Clara’s POV

It was five in the evening. Lydia should be arriving any moment now.

The implantation had been done a week ago and it was successful. Damon’s and my child had now begun developing in Lydia. I was relieved it worked because there had been cases of failed fertilization, and I had desperately hoped this wouldn’t be one of them. We didn’t even have time for multiple attempts.

The doorbell rang.

I hurried down the stairs and reached the entrance. Lydia stood outside with a warm, charmin

Leonard’s POVI hadn’t slept. I hadn’t eaten either, not since I was thrown in here. The tray of food given to me sat across the cell, cold and untouched. I sat on the edge of the cot, staring at the same patch of gray wall I’d been staring at for what felt like days, though I couldn’t be sure how much time had actually passed.I kept seeing it. The gun. The look on his face right before I pulled the trigger. The way his body had gone still, so fast, so final.I thought about Clara too, more than I wanted to admit. About the weeks I’d lost hiding in the shadows while Damon built a life on the wreckage of what should have been mine. About love that never got the chance to become anything real.A guard’s voice cut through the silence.“Adams. You have a visitor.”I looked up slowly, my eyes hollow, my body too tired to feel much of anything.“Who?”“A woman. Says her name is Clara.”My heart stopped for a beat.Clara.They cuffed my hands in front of me and led me down the long h

Leonard’s POVThe chessboard sat between us on the low table, the pieces worn smooth from years of use.I moved my queen, sliding her diagonally across the board without hurry, my eyes fixed on the pattern taking shape in front of me.Across from me was a hooker. She had come up with idea of playing chess after alarming my bed. I agreed since I was bored. Since studied the board, her brow furrowed in concentration. After a moment, she reached out and moved her rook.A mistake. An obvious one.“You left your king exposed,” I said, not bothering to look up.She glanced at the board again, startled, her hand hovering uselessly over the pieces now that the damage was already done.I smiled, slow and unhurried, and moved my knight into position.“When you’re fighting,” I said, “you eliminate your opponent completely before entertaining distractions.”I slid my piece the last space forward.“Checkmate.”She let out a breath and leaned back against the couch. “You always win.”“That’s bec

Damon’s POVI hit the top of the stairs and shoved Rachel’s door open without knocking. She was standing by the window, phone in her hand, and she spun around fast, startled, her eyes going wide when she saw my face.“The documents were fake.” My voice came out low, shaking with something I couldn’t fully control. “Someone swapped them.”“What? That’s impossible. I didn’t—”“You were the only one who knew the code to the safe.” I crossed the room in three strides, my finger pointed at her chest. “I used your name, Rachel. Your name!”“I didn’t take them.” Her voice cracked, desperate. “I swear it, Damon. I’ve been loyal to you from the beginning.”I studied her face, searching for the lie I was so sure had to be sitting there somewhere. Her eyes were wet, her hands trembling slightly at her sides. If she had taken them, she wouldn’t still be here. She would have run the second she had them.“If not you, then who?”“I don’t know.” Her voice broke. “But I’m telling you the truth.”I ope

Damon’s POVI poured two glasses of champagne, the bubbles catching the low light of Rachel’s room, and handed one to her with a grin I couldn’t have wiped off my face even if I’d tried.“I told you it would be easy.” I clinked my glass against hers. “She’s out of the way for now. All I have to do is stamp the documents tomorrow, and everything becomes official.”“And then?”“Then I make sure she stays there for at least a week.” I took a slow sip, savoring it. “By the time she gets out, I’d have sold the house and we’d be in France. Chilling on a beach. With the kids.”“And Clara?”“She’ll have nothing.” I said it plainly, without a shred of guilt. “No house. No money. No children.”I leaned in and kissed her deeply, my hand cupping her jaw, feeling the warmth of her skin against my palm.“This is everything I’ve been waiting for.”We toasted again, the bubbles fizzing up between us, and for a moment I let myself believe the hardest part was already behind me.A soft knock interrupte

Clara’s POVThe doorbell rang while I was folding laundry in the living room, and I set the basket down and went to answer it without a second thought. Two women stood on the porch, one in a sharp gray suit, the other holding a clipboard against her chest like a shield.“Mrs. Clara Hayes?”“Yes?”“We’re from the NGO.” Her voice was flat, professional.“We’ve received a complaint regarding your behavior and your fitness as a parent.”My blood went cold instantly.“A complaint? From whom?”“We can’t disclose that to you.” “That’s a lie—”“We have documentation.” She cut me off smoothly, without raising her voice. “Multiple incidents. The café. The cake. The public outburst at your son’s school. And most recently, a physical assault on your husband.”“I didn’t—”“We also have a letter from your therapist, Dr. Ellis, stating you attended only three sessions and stopped coming.”“She was lying to me!” My voice cracked upward. “She was working with my husband!”“Ma’am, we’re not here to

Damon’s POVMy phone buzzed against the passenger seat as I merged onto the highway, and I glanced at the screen before answering, keeping my eyes mostly on the road.“Boss, the flight is booked. Wednesday. First class. Two tickets.”“Good.” I allowed myself a small, private smile. “After I stamp the documents in court, they’ll be official. By the time Clara realizes what’s happening, I’ll be long gone.”“And the kids?”“They’ll be with me.” My jaw tightened at the thought of leaving them behind with her. “I’m not leaving them with her.”“Understood.”“Get the boys ready.” I flicked on my blinker, changing lanes. “I’m coming to the hideout.”I ended the call and let the smile settle fully across my face.Wednesday. Two more days. Then I’m free. The hideout sat exactly where it always did, far away from buildings and people. I walked in to find three of my men waiting, none of them meeting my eyes the way they usually did.I looked around the room.“Where’s Michael?”One of them shr

Clara’s POVThe elevator dinged, opening to the hallway that led to my hotel room.“I love the way you handled everything, Clara,” Desmond said as we stepped out and made our way down the corridor.I paused, resting a hand on his shoulder. “It wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thank you.”“

Damon’s POVMy lips curled into a wide smile. This was exactly what I wanted—her being caught in her own game. But the satisfaction was short-lived as the initial expression vanished completely from her face, replaced by one I couldn’t quite grasp. She sighed softly. “Is that all you’ve got to tell

Clara’s POVMy heart skipped a beat, the air suddenly too heavy to inhale. Looking at the diamond ring, it was beautiful— sparkling under the soft glow of the car’s interior light. Leonard was a good man; I just couldn’t imagine us that way. “Leo…” I whispered, my voice barely steady. This couldn
