“More wine?” the waiter asked.

I nodded. I needed to clear my head and getting drunk seemed like the best option.

Nate and I were sitting in the corner of a fancy restaurant that definitely cost him a lot. It was our anniversary. I got him vinyl discs of some of his favorite albums. I could have done more, but I had to admit that I was more distracted than normal.

I was with Zac the previous day. The doctor expressed his displeasure at Zac leaving the hospital without his knowledge. Thankfully, he was going to be alright, he needed a lot of rest. Zac didn’t let me go anywhere by myself. Even when I went to use the bathroom, a security guard stood a few feet from the door.

Now, at the restaurant. An armed security guard sat a few tables from us, protecting us. I haven’t met Olivia’s father, but I have heard the worst things about him. He owned the city, he could do whatever he liked without any repercussions. I had already caused mama and papa a lot of stress. I didn’t know the le

Zac and I were seated at the entrance of a local diner. We were the only ones at the moment. I couldn’t imagine someone like Zac frequenting a place like this. It seemed too common for someone of his status. “I can’t believe this is your favorite place to eat,” I commented as I looked around the diner. “Why?” “I expected a fancy restaurant with a pianist or waiters dressed in suits,” I answered. After my horrible dinner with Nate, Zac offered to take me to his favorite spot because I was hungry. “I’ve been coming here since I was ten. It’s hidden, they don’t have as many customers but I can tell you that their food is good and the owner is now an old friend of mine.”It was nice to see a different side of Zac. When he wasn’t playing the role of a villain, he was actually sweet, and I wanted to hang around with him more often. “You should try the cheeseburger and the French fries; they have the best,” he said as I went through the menu. “The best cheeseburger is sold a

Zac placed his jacket on my shoulders as he led me to his car. It was really chilly outside and the silky dress I wore wasn’t offering me any comfort.I knew Zac was the last person I should be with right now, but it felt like I was about to lose my mind. If I had gone back to the table, I would have probably caused a scene. How could they believe I was pregnant for Zac? Just like the last time, Nate didn’t defend me. “I’m sorry for bringing you here,” I apologized to Zac once we were in the car.It was probably selfish of me to do so because he was still admitted at the hospital. When I called him, I could barely speak because I was crying. I asked him if he could come get me and in less than ten minutes, he arrived. “You’re going to get a cold,” he said. “Vincent, turn on the heater.”Soon, warm air filled the car, but my hands were still shaking. Nate was blowing up my phone, but I turned it off. It was rude to walk out on my in-laws and I knew I was definitely going to get a

“Why did you leave the hospital?”Nate had left a while ago after kissing me in front of Zac and threatening to kill him if a strand of hair on my body was missing. “Would you rather Olivia and her father ruin you and your boyfriend’s lives?” he snapped. “What is wrong with you?” I yelled. “You’re acting like this is all my fault! I can’t keep living like this.” “I told you to give me some time. I’m going to clear this up,” he retorted. With Zac, I was always shouting or on my toes. With Nathan, it was different. The few hours I spent away from Zac were peaceful, but I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Out of self-respect, I didn’t call him or send a text. What was I going to say? He asked me to leave his hospital. Oftentimes, I find myself doing so much for him, things he’d never appreciate.“How long?” I yelled. “It’s been over a month. I’m going to be a wife soon. This whole thing has taken a toll on our relationship.” He snorted. “That’s all you talk about, your boyfriend.

There was nothing more annoying and humiliating than being stuck in the middle of two angry men. Zac came with just one car. He asked me to come with him while Nate drove alone. Nate wasn’t having it. The two spent about three minutes arguing. It was exhausting. Both men who I thought were mature and had common sense acted like kids now. After going back and forth for about six minutes, they agreed to sit with me in the back seat while one of the security officers drove Nate’s car behind us.I could feel Zac’s eyes on my ring. He made no effort to hide his displeasure. Nate instinctively took my hand and stroked it. “That’s a beautiful ring darling, I’m so glad you like it. I can’t wait for us to have beautiful kids.”Zac scoffed mockingly and I rolled my eyes. “What’s the matter with you?” “Me?” He laughed. “Shouldn’t you focus on your fiancé ?” “She’s focused on me!” Nate snapped. “We did a lot of focusing last night if you’d like to know.”Zac’s smile faded. My cheeks flushe

I woke up with a start. The sheets were different from the feathery ones in Zac’s house. There was no chef at my door with so many options for breakfast. I almost panicked when I realized Nate wasn’t in bed with me.Had he left me again? “Nate?” I called outI hadn’t realized how much him leaving me at the wedding had deeply scarred me. What if he had a change of mind? “Nate?” I called out again, louder, and headed out of the room.No response.I could almost feel my lungs collapsing again, just like before I was alone, with no one to stand by me.I walked out of the room, afraid of what I'd find. Maybe a handwritten note, telling me that getting back together was a bad decision, or maybe he believed Zac’s lies, or he listened to what people had to say. My heart couldn’t take his second betrayal. My chest tightened as I stepped into the living room. I froze. Nate was there, he didn’t leave me as I had thought. He was kneeling on one knee in front of a floral arch with marquee lig
