My legs gave out. I sank onto the edge of the bed.
“Are you serious?”
“Dead serious. And get this…he’s exactly what you’ve been dreaming about. You want to be a sports photographer, right? Work in PR for a major team? This man is literally at the top of the industry you’re trying to break into.”
The room tilted sideways.
“Aria.” My voice sounded strangled. “You won’t believe what just happened.”
“What? Did you see him again?”
“Worse.” I could barely form the words. “So much worse.”
“What could be worse than kissing a hockey mogul and going viral?”
“Gavin is my mom’s fiancé.”
Silence. Complete, suffocating silence.
“The man I kissed…” My voice broke. “He’s going to be my stepfather.”
“No. No, no, no. Melissa, are you serious right now?”
“I wish I wasn’t.” Nausea rolled through me. “He’s engaged to my mother. They’re getting married in ten months. And I kissed him. I can still feel his hands on my waist, Aria. I can still…”
“Melissa, breathe. You didn’t know.”
“How am I supposed to live here? Under the same roof? Pretending like nothing happened?”
“You have to stay away from him,” Aria said firmly. “You avoid him. It won’t be easy, but for your mom’s sake, you have to pretend it never happened.”
For your mom’s sake. For some reason those words made me angry.
“I’m sorry I have to go.”
“Mel, wait…”
I ended the call before she could say any other thing.
I was angry, I was upset and worst of all I didn't know why I felt like this .
I couldn’t sit still.
I opened the door cautiously. The hallway was empty and silent.
I crept forward, my heart pounding with every step.
Where is he?
I needed to talk to him. He can’t tell my mom what happened, it will crush her.
Then I heard someone talking . I followed the sound to a partially open door…his office, maybe.
I shouldn’t eavesdrop. I knew I shouldn’t
But my feet stopped moving.
“…so grateful, Gavin.” My mother’s voice was warm, almost tender. “You have no idea what this means to us. To me.”
I turned and walked away before I could hear his response.
But then I saw a photograph on the hallway wall. I’d walked past it without noticing before, but now it stopped me cold in my tracks.
Gavin stood beside a younger man …maybe in his mid-twenties. The resemblance was striking. Same strong jaw. Same intense eyes, though the younger man’s were green instead of ice-blue. Same athletic build.
They stood in front of a race car, both wearing racing suits. The younger man had his arm slung around Gavin’s shoulders, grinning widely. But Gavin’s expression was plain.
My stomach dropped.
A son. He has a son.
The realization hit me like cold water. Of course he did. A man his age, this successful, this established…why wouldn’t he have children?
Which meant I didn’t just have a stepfather. I also had a stepbrother.
The thought made my skin crawl.
……
Hours passed. Mom left to pick up more of our things from storage. She asked if I wanted to come.
I told her I was tired, and had a headache.
I was in the kitchen pouring myself a glass of water when I felt his presence behind me.
I spun too fast, nearly dropping the glass. Wetting my hands a bit.
He stood there in his white dress shirt…sleeves rolled to his elbows now…and black slacks. His ice-blue eyes locked onto mine.
“I…” My voice came out high and strangled. “I didn’t see you there.”
Heat flooded my face. My cheeks were burning…probably red as a tomato. I could feel the flush spreading down my neck.
“I’m sorry. I was just…” I set the glass down with trembling hands, nearly knocking it over. “ I didn’t mean to… I”
He said nothing. Just watched me with those unreadable eyes.
My fingers twisted together, knuckles white. “Last night. I didn’t know who you were.” The words tumbled out in a rush. “I swear I didn’t know . If I had known you were my mother’s fiancé, I never would have… ”
My voice cracked.
“Please don’t tell my mom.” The whisper came out broken, and desperate. “Please. She can’t know. It was a mistake. A stupid, horrible mistake ”
A tear slid down my cheek before I could stop it.
I wiped it away with the back of my hand, but another followed.
“I didn’t mean to…” My breath hitched.
He moved.
Each step made my heart pound harder until he stood right in front of me.
I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move.
His hand lifted slowly .
I flinched.
But he only tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers barely grazing my skin.
His eyes searched my face…lingering on my tear-stained cheeks, my trembling lips, the pulse hammering in my throat.
“A mistake,” he said quietly.
“Yes.”
He looked at me for a short while before a faint scoff broke the silence.
“You really don’t think before you act, do you?”
My head snapped up. “Excuse me?”
Anger flooded through me, fast and hot. “That’s not fair.”
His jaw flexed. “Life isn’t.”
My cheeks flushed pink, and my hands trembled at my sides.
“You don’t even know me.”
“Don’t need to.”
I stared at him, furious … more at myself than him. “Go to hell.”
“Already there,” he said quietly, turning away.
He left before I could think of a reply.

Melissa’s POVI’d been having the most fun today, but something was off with Gavin.I didn’t know what exactly…he’d been attentive, sweet even, taking me everywhere I wanted to go. But there was something in his eyes. A heaviness. A shadow that hadn’t been there this morning. Or maybe it had always been there, and I was just now seeing it clearly.“Where else do you want to go?” he asked as we drove through the city, the sun was starting to dip below the skyline.I smiled at him. “I think we can call it a day today. I’m excited about the tournament coming up soon and I have some work to take care of.”“I’m sad about it,” Gavin said, his voice dropping to a much more sad and quiet tone.I turned to look at him fully. “Why?”“After the tournament, it’s around the same time you’ll be done with your internship, right?”“Yes,” I said slowly, not understanding where this was going.“And then you’ll graduate. And move on to whatever comes next.”“But we’re in the same house, aren’t we?” I fr
Gavin’s POVThe drive to the airport was quiet. Diana sat in the passenger seat, with her hands folded in her lap, staring out the window. I kept my eyes on the road, one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the gear shift.Traffic was light this early in the morning. The city was just beginning to wake up…streetlights still glowing against the pale dawn sky, a few early commuters on the sidewalks.I pulled up to the departures terminal and put the car in park. The two guards I’d assigned were already waiting, they stood at a respectable distance.I got out and took her suitcase from the trunk. When I turned, Diana was standing beside the car, with her coat wrapped tight around her, that bright smile firmly in place.“Thank you for driving me,” she said.I set the suitcase down beside her. “Be safe. Please. And if you need anything…anything at all…you can call me.”“I will.” Her smile softened. “I promise.”She leaned in to kiss me.I turned my face away. Her lips caught my cheek i
Aria’s POVThe door closed behind Melissa and Gavin, leaving the apartment in sudden quiet.I stood there for a moment, my arms still warm from where Melissa had hugged me, my eyes still wet from crying.“He loves her,” I said softly to the empty space where they’d been standing.“Yes.”I turned to find Kane watching me from his position by the window. His expression was unreadable as always, but something in his eyes was softer now.“Gavin didn’t know how to love,” Kane continued, his voice quiet. “I’m happy he’s freeing himself from all the walls he built.”He paused, his gaze distant.“Although she’s now his greatest weakness.”The words hung heavy in the air. Kane’s lips curved into something that might have been a smile, but it looked sad. Like he understood the weight of what loving someone truly meant in their world. A world I don’t think I’ll ever really understand. I wiped away one last tear and turned to face him fully.“Are you really planning to keep me here?” I asked. He
Melissa’s POVIn the hallway, I finally let out the breath I’d been holding. My chest felt tight. I remember what Jason told me, but he kind of made it seem like Gavin was heartless, but I choose to trust Gavin.“She’ll be fine.”“Will she?” I asked quietly.“Yes.” His thumb brushed across my knuckles. “Kane is… difficult. But he’s good at what he does. And what he does is protect people.”“He barely knows her.”“Sometimes that doesn’t matter.” His blue eyes met mine. “Sometimes you just know.”I thought about the party where we’d first met. The kiss that had started everything. The way my entire world had tilted the moment our eyes met.“Yeah,” I whispered. “Sometimes you just know.”He pulled me closer, pressing a kiss to my forehead. “Trust me, Piccola. She’s safer with Kane.”I wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him.“Give me a second,” I said, pulling away gently. His eyebrow raised. “Melissa…”“Just one second. Please, my love.”He studied my face for a moment, then nodde
Melissa’s POVWe all settled into the living room…Gavin and me on one couch, Aria curled up on the other, Kane standing by the window like a sentinel. The tension in the room was thick as fuck “Someone needs to start explaining,” I said again, looking between all of them. “Right now.”Kane turned from the window, his expression unreadable. “I’ve been following you around because of your safety.”I blinked. “My safety?”“Yes.”“Why would I need…” I stopped, looking at Gavin. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed on some point across the room. “Gavin?”He took a breath, then finally looked at me.“There are five families,” he said quietly. “A group made from the richest, most powerful families in the world. They control governments. Industries, Let's just say they are real world powers. They operate in shadows, but their influence touches every corner of global power.”I uncrossed my legs, then crossed them again, settling in properly. This was going to be complicated.“Okay,” I said slowly
Diana’s POVI woke to an empty room. The sheets beside me were cool to the touch. Gavin was gone, I don’t think he returned to bed at all last night.I sat up slowly and reached for my robe draped across the chair. The silk slid over my skin as I tied it at my waist, the fabric made soft rustling sounds in the quiet room. The penthouse was silent.I walked out of the bedroom, my bare feet soundless on the plush carpet. The hallway stretched before me, dim in the early morning light. Christmas lights still twinkled on the tree in the living room, casting everything in soft gold.“Gavin?” I called softly.Nothing.I moved through the house quietly. His office door was closed, but when I pushed it open, the room was dark and still. No one was around. I walked to the kitchen counter and stood there, my hands resting on the cool marble.“He’s gone to get ice cream,” I said to the empty room.A smile curved my lips. Then I started laughing. It was soft at first, then it got louder. The soun
