Chapter 2

Author: Cat Treats
I picked it up and took a look. It was an organ donation consent form. Even though my mother-in-law wasn’t my biological mother, my expression turned cold.

“Mom was religious. Didn’t you know that? She believed in being returned to earth. I won’t agree to the donation.”

Suddenly, Laura burst out laughing.

“Oh, wow. It’s the twenty-first century. How can someone remain so superstitious? If you ask me, your mom must have done many terrible things in her life. That’s why she died from cancer. Otherwise, why would she be the one to get cancer while everyone else is fine?”

Anthony chuckled and chimed in without the slightest trace of guilt. “Felix, why don’t you let your mom do one last good deed while she’s still useful? Maybe that way she’ll go to heaven. It’s the same principle as slaughtering a pig. Right after it dies, everything’s the freshest. If you wait too long, it’ll be too late.”

The dead deserved respect. Even if the person lying there wasn’t his own mother, how could a doctor say something like that?

With anger boiling inside me, I finally snapped and shouted, “Isn’t she your mother? Where is your conscience? I will never agree to the donation!”

I turned and started walking toward the door, but someone grabbed me. Laura’s fingernails dug deeply into my flesh.

She raised her other hand as she threatened, “You ungrateful piece of trash. I tried talking to you nicely, but you wouldn’t listen, huh?”

I fixed my sharp gaze on her.

“Laura, don’t you dare lay a hand on me. If my parents find out, they won’t let you get away with it!”

Before I could say anything else, Laura slapped me hard across the face. My cheek instantly burned with pain.

“So what if you were born into a good family? You’re always using your parents to pressure me. Do you really think I’m a pushover?”

She grabbed my hand, forced me to sign the donation form, and shoved me aside. I stared at her in disbelief. In the past, she wouldn’t even raise her voice at me, and now she could actually hit me?

Anthony hurried over and grabbed Laura’s hand.

“Ms. Laurie, don’t be angry. You’ll hurt your hand!”

Laura immediately suppressed the fury on her face, afraid of frightening her precious apprentice.

“It’s fine, it’s fine. Getting angry over trash like him isn’t worth it. Come on, let’s go handle the body.”

Anthony’s eyes suddenly lit up as if he’d thought of something.

“Ms. Laurie, don’t you have another surgery scheduled? Did you forget? Why don’t you get some rest first? Leave the body to me. I’ll show you how much I’ve learned!”

After Laura left, Anthony casually pulled away the white cloth covering the body and picked up a cranial saw, slicing open my mother-in-law’s skull.

He clicked his tongue in disgust. “Her brain had shrunk. It can’t even be used as a specimen.”

Following that, he dug out her eyeballs.

“An old lady with failing eyesight? Her corneas are also useless.”

In an instant, her head became unrecognizable. Then, he began cutting open her chest and abdomen. My mother-in-law’s organs were pulled out and tossed around carelessly. As he worked, he even took photos and sent them to Laura.

Laura’s voice message soon came through, filled with praise.

“Good job, Anthony! You’re not afraid at all. For your first time handling a body, you’ve got to be bold. Anyway, there’s nothing useful left on Felix’s mom’s body. This is the perfect chance for you to practice. At least her death won’t be completely meaningless!”

I couldn’t help covering my mouth as nausea surged up.

Anthony looked at me with a cheerful smile.

“Your mom is just too old. There’s nothing on her body worth reusing. Felix, I have to take things out first to see if they’re useful. It’s all part of the process. Don’t take it personally.”

I took a long, deep breath. Of course, I didn’t take it personally. Even Laura, her own daughter, was cheering him on. Why should I, an outsider, care?

However, now that I had seen Laura’s true colors, there was no way I could keep up the act and continue living with her. Who knew when she might turn around and hurt my parents, too?

I grabbed Anthony’s phone and spoke into it, “Laura, we’re getting a divorce.”

  • Call It Murder!   Chapter 9

Laura’s crimes were quickly uncovered.During surgery, she had deliberately neglected her duties. Knowing full well that Anthony was unqualified, she insisted on placing him on the operating table. She treated human life as a joke, and in the end, the patient died on the table. She was also implicated in multiple other charges, including kidnapping, illegal drug administration, and intentional bodily harm. The police submitted a full set of evidence to the prosecutor’s office, and the prosecution immediately filed charges, requesting cumulative sentencing for all offenses. At the same time, Anthony’s background was exposed. In fact, he didn’t even have a medical background; he wasn’t a medical graduate at all. He had only studied management abroad for a few years, and after returning home, he was forcibly inserted into the hospital as an intern, purely through Laura’s connections.Online, in the media, and even within the hospital, everyone was talking about it.“The hospital’s h

Police immediately rushed forward and restrained Laura.“What about my mom?”The doctor quickly began checking on my mom.“She’s fine. She was only given a sedative. She’ll wake up once the drug wears off.”Only then did I finally breathe out in relief. My entire body went numb, and I collapsed onto the floor. Laura, on the other hand, was pinned down and struggling violently.“Felix! You lied to me! You never planned to start over with me! You promised that you’d provide me with an affidavit of non-prosecution! You even smiled at me!” she screamed, her voice hoarse. “You’re just toying with me!”Something inside me snapped. I forced myself up and rushed over, slapping her hard across the face.“Laura, you’re nothing but a monster! If you hadn’t held a knife to my mom’s neck, do you think I would’ve written that?”The moment the slap landed, Laura froze. The cheek swelled quickly.Tears streamed down her face as she screamed, “I’ve apologized! I said I love you! Why can’t you

My heartbeat raced, and the worst possible thought flashed through my mind. What was Laura planning to do by kidnapping my mother?Unlike her hysterical voice over the phone, the moment she saw me, her eyes reddened.“Felix, why haven’t you called me even once in the last few days? You have no idea… how much I missed you…”If not for the surgical blade pressed against my unconscious mother’s neck, her words might have sounded almost affectionate. In just a few days, Laura’s dark circles were deeply sunken and almost frightening to look at. It seemed the investigation into the surgery had taken a toll on her.I raised my voice, trying to stay calm. “Laura, whatever it is, we can talk it through. Just let my mom go first!”However, as if she hadn’t heard me at all, she continued speaking to herself, “Now I finally see that you’re the only one who’s ever been good to me. Anthony, that b*st*rd, dumped everything on me the moment something went wrong! The patient died in his hands! Le

Laura’s vision went black, and she nearly lost her footing. She suddenly jumped to her feet and rushed at Anthony, grabbing him by the throat.“It was you!”Anthony struggled, his eyes rolling back as he gasped, “Ms. Laurie, I… I had no idea who your mother was. You said the patient was Felix’s mother, so of course I believed what you told me… You can’t blame me for that…”What Anthony said was technically the truth, but Laura had completely lost her mind. She roared at him in fury, “It’s all your fault! You damaged my mom’s body, so I couldn’t even recognize her! I didn’t even get to see her one last time! You even ruined my mom’s funeral! I can’t even gather all of her ashes now, and this is all because of you!!”Under her tightened grip, Anthony’s lips were already turning purple.Amid the chaos, someone called the police. The officers arrived quickly and forced the two apart. Laura collapsed to her knees on the ground, her face twisted with rage.“I’d like to file a report!

Laura stared at my parents in a daze as his eyes widened. “Your mom… your mom is alive? How is that possible?”I smiled faintly.“Thanks for the concern. My mom is doing just fine.”Laura struggled as she asked, “Then who… died?”I bent down and picked up the lid of the urn that had been kicked away earlier. Then, I held it out in front of her. On the front of the lid were two small, almost unnoticeable words engraved into the surface—Suzie Johnson.Laura staggered, nearly losing her balance. Anthony stepped forward, completely unconcerned.“Felix, no matter how sad you are, you can’t just get someone to pretend to be your mom and attend your mom’s funeral. Isn’t that a bit ridiculous–”Before he could finish his sentence, he met Laura’s eyes, which were filled with shock and despair. Suddenly, Laura shoved Anthony aside. She rushed a few steps toward the damaged memorial photo and name on the placard, which had been ruined beyond recognition. Using her sleeve, she frantical

Even if the deceased wasn’t my own relative, the dead should be treated with dignity. Whoever it was, they didn’t deserve to be humiliated like this.I stared straight at Laura, my voice trembling as I suppressed my anger. “How are you… laughing?”Laura looked completely calm. She even chuckled as she replied, “This is supposed to be a celebration of life. Do we really need a bunch of people crying their eyes out for it to count as respect? Besides, your mom loved lively gatherings when she was alive. I’m just respecting her wishes.”“A celebration of life?” I stepped closer and questioned, “This is a funeral. It’s a place for people to mourn, yet you turned it into this mess. You even defaced the memorial portrait so badly that no one can recognize who the deceased is anymore… and you call that respect?”My voice kept rising until I was almost shouting. “You’re not comforting the dead. You’re insulting them!”Anthony was stunned for a moment after being scolded, but soon enough,
