Burning Empire

Chapter 1

Matteo’s heart hammered like a drum as he slipped through the crowded streets, clutching the small leather pouch tight beneath his coat. The city buzzed all around him — neon signs flickering, voices shouting, music pounding from nearby bars. But Matteo barely heard it. All he could focus on was the pounding in his chest and the sharp, cold weight in his pocket.

This was it. His first real score.

He hadn’t planned for his hands to shake or his breath to catch. But the adrenaline was a wild thing — a fierce, hungry beast that screamed at him to run faster, stay hidden, don’t get caught. He ducked behind a parked car and pressed himself against the cold metal, trying to calm down. Every noise felt amplified—the screech of tires, the shout of a street vendor, a distant siren wailing through the night.

Matteo glanced down at the pouch again. Inside were the keys—small, simple, but powerful. Keys to cars, apartments, safe houses. Things that meant money, safety, a way out. He wasn’t sure if he’d stolen from the right people, but it was all he had.

“First time doing something this big,” he whispered to himself, voice barely audible. “Don’t screw it up.”

His fingers twitched. Every second felt like a countdown. If anyone caught him with this, it wouldn’t just be trouble—it could be the end.

He moved again, slipping through the crowd like a ghost. The street lights flickered, casting long shadows that seemed to chase him. People brushed past, their faces blurred in the neon haze. Matteo’s world had always been about running, hiding, and scraping by. No more.

Suddenly, a voice called out behind him.

“Hey! Stop!”

Matteo froze. Panic twisted his stomach. Without thinking, he bolted down a side alley, heart racing as the footsteps thundered closer. He slammed into a chain-link fence, then squeezed through a gap, breaking into a full sprint.

The alley was narrow, walls closing in like a trap. He dodged piles of trash and broken glass, every sharp sound making his skin crawl. The city was alive with danger, and he was right in its teeth.

“Come back here!” the voice shouted again, louder this time.

Matteo’s lungs burned. He risked a glance back—two men in dark coats were chasing him, faces set hard with anger. He didn’t know who they were, but he knew exactly what they wanted.

The stolen pouch felt heavier with every step, like a weight pulling him down. He wanted to drop it, run empty-handed, but he couldn’t. Not after everything.

A sharp corner loomed ahead. Without slowing, Matteo made a split-second decision and darted down another alley, hoping to lose them in the maze of streets. His breath came in short gasps, his legs trembling but pushing harder.

Then, just when he thought he might escape, the alley ended at a dead end.

Matteo skidded to a stop, pressed against the cold brick wall. He was trapped.

The footsteps were close now. Too close.

He swallowed hard, heart thundering in his ears.

And then the voices came—harsh, cold, filled with menace.

“You think you can steal from us and get away?”

Matteo’s hands clenched into fists, the leather pouch still secure under his coat.

This was just the beginning. And whatever happened next, he knew one thing for sure—

He wasn’t going down without a fight.

---

Matteo’s eyes darted around the dead-end alley, searching for any way out. But all he saw was cold brick walls and rusted fire escapes that were too high to reach. His breath came fast and shallow. The leather pouch felt like a stone in his pocket, heavy with everything he didn’t yet understand.

The two men in dark coats stepped into the alley, their faces shadowed but their eyes sharp and unforgiving.

“Hand it over,” the taller one demanded, voice low but deadly serious.

Matteo swallowed hard. “Look, I don’t want trouble. Just let me go.”

The other man laughed, but it was no joke. “You don’t get to ask. You took something that doesn’t belong to you.”

Matteo’s mind raced. He needed a plan, something fast. But all he could think of was running. Maybe if he could just slip past them, disappear into the maze of streets.

He stepped to the side, looking for a gap.

The taller man moved with surprising speed, blocking the way.

“No way out,” he said.

Matteo’s chest tightened. The city had never felt this small and suffocating. Every shadow seemed alive, waiting to swallow him whole.

Suddenly, a soft metallic click came from Matteo’s pocket—the pouch shifting as he fidgeted nervously.

The shorter man’s eyes flicked down. “What’s that you got there?”

Matteo clenched his fist around the pouch. “if you know, why ask?” he scoffed.

The taller man stepped closer, reaching for the pouch. “Hand it over. Now.”

Matteo’s instincts screamed at him to fight or run. But with no clear escape, fight was all he had.

He took a quick step back and shoved the taller man hard in the chest.

Surprise flashed in the man’s eyes for a moment before he lunged forward.

Matteo dodged, then sprinted toward the alley’s entrance.

“After him!” the shorter man shouted.

Footsteps thundered behind him again. Matteo pushed harder, every muscle burning.

He turned a corner, hoping to lose them in the night.

As he ran down, the alley, he came across a tinted car and without thinking, he opened the car and jumped in shutting it....

but, he wasn't alone...

    ~~~~~~~~~A Month Later~~~~~~ The sound of laughter filled the air. “Leo! Give it back!” Derek shouted as he ran across the yard, trying to catch up with him. “No way!” Leo laughed, holding the ball tightly as he ran faster. “You said if I get it, it’s mine!” “I didn’t mean forever!” Derek replied, breathing a little harder but still smiling. The afternoon sun shone brightly over the mansion grounds. The grass was green, the air was fresh, and everything felt calm. Leo suddenly stopped and turned, throwing the ball toward Derek. Derek caught it easily this time. “Got it!” he said proudly. Leo placed his hands on his waist. “That doesn’t count. I let you catch it.” Derek raised an eyebrow. “Oh really?” “Yes.” “You’re a bad liar.” Leo gasped dramatically. “I am not!” Derek laughed. “You are.” Not far from them, Dominic and Matteo sat quietly, watching the boys. Matteo leaned back slightly in his chair, a soft smile on his face. “They’ve been like this every d
    It had been two weeks. Two long weeks of white walls, quiet machines, soft footsteps, and careful voices. At first, the doctor had said Derek would only need to stay for one week. His recovery was going well, and everything seemed stable. But things had not gone exactly as planned. A few days after the surgery, Derek had developed a sudden fever. It wasn’t too high, but it worried the doctors. They said it could be a minor infection caused by the injury or the surgery. They had to run more tests, keep him under observation, and adjust his medication. Then, there were the headaches. Sometimes, Derek would press his hand against his head and close his eyes tightly. The pain would come and go, but the doctors didn’t want to take any chances. They said head injuries were delicate. Even if he looked fine on the outside, they had to be sure everything inside was healing properly. And there were moments when Derek would feel dizzy when he tried to stand or walk. Matteo had to hold hi
    ~~~~~~~~~Next Morning~~~~~~~~ Dominic woke up when he felt a soft touch in his hair. His eyes fluttered open slowly, adjusting to the dim light of the morning. He turned toward the source, and his eyes widened in disbelief. Derek was awake. “Oh my… you’re awake! Are you alright? Are you okay?” Dominic asked, his voice a mix of relief and worry as he quickly rose from the bed and reached toward Derek’s face, gently brushing his hair away from his forehead. Derek’s eyes, still a little foggy, met Dominic’s. And then, in a small, trembling voice, he spoke. “Big brother.” Dominic froze. He could hardly believe his ears. Derek called him “big brother”? He hadn’t heard those words in so long. it felt like a lifetime ago. Could it be that Derek’s memory had returned? “You… Do you remember?” Dominic asked, his voice barely a whisper, full of hope. Derek blinked, confusion lingering in his gaze. “I… I don’t understand.” Dominic swallowed hard. “What… what is your name?” he aske

    “Ahhhhhhh!” Leo screamed, his small voice shattering the laughter and chatter that had filled the park just moments before. Dominic and Matteo, who had been teasing each other gently, became alert as their heads snapped toward the source of the scream. Matteo’s eyes widened as he saw Derek—or Jonah, as he now insisted on being called—lying on the ground. Blood was already seeping from a deep wound on his head, spreading quickly down his face. Fear struck Matteo like a physical blow, and he ran forward without thinking. “Derek!! Oh my!” Matteo gasped, kneeling beside him and pressing a hand to the bleeding wound, trying to slow it. His hands were trembling. “Stay with me, Derek, stay with me!” Dominic barked orders sharply. “Get the car ready! Now!” His voice was calm but edged with urgency. The guards, who had been casually monitoring the children, moved immediately, carrying supplies and preparing the vehicle for a rapid trip to the hospital. Matteo’s mind raced. “How… how did t

    ~~~~~~One Week Later~~~~ Derek was still in his room, sitting on the edge of his bed with his knees pulled close. His eyes stared at the floor, and he didn’t even flinch when Matteo knocked softly on the door. Matteo and Dominic exchanged worried glances outside the room. “We can’t just leave him in there all day,” Matteo whispered, lowering his voice so Derek wouldn’t hear. Dominic sighed. “I know. But we need a plan. Sitting here worrying isn’t helping anyone. Maybe… maybe we take him out. Get some fresh air. A change of scene might help.” Matteo tilted his head, thinking. “You mean… like take him and Leo somewhere? Maybe the park?” Dominic’s lips curved into a small smile. “Exactly. He likes being outside, right? And Leo… well, Leo can be good company. Something simple, fun. No pressure.” Matteo nodded slowly. “Alright. Let’s do it. But we need to approach him carefully. No rushing. We let him feel he’s choosing, not being forced.” Dominic grinned. “That’s why you’re smart,
    The next morning, sunlight crept through the thin curtains, painting stripes across Jonah’s bed. He blinked against the warmth, hugging the blanket closer. Outside, the house stirred softly as the clatter of dishes from the kitchen, Matteo’s low hum as he moved about and his faint laughter. Jonah stayed still, listening. Part of him wanted to pull the covers over his head and disappear. Part of him wondered if Leo would come back today. He shook his head at the thought. Why would he? Jonah had made it clear: no friends, no company, no nonsense. Still, a small part of him, one he didn’t like to admit, felt a little empty. The door to his room creaked lightly. Jonah turned towards it and saw Leo standing at the door with a solemn expression. “Hey,” Leo whispered, holding something behind his back. Jonah narrowed his eyes. “What do you want?” His voice was flat, but quieter than yesterday. Leo stepped in cautiously, holding a small paper airplane in his palm. “I… made this fo
