CHAPTER 073: UNDER A HAIL OF BULLETS

Kade shoved me flatter against the stone path, one arm braced beside my shoulder, the other wrapped around my waist.

His chest pressed against my back. I could feel his heartbeat through his shirt, fast and hard, while the garden erupted around us.

Lots of stone chips struck my cheek.

I flinched, trying to turn my face away, but Kade’s hand closed over the back of my head and held it against the ground.

“Stay down, Covey.”

A bullet struck the stone somewhere behind us. The sharp crack was

  • Claimed by the wrong leister brother   CHAPTER 085: THEN HE WALKED IN

LUCA'S POV"Morning, Mr. Leister. I'm Nurse Abby. And I brought you some breakfast."The tray landed on the table with a soft plastic clatter before I even looked up. Eggs. Toast cut neatly in half. Bacon. Fruit chopped into identical little cubes. A paper cup of coffee sent a thin ribbon of steam toward my face. And a napkin folded into a fucking triangle.I stared at it.A triangle. Was I some six years old recovering from chicken pox? Instead of twenty-something, six-foot-whatever, and lying in a hospital bed because somebody had put a bullet through my leg.My stomach rolled over on itself. “I'm not hungry."She gave me the kind of smile I’d been seeing since yesterday.Soft around the edges. Almost Careful. The smile people wore when they were afraid that saying the wrong thing might make you break.I hated that smile."That's okay. You should still try to eat something.""I said I'm not hungry."She wheeled the little table closer anyway. The wheels squeaked against the floor,

The sentence landed harder than an open hand across my face.I shook my head. "No. You wouldn’t do that.”"Yes.""Stop.""You and I both know Kade had nothing to do with Finn's death."My stomach dropped out from under me entirely."Stop it!”"You knew that.""Nicholas!”"You fucking knew it." His voice tore through the room, finally breaking all the way open. "And it was easier for you to let me believe he was responsible, because you were so desperate to keep Luca blameless, that you let your other son carry a weight that was never his to carry."I couldn't move. My fingers had gone completely numb around the fabric of the chair. The years rushed back uninvited — Kade standing in that doorway, fifteen years old, the exact second Nicholas told him he was leaving. The way he'd looked at me across that hall. Not angry. Just confused. That open confusion of a child looking at his mother the way children look at mothers when they still believe, absolutely, that she can fix whatever's bro

  • Claimed by the wrong leister brother   CHAPTER 083: THE SECRETS HE KNEW

CATHERINE'S POVThe first thing I heard was Nicholas telling someone to keep looking."Thank you. I appreciate your help."I stopped just outside the living room doorway, one hand still resting flat against the wall. It’s been two days. Two days since the garden filled with gunfire, since Luca was rushed to the hospital, and since Nicholas stood in our kitchen doorway and heard the one sentence I’d spent twelve years making absolutely certain he’d never hear.I curled my fingers against the plaster, pressing them into the paint until my knuckles went white.Inside, Nicholas kept talking."No. I don't want assumptions. I want facts."I stepped into the doorway. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, one hand tucked into his trouser pocket, phone pressed to his ear. His jacket hung over the back of a chair, sleeves rolled neat to his forearms, posture perfectly straight.Nothing about him looked like a man whose marriage had collapsed. His eyes found mine across the room and stayed

My hand tightened around the glass until the cut crystal bit into my palm. "Those sons of bitches tried to kill everyone," Atlas scoffed. “Turned the whole wedding into a bloodbath. Honestly, your brother's probably having a worse day than you are right now. Having his knee busted open like that.” "This isn’t about him.” Muscles worked in my jaw. “They were there for me. I’m sure.” He didn't argue that part. Couldn't actually. We'd all seen it — the direction, the timing, the exact second it happened, right after I'd walked away from Luca, right as I'd been standing in the open with Noah in front of me. Someone had known where I'd be. Someone had been confident enough to open fire at a wedding full of witnesses. That kind of confidence only came from one place. Casper pushed off the wall. "Want me to start making calls?" "Not yet." His brows drew together. "First," I said, "I want to know exactly who was stupid enough to think I wouldn't find them." Atlas fol

KADE'S POV"Hold still, you fucking idiot." Atlas’s voice echoed with frustration."I am holding still.”"You're moving.""Because you're digging a needle into my side like you're trying to sew a fucking button onto a T-shirt."He didn't look up. The needle dipped again, caught skin, and pulled through."Maybe if you stopped bitching, I'd actually finish."I looked down at the thread disappearing into my ribs, dark and wet against pale skin already blooming yellow-purple at the edges. The thread pulled tight. A sharp white-hot sting shot up through my ribs and straight into my jaw.I didn't make a sound.Atlas exhaled hard through his nose. The specific sound he made when he was pissed and working in total silence, each stitch deliberately a half-second slower than it needed to be, just enough to remind me he could make this hurt more if he wanted to.The needle dragged through the torn edge again. He'd already gone through the deeper section once last night. What I'd assumed was a

  • Claimed by the wrong leister brother   CHAPTER 080: STARTING OVER II

AUTHOR’S NOTE: You can listen to “Car’s outside” by James Arthur for this chapter. Every plan I'd ever drawn up for my own life had somehow had his shadow standing somewhere inside it. His university, his hockey schedule, his apartment fifteen minutes from mine, his games I never missed. Even when I thought I was building a career entirely for myself, I was building it within driving distance of him. "I kept telling myself I wasn't ready." Her eyes narrowed slightly. "And now?" I looked at the application glowing on the screen. "Now I'm just tired of waiting around to be ready." Her smile widened. "Thank heavens, I’m finally getting the Noah I’m used to back.” A faint chuckle escaped my throat. Then she asked the question neither of us had touched yet, the one sitting under everything else since I'd walked through her front door the day before. "Are you sure you can really let Luca go?” My smile faded instantly, and my gaze dropped to the floor. "I don't know."
