Chapter 3

Autor: Ink Brimm
I walked into the house, only to be met by a heavy, suffocating silence in the living room.

My older sister, Allison Hill, threw out a casual remark. "The background check board called today. Because a family member poses a major risk for public scandal, my security clearance is most likely going to be put on hold."

She looked up and glanced at me. "Are you happy now?"

My mother immediately began laying into me. "Your sister worked so hard to get this spot, and here you are dragging her down with this dirty scandal!"

I stood in the middle of the living room, completely drenched, water still dripping off my clothes. "Mom, the video is fake. It's an AI deepfake. I'm the victim here."

"Enough!" my father barked, cutting me off. "Who cares whether it's real or fake? The whole internet is talking about it, and everyone believes it!"

He pointed to a piece of paper lying on the coffee table. "Your mother and I have talked it over. There's only one solution. You're going to post a statement admitting it was you, saying you had a mental breakdown and made a terrible mistake in a moment of poor judgment."

My father paused, his eyes showing not a single trace of remorse. "As long as we frame it as a mental health episode, this whole thing will blow over, and your sister's security clearance won't be affected."

I stared at them in complete disbelief.

"And you need to hand over two hundred thousand dollars as a public relations fund," Allison added from the side, her tone completely flat. "This whole mess started because of you. You can't expect the family to clean it up for free."

I looked at the three of them—a calculating father, a biased mother, and a selfish sister.

"I'm not signing it," I said quietly, but crystal clear. "I'm not admitting to having a mental illness, and I'm not giving you a single dime."

Just then, a knock sounded at the front door.

"Mr. and Mrs. Hill, is Penelope back?"

Sam walked in. The dampness of the storm clung to him, his suit jacket slightly wet at the shoulders as if he had rushed straight over.

When he spotted me, he let out a visible sigh of relief. He took a few quick steps toward me, reaching out to brush away the wet hair sticking to my cheek.

"Penelope, stop making a scene. When I couldn't find you at the restaurant earlier, Ruby and I were worried sick."

I leaned away to dodge his hand, taking a step back. "You only remembered to look for me after you were done comforting her?"

Sam's hand froze, his brow immediately furrowing. "Penelope, I heard everything from the doorway just now. Your parents are right. Stop being so self-centered.

"You're bringing down both yourself and your sister. Just listen to your father. Put an end to this scandal first, and I'll handle the rest for you."

I looked at him, then glanced back at my parents, who were on the couch waiting coldly for my submission.

"Fine," I nodded slowly, my voice barely above a whisper.

I turned around and walked over to the cabinet where my official documents were stored, pulling out my birth certificate and personal files.

"Penelope, what are you doing?" my father asked, standing up in surprise.

Holding my documents tightly, I looked right at them.

"I'm not signing the paper, and I'm not giving you any money. But I'm not going to stay here and embarrass you either. I'm removing myself from this family, and from this day on, we go our separate ways."

Sam called out from behind me, his tone finally cracking with panic. "Penelope! Where are you going? Severing ties with your family is a huge deal. Don't be hasty!"

Without looking back, I gripped my documents and ran out into the pouring rain.

As the storm raged outside, I suddenly remembered the apartment my grandmother had left me—the only place I had left to go.

I called an Uber and headed straight to that older neighborhood across town.

Yet when the car pulled up and I looked up toward the familiar third-floor window, my entire body froze as if I had been plunged into an abyss of ice.

On the day of the trial, I was in court, though I didn't say much. Russell presented all the facts and arguments on my behalf. When the evidentiary chain was locked tight and all their lies were stripped away, Austin, Bailey, and Ruby stood at the defense table, devoid of their past arrogance.Austin kept his head bowed, not daring to make eye contact with me. Bailey cried so hard her makeup ran down her face, repeating over and over how much she regretted everything. Ruby was still desperately trying to throw Sam under the bus, claiming Sam was the mastermind behind it all.Sam sat in the gallery, his face deathly pale, remaining completely silent. The verdict was fair and swift: Austin was sentenced to eighteen months, Bailey was sentenced to twelve months, and Ruby received two years in prison.Although Sam didn't receive a prison sentence, his law license was permanently revoked by the Bar Association. On top of that, due to his direct involvement in exacerbating the severe em

Austin was arrested, Bailey was brought in for questioning, and Ruby was intercepted right at the airport. This series of events hit Sam's life like a string of massive explosives, completely blowing his world apart. His prized career was the very first thing to collapse.Matthew Ellis, the managing partner at his law firm, called him into the office."Sam, take a look at this," Matthew said, slamming a printed online post right onto his desk. The headline read: [Prominent Lawyer Helps Mistress Drive Girlfriend to the Brink—Chat Logs Fully Exposed!]The post didn't just contain every single vile thing he had said in the private dining room. It also included concrete proof of him being played like an absolute idiot by Ruby."Sam, you're a seasoned attorney. Do you really think professional ethics and personal character are optional in our field? "A client called just minutes ago, demanding your removal from their case. They said they couldn't trust their legal matters to someon

That afternoon, I had just stepped out of Russell's law firm.As soon as I reached the street corner, a familiar figure lunged out from behind a flower bed and grabbed my arm."Penelope! I finally found you!"It was Bailey, sobbing hysterically.I didn't shove her away, nor did I scream. I simply stopped in my tracks, looking down at the hand clutching my sleeve. Her nails were still painted with the matching best-friend gel set we had gotten together—a soft, delicate shade of pink."Let go," I said calmly.Bailey froze for a second, clearly caught off guard by how composed I was. In her memory, whenever she cried, Penelope was always that flustered idiot who would scramble to hand her tissues and wipe away her tears.Still, she released her grip and frantically pulled a stack of crumpled paper out of her bag."Penelope, I know I was wrong! I really, truly know I was wrong!"She shoved the papers toward my hands with desperate urgency."Are you here to apologize?"I took the

The police moved even faster than I had anticipated. On the fifth day after the formal case was opened, Austin was taken into custody.Word was that he was in the middle of a gaming session, even boasting to his teammates over voice chat. "What is there to be afraid of? It's just a video. Is that little idiot Penelope actually going to send me to jail? I'm a tech guy, which means all the data's been completely wiped. Not even God could trace it back to me."However, when the officers pulled out the original raw data recovered directly from the cloud servers, he was speechless. The source files, draft renders, and chat logs with Ruby he thought were gone forever had all been recovered as hard evidence.Inside the interrogation room, Austin was still desperately trying to play it off."Officers, this was just a prank! We were just playing a harmless joke on her!"Besides, Penelope and I grew up together! How could I possibly try to hurt her? I did it to help her out! I wanted to

While I was busy preparing the litigation materials, news came from my family once again. However, it wasn't because they reached out to me directly. I simply happened to learn about it through the grapevine. That day, when I went to the courthouse filing room to submit supplementary materials, I ran into an old college classmate who worked in the government."Penelope? You... how have you been lately?" He asked, his eyes dodging my gaze slightly."Pretty good. What's up?""Well... word is that the background check for Allison’s promotion finally came through."My heart stirred, though I kept my face completely expressionless. "Oh? Is that so?""Yeah... rumor has it she didn't pass. They didn't explicitly state the exact reason, but word is that a family member is involved in a major online scandal and a pending criminal case. "Apparently, it's because the police opened a formal investigation into that video of yours. On top of that, your sister got dragged into a suspicious m

The next morning, I met with Russell Gilbert at his law firm, right as scheduled.Russell was an alumnus of my university and a prominent trial lawyer in the city. The second he saw me step into his office, he froze."Penelope, you..."My calm demeanor likely caught him off guard. I hardly looked like the pitiful victim who had just suffered relentless cyberbullying, abandonment by her family, and betrayal by her boyfriend."Mr. Gilbert, thank you for meeting with me."I took a seat, pulling out a flash drive along with a thick stack of printed chat logs from my bag."Here is all the evidence."Russell took the documents, turning through the pages as his brow creased deeper with every line."This Austin Walter… He's your childhood friend? And Bailey Somner is your best friend? As for this Ruby Price..." He paused, looking up at me with a complex expression. "Where does your boyfriend, Sam Marshall, fit into all of this?""He was the final straw," I replied plainly. "While he
