"Elara."

His voice was a blade.

She set down her bowl. Wrote: I'm fine.

"You left the fortress."

It whispered to her in the quiet moments, tempting her with power, with freedom, with release. The training began at dawn.Seraphina stood in the garden, her silver eyes closed, her hands at her sides. The sun was rising, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of dew and earth. The moonflowers were still closed, their petals waiting for the night. She reached inside herself, into the hollow place where the shadow lived. It stirred at her touch, cold and ancient, patient and waiting.I am ready, she thought. Teach me.The shadow responded. It flowed through her, cold and powerful, filling every corner of her being. She gasped as the darkness wrapped around her, not painful, not hostile, but overwhelming. It was like being submerged in a cold river, the current pulling her under.Do not fight it, the shadow said. Accept it. Welcome it. Become one with it.She took a breath. She let go of her fear. She accepted the darkness. The cold receded. The shadow settled into her, warm and alive, part of her.She opened her eyes. The worl

Not until the night the shadow spoke to her.---It happened during a storm. The wind howled outside the fortress, rattling the windows and shaking the walls.
