ログインJeff frowned as he glanced at his watch. Today was Claire's memorial, and he had been secretly going there. No matter how hard he had tried, he hadn't been able to forget about her, and he had been preparing to go to her graveside today when Irene had called, informing him that Zane wanted to go to the park.
He couldn't think of any excuse because she doesn't even know that he had been visiting Claire's grave site, she doesn't need to find out anyway, so he just told her that he was, he would take Zane to the park tomorrow. If only Claire hadn't died five years ago, if only he hadn't made that promise to Irene after she had saved his life, if only it was Claire who had saved him, if only she wasn't so manipulating….if only, if only… but it is what it is and not going to change. He stood up from his desk and the door suddenly bursted open. “Irene, I told you…” “I know what you said Jeff but it doesn't mean I will allow you to do as you please, you have been neglecting our son for too long and I am not going to take it”. He stared at her for a moment, we have been married for five years and she still doesn't understand me, she always wants to have her way with everything even using our son. I clenched my teeth hard as the first spurt of irritation flared up within me. “I am not neglecting him, I am just busy”. “Busy? Oh yes! You are so busy thinking about her that we don't even matter to you anymore”. His eyes narrowed on her, has she been following him? “I don't know what you're talking about”. “Don't think that I won't notice Jeff. You are always thinking about Claire even though she's dead for five years…five years Jeff and you still couldn't get over her” “Why do you keep bringing Claire up? I told you that I don't care about her”. “Then why do you still have this?” She yelled and raised a handknitted handkerchief so that he would see. Jeff's insides went cold and he frowned as he stared at the handkerchief, he had even forgotten he had that in his drawer, the handkerchief belongs to the person who saved him years ago and that person was Irene, so why couldn't she recognize her own piece. “Are you playing pranks on me? That belongs to you right?” He said. “Don't you dare try to get out of this one, I am very well sane and I know my property, I personally saw Claire making this that night and embroidered the initial “I” on it which stands for Iris and we both know who that was”. Jeff's breath was constricted and he couldn't believe what he was hearing. “Why can't you just forget about her?” She cried obliviously to what he was passing through, “I am more beautiful and smarter than her plus we have a son together”. “Adopted” he said automatically as if that was what mattered at this point in time. Irene’s eyes widened in a split seconds of shock, she wasn't expecting that response from him, she knew how much he loves Zane and dots on him. “He is our son…adopted or not, he is ours”. She paused and thought of a drama that she would pull to get him begging her. She blinked severally and tears started coming out from her eyes, “I saved you all those years and you owe me your life, You promised to always make me happy remember?” “The necklace, where is the necklace?” he asked instead and she was taken aback. “What has that got to do with anything?” “Because that handkerchief belongs to the person who saved me years ago, if you insisted that it belongs to Claire, then…” She licked her suddenly dried lips as her insides went cold, she suddenly realized that she had made a very big mistake. “Where is the damn necklace, was it also for Claire?” he yelled and she jerked, startled by his sudden burst of anger. “Yes” she replied and her eyes widened when she realized her blunder. “I mean no…” Jeff took two steps towards her and his hand wrapped around her throat. “It was Claire, wasn't it? She saved me years ago and not you”. He whispered furiously and her eyes widened in fear. “No…I…” Jeff's grip on her neck tightened, “lie to me one more time and I wouldn't mind strangling you to death”. Panic laced her heart and she started struggling against his hold. “Please let me go”. She whispered in fear. She had never seen him this angry, his eyes were red in anger and she was beginning to fear that he would really strangle her. “Yes….yes, she saved you all those years, the necklace belongs to her”. Jeff looked devastated and his hand slowly dropped from her neck, her hands flew to her neck as she tried to suck in air. Jeff couldn't believe what he was hearing, it was Claire who saved him years ago, it was Claire that he was supposed to treat like a princess, she was supposed to be his wife…only that she was actually his wife and he treated her like trash and saw her as nothing more than a manipulator when it was Irene what was actually the manipulator and now it was too late because Claire was dead, it was too late to even ask for her forgiveness. “Jeff please, I lied because I love you so much, you loved me too right? Please do not let that affect us for the sake of our son…” One look from Jeff silenced her. He grabbed his car keys and dashed out of his office. His head was ringing as he entered his car, he was wrong and Claire was right. He remembered that she tried to tell him severally but each time, he scorned her and called her stupid, and now, it was obvious that he was actually the stupid one, he had closed his mind and believed Irene over her. He was so deep in thought that he didn't see the vehicle coming from the opposite direction until it was too late. The door closed behind her and she stared at Adrian, “go on and use the bathroom sweetheart”. She instructed and watched him leave.Claire leaned against the door and slid down to the floor. Her whole body was shaking and she couldn't breathe right and her chest hurt so badly she thought something inside had broken. She pressed her hand over her heart and the tears came. They poured down her face and she couldn't stop them and didn't try to because no one was watching and she could finally let herself fall apart. She spent five years trying to get over him and becoming someone new. She even convinced herself that she was over him.And one look at his face had shattered everything. The way he'd looked at her with those grey eyes full of shock and hope and desperation. The way he'd hugged her and whispered "Thank God you're alive" like she was something precious he'd lost. The way his voice had cracked when she pushed him away. She hated him.She hated him for what he'd done to her and
Jeff stood in the middle of the park watching her go. His mind was spinning and his chest felt like someone had reached in and squeezed his heart until it stopped beating. His eyes fell on the little boy walking beside her.The boy was four years old, which meant Claire, if that even was Claire, had gotten pregnant a full year after she died and had moved on and built a whole new life without him."Jeff." Irene's voice cut through his thoughts. "We need to go."He didn't move and couldn't stop staring at the spot where she had gone."That could be her." He whispered almost to himself."Don't be ridiculous." Irene's laugh was too sharp and too loud. "Claire is dead. We buried her five years ago. That woman just happened to look like her."Right, that was where he was confused, he had watched Claire being buried, how can one have such a striking resemblance to another?"You're seeing things because you feel guilty." Irene continued in a softer voice that almost sounded sympathetic. "It'
Claire had sighted Jeff earlier having nice time with his family and her teeth set on edge. He must have been very happy all these years with her gone. it's just her luck that he decided to come to the pack just when she decided to bring Adrian to the park. She was going to get Adrian so that they'll leave when she heard him call her. She stiffened but for just a moment.Jeff reached where she was and turned her around so that she could face him.“Claire, you're alive!” He cried and hugged her . Claire was disgusted, just one moment, he was having fun time with his family and the next moment he was crying over her as if he truly cared. What a prick!Claire pushed him away from her and he almost stumbled.“I'm sorry, I don't know what you are talking about”. She said gracefully.Jeff looked confused for a moment and stared hard at her. True, the person standing before him looks graceful, her manicure perfectly done, her hair was long and straight where Claire's was wavy and always p
"Daddy!" The door burst open and Zane came running in with his arms outstretched and his face lit up with pure joy. "Come play with me and Mommy! We're building a castle!"Jeff looked up from his laptop and his chest tightened because Zane's happiness was so genuine and so innocent and he had no idea what was happening between his parents."Buddy, Daddy's working right now." He tried to keep his voice gentle."But you're always working." Zane's bottom lip pushed out. "Mommy says families are supposed to spend time together."Of course she did."I'll play with you later, okay?" Jeff reached out and ruffled Zane's hair."Promise?" Zane's grey eyes were so hopeful."Promise."Zane ran back out and left the door wide open and Jeff could hear Irene's voice drifting down the hallway."See, sweetie? Daddy's too busy for us right now. But that's okay, we have each other."His jaw clenched and he forced himself to breathe through the rage because she was already starting her campaign and using
Claire's stomach clenched hard as the plane landed. She hadn't been to this part of the world for years and coming back was giving her a kinda sick feeling. She left Adrian in the hotel she had checked in after making him promise that he would stay put.The hospital was massive and busy and she kept her head down and her sunglasses on as she made her way to the emergency department."I'm looking for Howard Anderson." She tried to keep her voice steady but it came out shaky. "He was brought in about an hour ago. Heart attack."The nurse checked her computer. "He's in surgery now. Critical condition. Are you family?""Yes." The lie came easily because she needed it to. "I'm his granddaughter."The nurse's expression softened with sympathy. "Third floor. Surgical waiting area. The doctor will come out when there's news. I'm sorry, it's going to be a long wait."Claire took the elevator up and her heart was pounding so hard she thought everyone could hear it and her hands wouldn't stop tr
The video call connected and Howard's face filled the screen looking older and more tired than she remembered but his eyes lit up the moment he saw Adrian."There's my brilliant boy." Howard's voice was warm and full of love and it made Claire's chest ache with how much she'd missed having family."Great Grandpa! Look what I made!" Adrian climbed onto Claire's lap and held up a complex origami structure that he'd folded himself with his small fingers. "It's a tessellation pattern. I learned it from a video.""That's incredible, Adrian." Howard leaned closer to the camera and his face filled with pride. "You're getting smarter every day. Just like your mother."Claire smiled and felt warmth spread through her chest watching them interact. She had kept in touch with Howard all these years and true to his word, he didn't tell Jeff that she was still alive. He had been the only family she had and he adores Adrian so much."Can you teach me about stocks next time?" Adrian asked with his gr
