Chapter 4: an alpha’s claim

.

Jessica sputtered, flushing as her mind thought back to the handsome Alpha. She tried to erase that image from her thoughts. “I’ve barely met anyone.”

“Well, hurry up and meet them! Although, I’d say stay away from the group over there – they’re weird – and that one leaning against the wall ‘cause he’s way too ignorant for you,” Tasha said, pointing not so subtly.

Jessica had to slap her hand before any of them actually caught her obviously indicating and saying something unpleasant about them.

“Oh, and he is definitely not your - stop hitting my hand!”

“Stop pointing!”

“Then how are you going to know who I’m talking about?”

“Just like use your eyes or head or something.”

“But there are so many you could misunderstand.”

“It doesn’t matter because I…” Jessica trailed off as her wolf instincts jolted.

That fragrance from earlier was back.

As she had suspected, the other Alpha came into view and… Jessica swallowed.

He was drenched in water like he’d gone swimming in the lake or something (a thought of bewilderment briefly crossed her mind, though she paid it little attention).

The Alpha’s hair was pushed back from his forehead and droplets of water decorated his face, his chiselled jawline, his pale pink lips. His black shirt was half undone and his boots were in one hand, still dry.

Nearby Omegas and Betas had stopped to stare at him, oozing of charisma and mysterious charm and yet still radiating that ‘stay away from me’ vibe.

Tasha’s attention snapped from the Alpha to Jessica a few times before her face lit up and Jessica could almost see the lightbulb going off above her head. She clapped her hands together and proceeded to laugh her ass off, disturbing the silence.

Everyone turned to look at her, the Alpha included. Unfortunately, attention on Tasha meant attention on Jessica and she most surely did not want that.

“Tasha, could you not?”. Jessica hissed in a whisper as her cheeks began to burn, red most certainly spreading down her face. She began to panic because Natasha, being Natasha, occasionally

blurted out inappropriate comments at inappropriate times.

Tasha opened her mouth, preparing to say something at Jessica’s expense she’s sure, when a shadow was casted over them. Her mouth sealed shut. The Alpha stood in front of them, expressionless as ever.

His piercing eyes were trained on Tasha in a way that was almost… threatening?

Jessica curled her hand around Tasha protectively, who quietened down at the presence of the Alpha. Said Alpha followed the movement intently.

Jessica tried not to stare at the Alpha’s exposed collarbones and she struggled to keep her own face neutral, constantly being teased by the alluring scent of the wolf.

With the hand not holding his boots, the Alpha suddenly clasped Jessica’s chin; her wolf gave a surprise cry. The movement was fast and sharp, Jessica herself barely registered it.

Watching Betas and Omegas around her gasped quietly but the collective sound made it ripple through the air.

The area had gone dead silent.

The Alpha’s grip was firm but by no means painful; Jessica could easily break out of his hold if she tried, unfortunately her mind was frazzled and her brain and muscles weren’t coordinating.

The Alpha’s hand was warm and the longer it stayed on her skin, the more scorching it became.

Jessica’s heart was thrumming in her chest and her breath had caught in her throat. Up close, this Alpha looked young, and perhaps if he wasn’t looking so intimidating, he’d be cute.

“What’s your name?” He asked, seemingly unsettled by all the attention on him. His voice was deep and smooth. It sounded perfect to Jessica, and her wolf raised her ears to try hear more.

“Jessica,” Jessica replied quietly.

When the Alpha continued to look at her expectantly, she further added, “Jessica Hart.”

“Hmm,” The Alpha hummed like he was considering it, scanning the features on Jessica’s face.

Jessica was about to ask for his name in return when the other’s thumb brushed Jessica’s lips, an act that had Jessica’s blood racing faster, before he released his hold.

It left a sensation that was domineering and territorial.

The Alpha stepped back, earnest stare burning into Jessica who felt like her whole body had stopped functioning.

The Alpha gave a slight glare of irritation at the other wolves who dropped their heads, shocked by the scene.

“Yves,” He spoke and the scowling Beta from earlier stood up lazily, not daunted at all by the taller male.

They both walked away from the fire.

Neither looked back.

Jessica was too stunned and dazed to be embarrassed. She knew other wolves were still watching her, trying to figure out why that just occurred, and to an ordinary looking Omega like Jessica nonetheless.

Tasha giggled, eyes turning into crescents. “Jessica. He claimed you.”

“H-He did not,” Jessica started.

“Yes, yes he did. He didn’t mark you, but he like, scent-claimed you in front of – of everyone!” Tasha said with glee, forgetting about how bitterly that wolf had stared down at her a few seconds before.

She leaned forward and then drew back with a shit-eating grin. “He left his scent on you.”

When another wolf showed an act of dominance like that in front of other wolves, it was like a warning: stay away – she’s mine.

It wasn’t an act of power towards Jessica, it was targeted to other wolves.

Jessica gulped.

Was that true? Did this Alpha plan to take Jessica as his mate? Her Omega wolf howled with contentment, but the other part of her was repulsed by the idea.

This Alpha was aloof and cold, and from the way he carried himself he was proud and haughty.

Jessica huffed, how he dared to even think he could just act so possessively, like she was some object he could just claim without even a proper conversation.

“Why do you look so angry?” Tasha questioned.

“Why wouldn’t I be?.” Jessica pressed her lips together. “That’s why I don’t want an Alpha mate. They’re so… so… egotistic and self-righteous. What makes him think that I even want to be his mate? Huh? He didn’t even know my name and all he’s done is stare at me like I’m some sort of conquest or challenge. He didn’t even tell me his name!”.

Tasha hit her shoulder, snorting. “Calm down, will you? You haven’t even given him a chance. Besides, I know you find him h-o-t. Your eyes went all hazy and you blushed.”

“That is not the point,” Jessica scowled. “I am washing this off this instance.”

“It will take at least a day to get an Alpha’s scent off,” Tasha stated matter of fact.

“I’ll make it come off,” Jessica hissed adamantly.

She said as she stood up, feeling flustered when an angry growl interrupted her and Jessica turned around to see the alpha who claimed her with an angry expression on his face.
