Lyra's POV
Instantly, my stomach dropped, and my body went rigid hearing those words. My mind was crying a warning as Pearl's rude words still rang in my ears like a deafening siren.
Could it be that his grandma was informed about our relationship? Then it's no other person than that bitch!
“You will meet my grandma, today,” he revealed suddenly as his knuckles moved fast on the wheels without a care in the world about anything.
A hint of surprise mingled with my blatant excitement. And his facial muscles seemed relaxed, and it seemed like nothing had happened. Probably, I was overthinking Pearl's words and truly, nothing was wrong.
He cleared his throat and it seems my silence is suffocating him. “It's okay if you're not ready to meet her now. I understand…”
“Not…not that. I mean, I'm ready to meet her,” I managed to respond, my voice stuttering all of a sudden.
Then a a gaze of excitement flashed over his face. Even though I still feel all wasn't well.
A moment later, we arrived at the auction and I swallowed as I gazed at the priceless decoration of the hall.
As we got down from the car, he reached out and took me by hand gently. At first, the gazes of people at an event suffocated me, If I walked side by side with Caleb.
But now, I couldn't describe how I felt in words, but there's a glimmer of excitement embedded in me, which is out of this world. I feel so safer than ever.
The moment we strolled in, the murmurs from every nook and cranny of the hall were eating me up. I had always expected that. I mean, the Cromwells are the richest family in Los Angeles.
Not just that, Gary is the hottest and also the richest bachelor – he's every woman's dream man. How do I expect people to react to seeing us together?
“This exquisite silver and blue sequin evening dress is only two-made edition in the entire world,” a shocking murmur hit me like a blow.
I looked at myself once again as if I hadn't checked my reflection earlier. This evening dress is the only two-made edition in the whole world? What!
“It's worth billions of dollars. I think Mr Cromwell has cancelled his engagement with the King's Group daughter since it's a business marriage,” another murmur followed.
Billions of dollars?! How will he spend such a ridiculous amount on a dress for me? I mean…
“She looks more gorgeous than Fredina – The Gooma’s daughter,” the murmurs continued.
My stomach dropped into the pit of my stomach and my heart was like a hammer in my chest. I was completely stunned and gaping at the crowd.
For a second, Pearl's words began to make sense. Even if I didn't believe her earlier, I'm beginning to.
We got to our seats, and Gary went behind to pull the chair for me. I didn't know where this pretty lady appeared from but the only thing I saw was a full glass of wine about to spill on me.
Instantly, Gary gently pulled me to the other side, and the entire wine spilt on his expensive, tailored suit.
What!
Just that second, an old lady almost in her seventies came from nowhere and landed a hot slap on her face.
And my heart instantly skipped rapidly and I felt a clutch of panic in the pit of my stomach. For a moment, I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me.
“You bitch! How dare you! Homewrecker like you!” The lady yelled all of a sudden with so much anger in her.
“I'm so sorry, Gary,” I said as I tried to clean the mess on his suit.
“Don't bother. It's not your fault,” he assured me. Meanwhile, he had a spare suit in the car and it was brought for him to change.
“Yes Lyra, it's not your fault but this!” The old lady added as she took a few steps towards me.
My brows furrowed and my mouth remained wide open. For a second, I thought it was all over for me, but it seems it's indeed the beginning.
The old lady got near to me, about to say a word. Out of mind, my gaze fell on Pearl, her mother and that shithead; Caleb. Obviously, they have witnessed the entire scene.
They stomped towards us as the old lady held my hands. “So this is really who you're Lyra?” Caleb burst out angrily.
“You think sleeping with another woman's man will spank me at all? Come on, wake up from that slumber,” he added.
I looked at them and felt like they didn't deserve any explanation whatsoever from me. “How dare you speak to her like that!” The old lady got more agitated.
“Grandma, don't bother about this,” Gary finally spoke after a while.
“You will live to regret this! Trust me! This useless bitch is the reason you haven't been giving me any attention right? The Cromwell group will go down soon!” the lady threatened and stomped out with her bodyguards behind her.
“Do you believe me now? That he will definitely dump you. He can't watch his company suffer, you know,” Pearl teased.
I gave a brief laugh, “We're here to bid right? Let's get to it!”
Gary drew me close, his breath fanning me. “This is my grandma, and it was unfortunate she got the wrong information. That's why she showed up here. Let me order one of the guards to send her home so I will arrange a proper meeting for you later.”
Well, my entire muscles relaxed a bit. “My dear I hope you will join us for dinner tomorrow?” Gary's grandma asked.
I nodded quickly. “I can't wait to meet you again,” she added and gave me a hug.
I gaped at them as they disappeared through the door.
“Oh, has your tongue suddenly been caught? He's gone!” Pearl tried to mock me.
Caleb shamelessly drew near me and raised my chin. “He is using you! Trust me!”
“Get your filthy hands off me! Be a man! Let's bid!” I exclaimed and crawled to my seat.
Lyra's POV “You should be thanking your stars that I added ‘Miss’ to your fucking name because you don't even deserve it!”Then I eyed her up and down covetously. “Ooh! What were you thinking? You think you have had your way; come on, wake up, Selina and stop dreaming!”I drew back my head from her and I broke into a great peal of laughter that echoed in the entire corridor.Gary might have waited for me all this while and tired by now but I have to put this useless woman in her place before anything else.“I…how dare you Lyra?! What the hell are you even talking about? You know absolutely nothing about that the crap you're spilling and I'm not in for your silly games here!” Her voice cracked, and the guilt in her eyes were so evident that even the blink could notice. As her voice faded, I brought my hand up to stifle the giggle that had risen in my throat, but I felt it was impossible, and I broke into another loud laugh.I folded my arms and my eyes swept over her just staring at h
Lyra's POV “What!” I screamed, and my ears were as though I was just dreaming about his words as they seemed too scary to be true.“I understand that look, and it's hard to even believe it, and as it stands now, even though I need a presenter, he doesn't know I'm out of prison and doesn't watch the news. That's one thing about him that I'm so much aware of,” he managed to say and I still stared at him wordless. Then I tiptoed back to my seat and my eyes couldn't leave his face. It was as though I was anxiously searching his face to figure out his thoughts, which was obviously impossible. The moment I landed on my chair, he reached for my hand and murmured some words on his lips as we stared at each other without a word for a while.“I understand how badly you feel and so shattered down to earth. How the people you love most turn out to be more than enemies, and the only thing they can think of as a payment for your sacrifices towards them is pain, hurt and betrayal!”“It's so heartbr
Lyra's POV My eyes widened in astonishment, and I was amazed at the thrill his words gave me. I raised my eyelids, and my eyes met his glaring ones as the shock ran through me.“Yeah, I know you're confused, Lyra, but I'm the same person you knew back in the prison house,” he spoke as he nodded his head.“Really?!” I covered my mouth as I was barely able to control my grasp of surprise. As I voiced that, he nodded his head and stretched his hand towards my tensed ones, which were lying on my desk.“I don't know my real name, and I guess that caused the confusion, right? You don't have to worry about anything, Lyra, I'm with you on this mission, and there's nothing for you to be bothered about,” he revealed.“I know it has been hard for you all this while, and take my word if I tell you that you will get the justice you deserve,” he continued, and my eyes swept all over him.I cleared his throat, and he loosened his tie a bit as I relaxed on the swivel chair. “A lot is going through y
Lyra's POV I pulled the phone from my ears instantly and my eyes widened in astonishment. I stood there, blank and shaken.I parted my lips, but my voice broke miserably, and I was too surprised to accept his handshake. His hand remained in the air as he searched anxiously on my face as though he was trying to read what I had in mind.Is he really Tate Shark? Or am I hallucinating?I surveyed his face and the same fragments of images clouded my mind. There's nothing that seems to make me doubt what's going on in my mind.“You…you are? Tate Shark?” My voice cracked and I released my handbag to Sandra.“He was here for a while now ma'am,” she said as she stretched her hand for the bag.He nodded eagerly with a brief smile on his lips. “Yeah Miss Jenkins, it's a pleasure to be here,” his husky voice made my body tremble all of a sudden.I only stared speechless, as though I was deaf or dumb, and I couldn't help but wonder how this man who was released from prison was a news presenter.W
Lyra's POV Her eyes moved upwards to stare at my glaring ones and she surveyed me keenly. They were a pool of pity in them but behind that, the only thing I perceived was that evil old lady who stood against me in court years ago without a fucking care about anything.“I want to make it right now and stand by you through everything. I…,” she paused and stole a look at my red face.“I know I disappointed you Lyra. But I want to be the shoulder that you would lean on now on your hard days and the one that you will rejoice with on your happy days. I…,” she muttered under her breath and her voice was broken all of a sudden.I pulled the handbag from her cursed hands and my eyes flickered over her. “It's good you know that you disappointed me, and for your information, Mrs Jenkins. I don't know, you don't even deserve to be referred to as that.”“Guess what? It's too late for that now. A shoulder for me to lean on? Really?” I stood still as I tried to fight back the tears that had threate
Lyra's POV “You…but Marc,” she stammered and her eyes frantically went back and forth on us.“Yeah, I didn't tell her about it because I wanted to surprise the both of you,” Marc replied eagerly and upon all indications, they had been in touch with each other.“Miss Jenkins, I thought it wise to schedule a meeting with you and grandma. Since you returned you have not asked about her and know why. But…”I dropped my handbag on the couch near her and I interrupted him vehemently. “Who the hell gave you that advice? Wait…oh God!” My voice cracked and I ran my hand through my long hair.“What even makes you think that I want to see this? This one? She's not my grandma anymore and will never be!” My voice was almost cold.I swallowed the lump that rose in my throat, and I stared at them with my eyes full of fury while she lowered her gaze to the floor. She picked up her support crutch, and tried to sit upright. I couldn't imagine that just in less than five years of being away she's now t
