Nathan

After another day of clashing with my siblings over the billion dollar estate my parents left behind, I'm once again wishing there was a will. What hurts the most is they didn't know that was the fate they would meet that day.

Now that it's evening, here I am, on my way to see Miranda. She's the only one who makes me forget about all this misery around me.

I hope Layla signs the divorce papers soon. That way, I don't have to see her face when I get home. Even having breakfast with her is unbearable.

The sight of her only reminds me of the huge losses I suffered. Before my parents, it was our baby. I was so excited to be a father that I already had so much planned.

She lost the baby early in the second trimester due to a health condition but that didn't make it any easier.

Seeing her just reminds me of how unhappy I am with her now. In my life, she symbolizes loss and I don't want that. I already have enough to deal with.

Not only that, but Miranda, the girl I was so in love with during my college years, returned and now I just want to be with her. I don't even care whenever Layla sees us together. I've told her I'm not attracted to her anymore and I mean it.

When Layla initially had the miscarriage, Miranda was already back in my life and she was the one that I leaned on for support. It was then that I realized I still wanted to be with her.

And when I lost both my parents, she was once again there for me. Ever since then, I see no use of having Layla as my wife. My parents, who chose her for me, are no more. I should be free to live as I want and not be reminded of all that I've lost.

When the car pulls up to the hotel and I'm inside the suite, I find Miranda standing by the large window in a body-hugging dress. She has the perfect figure and I'm so attracted to her.

We make out for a while and then she pulls away, sitting in my lap.

"Did Layla finally say she'll sign the divorce papers? It's been a few weeks now." She trails her hand along my collarbone.

"Not yet, but I'll make sure she does. And guess what's going to happen after that?"

"What is it?"

"I'll make you my wife."

She screams with excitement as she swings her feet.

When I'm with Miranda, I'm happy and at peace but when I'm with Layla, it's depressing and I end up drinking more. I don't want that for myself.

If she still refuses to sign the papers, I'll have to do something more to make her leave.

~

The morning traffic's always testing my level of patience. I'm on my way back home as I need to grab some documents.

Just the thought of going there and seeing Layla is already so depressing.

Once I make it through the traffic and arrive home, I head straight to my bedroom and find the divorce papers on the bed.

Wondering why they're here, I check through them and my heart actually starts racing as I furrow my eyebrows. She's signed them?

Struggling to process what I'm feeling, I sit down on the bed with a heavy sigh.

I bring the papers up to my face again and her signature's right there.

I finally got what I wanted, to be free, so what's this uncomfortable feeling in my chest?

After a few minutes of silence, I nod to myself with a chuckle. I guess I'm just shocked that she's finally done it.

Though I’ve only come home to get some documents, I head over to her room so I can talk to her about leaving my house.

As soon as I step inside her bedroom, I narrow my eyes as I look at the table where she usually keeps her cosmetics. It's empty.

I even check the drawers and wardrobe. It's all empty and there's no sign of her suitcases.

Wondering what's going on, I rush back to my bedroom and reach for my phone to call her.

As her phone rings, I pace with a hand on my waist.

"Hello?" she says from the other end of the line.

"Where are you?"

"Did you see the signed divorce papers?" Unlike before, her tone is firm.

"Yes, but where are you? Your bedroom's empty."

"That doesn't matter. I gave you what you desperately wanted so this is it. If it's anything to do with the divorce, if I missed anything, give me a call. If not, don't call me."

"Layla-"

At the sound of a beep from her end, I look down at my phone screen in disbelief. She just hung up on me, something she's never done before ever since we met.

With a grunt, I throw my phone on the bed a little too hard. It almost slides all the way to the other side but stops right on the edge of the bed.

Now that I don't know where she is, my body temperature begins to rise. Even after I turn on the air conditioner and loosen my necktie and buttons, I still can't seem to calm down.

I ruffle my hair as I sit down on the bed, wondering what it is I'm supposed to do now. Layla signing the papers has left me confused.

When I remind myself that I came to look for certain documents, I go through my files and I'm a little rough with it. What's gotten into me?

Even after I find what I'm looking for, I still can't seem to calm down.

After she begged me for so long, she just woke up and decided to sign them? How's that possible?

I'm so curious about where she is that I end up calling her greedy mother. I barely talk to her but in this case, I have no choice. She's been constantly begging me not to divorce her daughter. I know it's only because of the luxuries she's had access to.

"Good morning, my son," she says from the other end of the line.

"Where's Layla?" My tone is urgent.

"She's not here. Isn't she with you?"

"No, she left after signing the divorce papers."

"What? She signed them?"

"Just tell me where she is." I shut my eyes, frustrated.

"I don't know, alright?" She raises her voice at me. "How could this happen? You two were supposed to work things out and-"

Clenching my jaw, I abruptly end the call and dial Pamela's number instead. She has to know where Layla is since they're best friends.

"Hello?" she says from the other end of the line.

"Is Layla with you?"

"What's wrong?"

"Just answer the question! Is she with you?"

"No, she's not. Please calm down and tell me what's-"

Once again, I abruptly end the call and this time, toss the phone on the bed.

I approach the large window and stretch my neck a few times to compose myself. Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath and exhale.

Why am I even doing all this? I should be happy and look forward to brighter days. In the end, nothing else matters. This is exactly what I wanted and I got it. Now I can finally make Miranda my wife.

However, no matter how hard I try, my curiosity gets the best of me even as I drive to the office. Where's Layla?

Layla Now that it's certain that I'm leaving the company, I'm already looking at options on where I can apply for my next job but at the same time, I still have the mansion that Louis gave to me. I just can't seem to decide when I'll put it on the market but before that happens, I plan to go there one of these weekends just to be alone and away from everything. It hasn't been too long since I came home and I rushed to freshen up and change my clothes so I can wait for him.Thirty minutes after I'm ready, he calls and my lips curve into a smile. "Hey, babe." "Hey, beautiful." "I'm ready now. I was thinking we could watch a movie." He sighs heavily from the other side. "I know I should be on my way to pick you up right now but something's come up and it's important, so I can't make it." I slouch with a pout in my seat. "I see." "I promise I'll make it up to you. This was just so short notice and it requires my attention because I'm the CEO. I feel awful." I smile. "Hey, you sho

LaylaTriggered by Nathan's tone of voice, I turn around, glaring at him. He scowls at me, but soon looks away while loosening his necktie.Just as I attempt to return to his desk, James chimes in with a forced chuckle. "Don't mind him. How about you enjoy the rest of your coffee break? It's almost time to get back to work anyway."I immediately realize what he's trying to do and still stop in my tracks to compose myself so I don't lash out. No matter how I feel, Nathan's not worth my time and I don't want to exchange words with him. But why is he so upset about this?Making my way along the hallways isn't any different from before as I still have people staring at me but now that I know the reason behind it, I don't feel so uneasy anymore.I get back to my seat and only a few seconds later, Mr Jones calls for me. Trish and Dave look at each other, then at me."What is it?" I ask both of them."Nothing," they respond in unison.I shrug, heading to Mr Jones office while ignoring all th

Nathan"No, I didn't tell her everything," I say to James, conflicted by that decision."You seriously didn't tell her?" He shakes his head and disapprovingly narrows his eyes."Back at the hotel, there was a moment when I spoke to Louis and I asked him if Layla knew. He didn't really give me a clear response. I figured it out on my own that she doesn't know."He sighs. "Then you should be the one to tell her.""No. She'll find out on her own.""What if it'll be too late by then? You're just going to let her find out the hard way?"I slam my fist on the desk. "Stop trying to make me feel awful." I look down at my watch with a heavy sigh. "We have about 10 minutes before this coffee break is over and this is the perfect time to speak to Layla.""You're going to tell her now? Are you crazy?" His eyes widen."What? No. I'm talking about what everyone knows here.""Right, I forgot about that for a moment." He nods. "Hey, are you sure this is the right time?""Yes. This is the perfect time

Nathan Ever since I took over Tech-Beet, I was certain that my past with Layla would never be discussed, so learning that everyone now knows makes me panic so much that I rise to my feet, looking at James with wide eyes. "How did they know about this and who the hell told them?" "That's what I've been trying to figure out myself for a long time!" He sighs. "Wait, how did you even know that they know about this?" "I heard it from one of the security guards." "What? Even the security guards know?" "Everyone does! He's like a friend now." "Let me get this straight. He just casually walked up to you and mentioned it to you?" "No, he asked me out of curiosity. It turns out that his cousin was one of the photographers from the event and that same photographer knows about you and Layla." "I see. So that's how it happened." I sigh heavily, feeling my heart race. "Now it makes sense why everyone was looking at me like that and I bet that everyone was looking at her the same way." "Ev

Nathan When I came back home yesterday, I drank some more whiskey as I couldn't stop thinking about Layla. Miranda only returned a few hours later and not once did she ask me why I was drinking again. It actually felt like she just doesn't doesn't give a fuck anymore. While I get ready for work, she's already awake, her back resting against the headboard while she types and scrolls on her phone. She scoffs so many times and sounds so bitter when she chuckles. I don't even want to ask what she's looking at. "What the hell is wrong with these people?" she finally says, looking in my direction. "What are you talking about?" I ask, watching her through the mirror as I reach for my necktie. "There's so much crap going on. Almost every gossip media site is talking about that bitch and her ugly dress from Saturday evening. Why is everyone sucking up to her? Is it because her boyfriend is Louis Lindgren?" "Is that why you're so upset?" "I'm visiting these sites to read some gossi

Layla My question makes me hold my breath when Louis pokes his cheek like I've just offended him or something. Did I go too far by asking him that question? The thought of it also makes my heart race a little. To my surprise, he gently places his hands on the sides of my face and plants a gentle kiss on my forehead, softly embracing me. "Babe, don't you see what Nathan is trying to do here? He hurt you and saw just how miserable you were when he left you. That's what he obviously expected to see even after the past few years. I'm the last person he would have thought would ever fall for you and yet here I am. He doesn't like that and he'll do anything to break us apart. But you know what? I'll never let that happen. You're mine and I want to cherish you forever." He plants more kisses on my forehead and I wrap my hands around his wrists, closing my eyes with a smile. "You're right about Nathan, that bastard." I firmly nod. "That's why you should never pay attention to what
