DANTE

The moment I heard the voice, I felt the hair at the back of my neck rising.

It came through the baby monitor in this strange, almost singsong tone. It was soft enough that for half a second I thought maybe it was static or even a dream. But then the words sank in.

“You never should have let me live, Flora.”

That was no dream. That was Dalia.

I didn’t even realize I’d clenched my hand into a fist around my phone until the screen cracked slightly. My chair screeched against the floor as I pushed it back and stood.

“Flora?” I said into the line. I could hear the urgency in my voice. “Talk to me. What did you just hear?”

On the other end, her breathing was labored and shaky. She sounded like she couldn’t decide whether to answer me or just scream.

“The monitor,” she whispered. “Dante… it’s Dalia… she’s…”

I didn’t wait to hear the rest. I was already moving. I grabbed my keys and gun off the counter. “Lock the doors. Stay put. I’m coming right now.”

The phone stayed pressed to my e

FLORAThe gun remained between us like a third person at the table.Dalia’s eyes never left mine as she brushed her fingers along the cold steel as if she was deciding whether to keep petting it or just pull the trigger.“You know what?” I started slowly. I tried to keep my voice steady even though my hands were already sweating. “You think you’ve been alone your whole life. That no one cared. And no one could understand you.”She raised her brows slightly, like she was curious about where I was going with this.“But you’re wrong,” I went on. “I do understand. I’ve lost people too. These were people I thought I’d have forever. People I thought I could protect. And when they were gone, it felt like all the air had been expelled out of my lungs and I couldn’t breathe anymore.”I saw a strange emotion flash in her eyes for a brief second before she snapped her mask back into place. Then I saw the tiny tremor in her hand. I knew she was listening and I was slowly getting to her so I had

FLORAI didn’t press the button for the penthouse right away. My hand hovered over it for a moment before I forced myself to push it. The doors slid shut, sealing me in.The elevator ride felt too quiet. The mirrored walls made me feel like I was watching myself walk into danger. The soft music playing overhead didn’t match the pounding in my chest. I adjusted my coat again, feeling the gun digging into my skin. There was no turning back now. When the elevator doors slid open and I stepped out, I felt like I was walking into another world. I’d seen quite a bit of luxury hotels, but I’d never seen one decorated as tastefully as this one.On the floors of the hallway was a deep red carpet with gold accents along the edges. The walls were decorated with large impressionist paintings, beautiful bright chandeliers hung from the ceiling and an elegant wallpaper covered the walls. There was only one door at the end, and I immediately knew it was the penthouse.I knocked once. It opened slowl

FLORAThe phone in my hand lit up with Dante’s name on the screen. My heart tensed up even more as I answered. When the video call connected, my breath caught in my throat instantly. The image on the screen wasn’t him, it was me.Me, in that hospital bed with hair plastered to my skin as my hands gripped the sheets tight as ever. My face was filled with the kind of pain I’d sworn I would never forget. And I hadn’t. Because it was the day I gave birth to my precious twins.“What is this?” My voice was trembling so badly that I could barely get the words out.Dante’s face appeared in the corner of the screen. His eyes were filled with so much emotion that I had to look away for a moment. “She had it playing in the orphanage. Over and over on a loop.”I swallowed hard. “That’s… that’s really sick.”“It’s Dalia.” His voice sounded quite normal, but underneath it, I could hear the same thing I felt: fear. Not for us, but for them. For our babies. The video was playing again. I couldn’t see

DANTEMarcus’s voice was still ringing in my ears when I slammed the car into gear. The steering wheel groaned under my grip. My pulse hammered in my throat. The safe house was behind me now, but I could still see the empty cribs as clear as day. My daughter was gone. My son was probably terrified somewhere, and the one woman who had caused us nothing but trouble and nightmares since she’d appeared in our lives had slipped through my fingers again. We didn’t waste any time. Marcus had traced the faint signal from the hacked baby monitor; the one Dalia had taunted Flora through. We’d tracked it to a location deep in the old industrial district, a place where even gangs didn’t hang out anymore. When the GPS chimed that we’d arrived at our destination, a couple of words flashed up on the screen: St. Agnes Orphanage.I kept wondering why she had led us here, but I couldn’t get to the bottom of it. It seemed it had some sort of significance to Dalia, probably her childhood home or somethi

SOFIAI didn’t trust him. Not even a little.Lorenzo was sitting in the back seat now, with his arms crossed over his chest like he had nothing to prove. The sound of the tires on the road was the only sound between us for the first thirty minutes of the drive. We were headed toward Georgia, but I didn’t let myself forget that the man sitting at the back of the car had once been Dalia’s puppet.“Are you going to keep staring at me like that?” he finally asked, not even looking my way.“Like what?” I kept my voice cold, and my eyes fixed on the long stretch of road ahead.“Like you’re trying to figure out the fastest way to kill me.”I didn’t blink as I said, “That’s because I am.”His lips twitched into what might have been a smirk if there was any real humor behind it. “I told you, Sofia. I’m done with her. Dalia’s grip on me is gone. I’m not doing her bidding anymore. I want to help Dante and be his brother like I once was.”“People like Dalia don’t let go, Lorenzo,” I said. “If sh
