me?”Furious, the man raised the wine bottle and swung it toward Calvin’s face.Crash! With a smooth backhand, Calvin caught the bottle mid-air—and in the next second, red liquid flowed down the man’s head. It was a mixture of wine and blood, trailing from the broken shards that remained. The man stood frozen in place, stunned. He clearly hadn’t expected anyone would dare lay a hand on him.&l
