Caleb's POV
“My baby!” Pearl yelled as she snaked her arms around me just the moment I stride in.
For a moment, I thought my eyes were deceiving me as confusion and disbelief swirled in me. “Yes! How dare you cheap slut! Are you stalking me now!”
I stomped nearer to her as her lips remained partly open, with her jaw dropped in awe. “Oh my bad, you didn't expect to see me here, huh?”
“A gold digger, scheming bitch! You thought you could just escape from your rightful place! The prison is your home and has no hiding place!”
For a split second, dread flashed on Lyra's face as my breath fanned her skin. “You're here to replace the previous janitor right?” I whispered into her ears.
Her brows rose, and she gave me a mischievous look. “Get your filthy hands off me!” she yelled as she raised those deep blue eyes of hers.
“How dare you, Caleb!” She exclaimed.
“The prison is my home no matter what? Do you even have a heart?” She added as emotions clouded her previously angered voice.
“Have you ever loved me even for a second, Caleb?”
Her question hung in the air as I raised a haughty brow at her, and the deafening silence in the hall suffocated me.
Then she took a few steps towards me with no kindness in her eyes. “We shall see whose rightful place is it soonest?!” her eyes dilated and her jaws clenched.
“You coward!”
Each word she spilt out of her mouth felt like a sharp blade cutting through my confidence.
“Wait a minute! What the heck is happening?” Pearl finally got out of her shell as confusion etched her face and her brows knitted together.
“Come on, baby! She's…”
“Your ex-wife! No, no, no!” She interrupted me before I could say another word.
My lips remained pursed as I let out a low growl from all possible thoughts that crossed my mind. Does Pearl, by any chance, know Lyra? No way!
“Lyra?” She added, with her jaw still dropping.
Pearl's teeth clenched angrily around her words as her brows furrowed.
“You don't need to think deeply about whether to hire her or not because of me baby. She doesn't deserve it,” I tried to assure her as my arms buckled around her waist.
“What!” Pearl’s voice echoed in the hall.
“We're officially divorced; that's why I proposed, so we can finally be together just like our son wants.”
I pulled Pearl's chin up as her facial muscles tightened. Her whisper in my head told me there was something she was hiding from me.
Out of mind, I didn't know the minute a hot slap landed on my face. “You don't have a heart, Caleb!” Lyra's voice cracked as a single teardrop fell on her face.
She parted her lips to say another word but went mute again. I didn't know how tears flowed down her face like a broken river bank.
I tried to go close to her as I felt the heavy beating of her heart. “You and your wicked family murdered my babies! And now you already have a child with another woman!”
“Babies?!” I laughed as I spoke.
“Those bastards? Do you even know their father?”
“And you see her. She's Pearl Jenkins, the CEO of the Jenkins Group. The company you want help from.”
“Why the hell am I talking about a job to you? Such a useless entity like you can't afford to even work here as a janitor.”
“So…because you…,” she paused.
“Caleb! Is this the reason why you have tormented me all these years?! This?!”
For a moment, there was silence in the room. “Relax baby, call the security to throw this mad lady from here! She's only causing a nuisance,” I suggested as my phone buzzed loudly with a message.
I raised a dangerous brow at Lyra and her hands clenched into her fist.
“You will pay for this, Caleb Sawyer!”
“Pay?” I ignored the message and strolled towards her.
“Who are you? You're nothing! And you know me better, Lyra. I don't have interest in empty and baseless threats.”
“You can't do anything! Read my lips!”
“She's someone who's going to be your worst nightmare, Caleb Sawyer!” A voice echoed from nowhere and rang in our ears with no traces of warmth in it.
At that moment, I gasped in disbelief as I remained utterly shocked and our entire attention on the door.
However, Lyra's muscles seemed relaxed as her face brightened more.
The next scene I saw was someone I never expected to set eyes on at that moment, and my blood instantly dried up. And I could feel chills going down my spine.
“What! Oh my goodness! This is what you think is going to spank me? Huh?”
“Mr Cromwell!” Pearl's mouth agape.
“Lyra, is he the father of those bastards?” I threw numerous questions at the same time as I couldn't describe what I was feeling at that point but it was as if I didn't exist to her.
“Hey!” I added as I was about to touch her.
“If you touch her hair as much, you will leave to regret it!” Gary, the CEO of the Cromwell group threatened me.
All of a sudden, my fingers went numb as a sense of adrenaline washed over me. “Wow! That's it, Lyra! You have been sleeping with him behind my back, right?”
“Bear this in mind, don't come back begging if he finally dumps you. Because he has a fiancée, and he will never leave you for her.”
“Go to hell, Caleb!” She exclaimed, and her lips curved into a wicked, amused smile.
This is not the Lyra I've always known all these years. My mind spiralled around as she romantically sounded to me previously. All the years we have been together, she has lived to please me, and now this! Something is definitely wrong. How did she finally agree to sign the damn papers so easily?
“You will pay for everything you did to me! The pain, torture, betrayal and every bit of it! Trust me and do not forget your mistress, lover boy!” she murmured in my ears, her voice vibrating like a deafening siren.
I didn't know how my voice died and I felt a sense of dread rolling in the pit of my stomach.
Without hesitation, out of mind as her breath fanned my skin, I didn't know how my lips crashed against her, and I savoured the sweetness of it.
I felt the tension in the hall as it erupted in the entire hall and the gazes suffocated us. “What a fuck! Let go of me!”
Lyra's POV “You should be thanking your stars that I added ‘Miss’ to your fucking name because you don't even deserve it!”Then I eyed her up and down covetously. “Ooh! What were you thinking? You think you have had your way; come on, wake up, Selina and stop dreaming!”I drew back my head from her and I broke into a great peal of laughter that echoed in the entire corridor.Gary might have waited for me all this while and tired by now but I have to put this useless woman in her place before anything else.“I…how dare you Lyra?! What the hell are you even talking about? You know absolutely nothing about that the crap you're spilling and I'm not in for your silly games here!” Her voice cracked, and the guilt in her eyes were so evident that even the blink could notice. As her voice faded, I brought my hand up to stifle the giggle that had risen in my throat, but I felt it was impossible, and I broke into another loud laugh.I folded my arms and my eyes swept over her just staring at h
Lyra's POV “What!” I screamed, and my ears were as though I was just dreaming about his words as they seemed too scary to be true.“I understand that look, and it's hard to even believe it, and as it stands now, even though I need a presenter, he doesn't know I'm out of prison and doesn't watch the news. That's one thing about him that I'm so much aware of,” he managed to say and I still stared at him wordless. Then I tiptoed back to my seat and my eyes couldn't leave his face. It was as though I was anxiously searching his face to figure out his thoughts, which was obviously impossible. The moment I landed on my chair, he reached for my hand and murmured some words on his lips as we stared at each other without a word for a while.“I understand how badly you feel and so shattered down to earth. How the people you love most turn out to be more than enemies, and the only thing they can think of as a payment for your sacrifices towards them is pain, hurt and betrayal!”“It's so heartbr
Lyra's POV My eyes widened in astonishment, and I was amazed at the thrill his words gave me. I raised my eyelids, and my eyes met his glaring ones as the shock ran through me.“Yeah, I know you're confused, Lyra, but I'm the same person you knew back in the prison house,” he spoke as he nodded his head.“Really?!” I covered my mouth as I was barely able to control my grasp of surprise. As I voiced that, he nodded his head and stretched his hand towards my tensed ones, which were lying on my desk.“I don't know my real name, and I guess that caused the confusion, right? You don't have to worry about anything, Lyra, I'm with you on this mission, and there's nothing for you to be bothered about,” he revealed.“I know it has been hard for you all this while, and take my word if I tell you that you will get the justice you deserve,” he continued, and my eyes swept all over him.I cleared his throat, and he loosened his tie a bit as I relaxed on the swivel chair. “A lot is going through y
Lyra's POV I pulled the phone from my ears instantly and my eyes widened in astonishment. I stood there, blank and shaken.I parted my lips, but my voice broke miserably, and I was too surprised to accept his handshake. His hand remained in the air as he searched anxiously on my face as though he was trying to read what I had in mind.Is he really Tate Shark? Or am I hallucinating?I surveyed his face and the same fragments of images clouded my mind. There's nothing that seems to make me doubt what's going on in my mind.“You…you are? Tate Shark?” My voice cracked and I released my handbag to Sandra.“He was here for a while now ma'am,” she said as she stretched her hand for the bag.He nodded eagerly with a brief smile on his lips. “Yeah Miss Jenkins, it's a pleasure to be here,” his husky voice made my body tremble all of a sudden.I only stared speechless, as though I was deaf or dumb, and I couldn't help but wonder how this man who was released from prison was a news presenter.W
Lyra's POV Her eyes moved upwards to stare at my glaring ones and she surveyed me keenly. They were a pool of pity in them but behind that, the only thing I perceived was that evil old lady who stood against me in court years ago without a fucking care about anything.“I want to make it right now and stand by you through everything. I…,” she paused and stole a look at my red face.“I know I disappointed you Lyra. But I want to be the shoulder that you would lean on now on your hard days and the one that you will rejoice with on your happy days. I…,” she muttered under her breath and her voice was broken all of a sudden.I pulled the handbag from her cursed hands and my eyes flickered over her. “It's good you know that you disappointed me, and for your information, Mrs Jenkins. I don't know, you don't even deserve to be referred to as that.”“Guess what? It's too late for that now. A shoulder for me to lean on? Really?” I stood still as I tried to fight back the tears that had threate
Lyra's POV “You…but Marc,” she stammered and her eyes frantically went back and forth on us.“Yeah, I didn't tell her about it because I wanted to surprise the both of you,” Marc replied eagerly and upon all indications, they had been in touch with each other.“Miss Jenkins, I thought it wise to schedule a meeting with you and grandma. Since you returned you have not asked about her and know why. But…”I dropped my handbag on the couch near her and I interrupted him vehemently. “Who the hell gave you that advice? Wait…oh God!” My voice cracked and I ran my hand through my long hair.“What even makes you think that I want to see this? This one? She's not my grandma anymore and will never be!” My voice was almost cold.I swallowed the lump that rose in my throat, and I stared at them with my eyes full of fury while she lowered her gaze to the floor. She picked up her support crutch, and tried to sit upright. I couldn't imagine that just in less than five years of being away she's now t
