Chapter 2

작가: Heroic Thief
Vincent only noticed the gift box in my hands after I spoke. A flicker of relief crossed his eyes, but it vanished when Christine broke the silence.

"Since it's such a rare coincidence for all of us to be in the same place, why don't we have a meal together?" she suggested.

I was about to decline, but then I saw the longing in Lorelei's eyes. In the end, I agreed. It had been a long time since Vincent and Lorelei shared a meal.

Once we were at the restaurant, Vincent ordered several dishes. I couldn't help but ask him to add a serving of cheese-baked broccoli.

"Why are you so demanding?" Vincent said, clearly annoyed. "I've already ordered about eight dishes. Why do you want another one?"

"Everything you ordered is either seafood or spicy," I explained. "Lorelei is allergic to seafood and can't eat spicy food."

Vincent was momentarily stunned by my words.

Sitting beside me, Lorelei murmured, "It's okay, Daddy. I can eat the omelet."

"At least you're mature enough to know how to conduct yourself," Vincent huffily replied.

His eyes were filled with disdain as he looked at me, but when Christine served him the food, only adoration shone in his gaze. The two of them were in their own bubble, chatting and laughing.

Anyone unfamiliar with our situation would have assumed Vincent and Christine were husband and wife.

"Charlie, have more shrimp. It's high in calcium."

As Vincent peeled shrimp for Charlie, Lorelei watched enviously. My heart sank, and I quickly served Lorelei some omelet.

Suddenly, Charlie threw his spoon into the soup pot and shrieked, "Who said you could eat the omelet? I want to be the first one to eat it! Stop touching my omelet! You're ruining it!"

I hastily pulled Lorelei close. Hot soup had splashed onto the back of her hand, and the skin was rapidly turning an angry red.

Vincent said unhappily, "This is on you. Why would you scramble with a kid for food when you're an adult?"

I couldn't hold back my anger any longer. "Are you blind?" I yelled. "Lorelei can only eat the omelet out of all the dishes on the table. Why does she have to go along with everything you want? You're her father, for crying out loud!"

"She's so scary!" Charlie wailed. "I don't want to eat with her anymore! I don't wanna eat with her anymore!"

As Charlie threw his temper tantrum, he began to grab fistfuls of food from the table and hurl them at us. A few seconds later, he overturned the entire pot of soup.

I grabbed Lorelei and tried to move her out of harm's way, but I was too late. The soup drenched her skirt, and the skin on her legs was already turning red.

"Look at what you've done!" Vincent hollered at me. He then turned to Charlie and murmured, "Don't cry, Charlie. I'll bring you to get dessert later. We can order more food and don't have to eat with them, okay?"

A smile broke across Charlie's face upon hearing Vincent's words. He shot a gleeful glance in Lorelei's direction before sticking his tongue out at us. He then grabbed Vincent's hand and tugged him along, leaving us behind.

When Vincent turned to look at me, his eyes were filled with loathing. Meanwhile, Christine stood to the side and pretended to be the good guy in the entire fiasco. "I'm so sorry. We spoiled Charlie too much. Are you alright?"

"Why wouldn't they be alright?" Vincent shot back before I could open my mouth. "Even if you're bored, you shouldn't take Lorelei out just to feel important. Remember your place!"

I took a deep breath before leaving, taking Lorelei to see a doctor.

When we arrived at the hospital, the doctor frowned deeply when he examined Lorelei's injuries. "The burns are quite serious. How could you be so careless?"

I didn't say a word, but Lorelei exclaimed with bloodshot eyes, "It's not Mommy's fault! She didn't do this! I can endure the pain!"

Tears welled up in Lorelei's eyes, but she refused to let them fall even when the doctor applied ointment to the burns. I hugged her tightly and only breathed a sigh of relief when the doctor finished treating her wounds.

On the way home, I asked, "Lorelei, if there comes a day when I leave your father…"

Before I could finish my sentence, Lorelei grabbed my hand tightly. "I'm willing to leave with you, Mommy!"

"You don't want Daddy?"

"He doesn't like me anyway." Lorelei hung her head and fisted her hands into the hem of her skirt. A long moment passed before she mumbled with reddened eyes. "He has another child whom he likes better."

Lorelei was even more intelligent than I expected, which put my heart at ease.It had been a month since I returned to Camdonia. Vincent finally couldn't hold himself back any longer and stormed into my office. His sharp, bloodshot eyes pinned me down with their gaze. My assistant gasped in panic. "Ms. Atkinson, I'm sorry!"I waved him off and told him to return to his post before gesturing for Vincent to sit. I poured him a cup of tea and said calmly, "If you have something to say, please go ahead."He lifted his head. Desperation was written all over his face."Can you help me, please?"I couldn't hold back a laugh as I looked at him."Vincent, do you still remember what you used to tell me whenever I asked for help at the Porter residence?"His lips trembled. He clearly remembered."You'd say, 'Grace, why are you so useless? You're nothing but a worthless piece of trash. We let you into our family because we approved of you. You only married me because you make a decent tr

Regret filled my heart when I noticed how mature Lorelei was behaving. Why had I allowed them to meet? It wasn't as if I had forgotten how Vincent had treated her in the past.It had taken Lorelei a long time to let go of him. For an eight-year-old, it was far too cruel to make her face him again."There's no need for that. This won't happen again," I said.Vincent froze for a moment, surprised by my words. "Grace, we're divorced, but Lorelei is still my daughter. You can't stop me from seeing her!""You didn't look for her for three years! We were living abroad, not on another planet!" I snapped. "Vincent, don't think I don't see through you. You're trying to use my technology to save your company, aren't you?"Unfortunately for you, that's impossible. Whichever company I decide to partner with, it will never be Porter Corporation."I took Lorelei's hand and left the restaurant without looking back. Vincent ran after us, shouting, "Grace! I admit everything was my fault, but you

  • Coming Second to That Woman   Chapter 7

After returning to Camdonia, I met up with a few friends. It was only then that I found out that Vincent hadn't ended up with Christine after our divorce. The Porters had refused to let a mistress take over as lady of the house. It would have damaged their reputation, and by extension, their business. After all, the Porters had been thrust into the spotlight once news of Vincent's infidelity broke. Everyone had an opinion, but they were all convinced that Vincent had indeed cheated on me. His clumsy attempts to manipulate public perception only field the heated discussions online. As a result, the public openly boycotted Porter Corporation, causing its stock value to plummet. Many of their products were returned, with angry customers demanding refunds.Vincent was eventually forced to issue a public apology. He spent a fortune on PR firms to repair his image, and it took a long time before things settled. But even then, it was impossible for him to make a full comeback.AI tech

Vincent didn't have time to question me any further. His phone was blowing up with calls from Camdonia's media. He needed to return to the country as soon as possible to do damage control, so he had no other choice but to sign the divorce agreement. After asking for leave, I went back home with him to file the divorce. Before I left, he gritted his teeth and warned, "You better stay away from Camdonia for the rest of your life. The moment you set foot here again, I'll make your life a living hell!"I smiled at him, silently telling him he was welcome to try. I was certain that the next time we met, we'd be in entirely different leagues.Vincent left in fury. I let out a long sigh of relief. I was finally free. From now on, I could truly live my life and raise Lorelei the way I wanted.Joshua's team was fully dedicated to advancing AI technology. After I joined, our efforts doubled as we pushed for a breakthrough. Three years later, our hard work finally paid off. We even s

"Christine and I are innocent!" Vincent exclaimed. "Stop being so petty!"I burst into laughter. Without a word, I turned and walked back into the house, returning moments later with the divorce papers. I signed them right in front of him."It doesn't matter anymore," I said coldly. "Once we're divorced, we'll be strangers again."Lorelei stays with me. I don't care about anything else. I just want you out of my life. If you don't leave quietly, I wouldn't mind letting the Camdonia media know just how close you are to your childhood sweetheart."I had plenty of evidence of their affair saved on my phone. I never needed an investigator to dig up the information for me. Christine had never been shy about sharing their intimate moments with others. A simple search would uncover more than enough proof. Vincent snatched the divorce papers from my hand and tore them to shreds."Keep dreaming!" he snapped."Fine," I said calmly. "If you won't sign, let's make a bet. Stay by my side fo

I bought the plane tickets a long time ago. With Lorelei cradled in one arm, I carried what little luggage I owned in the other and boarded the plane that would fly us out of the country.I had majored in AI technology at university, and now I was flying abroad to join my senior, Joshua Fretnik, and his team to start a new life. Before I left the country, I sent Vincent the divorce papers before blocking him on all platforms. I left the divorce proceedings in my lawyer's hands, telling her not to contact me unless my signature or presence was required. When I landed in Aberia, Joshua was there to welcome me."Why do you look so haggard?" he asked. "And is this your daughter?"Lorelei nodded before greeting him sweetly, "Nice to meet you, Mr. Fretnik!"A smile lit Joshua's face as he scooped her into his arms. "I've been begging my wife to give me a daughter for years. My son is too naughty and noisy. But your little girl is so sweet, I feel like I'm melting on the spot!"But t
