My legs gave out. I sank onto the edge of the bed.
“Are you serious?”
“Dead serious. And get this…he’s exactly what you’ve been dreaming about. You want to be a sports photographer, right? Work in PR for a major team? This man is literally at the top of the industry you’re trying to break into.”
The room tilted sideways.
“Aria.” My voice sounded strangled. “You won’t believe what just happened.”
“What? Did you see him again?”
“Worse.” I could barely form the words. “So much worse.”
“What could be worse than kissing a hockey mogul and going viral?”
“Gavin is my mom’s fiancé.”
Silence. Complete, suffocating silence.
“The man I kissed…” My voice broke. “He’s going to be my stepfather.”
“No. No, no, no. Melissa, are you serious right now?”
“I wish I wasn’t.” Nausea rolled through me. “He’s engaged to my mother. They’re getting married in ten months. And I kissed him. I can still feel his hands on my waist, Aria. I can still…”
“Melissa, breathe. You didn’t know.”
“How am I supposed to live here? Under the same roof? Pretending like nothing happened?”
“You have to stay away from him,” Aria said firmly. “You avoid him. It won’t be easy, but for your mom’s sake, you have to pretend it never happened.”
For your mom’s sake. For some reason those words made me angry.
“I’m sorry I have to go.”
“Mel, wait…”
I ended the call before she could say any other thing.
I was angry, I was upset and worst of all I didn't know why I felt like this .
I couldn’t sit still.
I opened the door cautiously. The hallway was empty and silent.
I crept forward, my heart pounding with every step.
Where is he?
I needed to talk to him. He can’t tell my mom what happened, it will crush her.
Then I heard someone talking . I followed the sound to a partially open door…his office, maybe.
I shouldn’t eavesdrop. I knew I shouldn’t
But my feet stopped moving.
“…so grateful, Gavin.” My mother’s voice was warm, almost tender. “You have no idea what this means to us. To me.”
I turned and walked away before I could hear his response.
But then I saw a photograph on the hallway wall. I’d walked past it without noticing before, but now it stopped me cold in my tracks.
Gavin stood beside a younger man …maybe in his mid-twenties. The resemblance was striking. Same strong jaw. Same intense eyes, though the younger man’s were green instead of ice-blue. Same athletic build.
They stood in front of a race car, both wearing racing suits. The younger man had his arm slung around Gavin’s shoulders, grinning widely. But Gavin’s expression was plain.
My stomach dropped.
A son. He has a son.
The realization hit me like cold water. Of course he did. A man his age, this successful, this established…why wouldn’t he have children?
Which meant I didn’t just have a stepfather. I also had a stepbrother.
The thought made my skin crawl.
……
Hours passed. Mom left to pick up more of our things from storage. She asked if I wanted to come.
I told her I was tired, and had a headache.
I was in the kitchen pouring myself a glass of water when I felt his presence behind me.
I spun too fast, nearly dropping the glass. Wetting my hands a bit.
He stood there in his white dress shirt…sleeves rolled to his elbows now…and black slacks. His ice-blue eyes locked onto mine.
“I…” My voice came out high and strangled. “I didn’t see you there.”
Heat flooded my face. My cheeks were burning…probably red as a tomato. I could feel the flush spreading down my neck.
“I’m sorry. I was just…” I set the glass down with trembling hands, nearly knocking it over. “ I didn’t mean to… I”
He said nothing. Just watched me with those unreadable eyes.
My fingers twisted together, knuckles white. “Last night. I didn’t know who you were.” The words tumbled out in a rush. “I swear I didn’t know . If I had known you were my mother’s fiancé, I never would have… ”
My voice cracked.
“Please don’t tell my mom.” The whisper came out broken, and desperate. “Please. She can’t know. It was a mistake. A stupid, horrible mistake ”
A tear slid down my cheek before I could stop it.
I wiped it away with the back of my hand, but another followed.
“I didn’t mean to…” My breath hitched.
He moved.
Each step made my heart pound harder until he stood right in front of me.
I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t move.
His hand lifted slowly .
I flinched.
But he only tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers barely grazing my skin.
His eyes searched my face…lingering on my tear-stained cheeks, my trembling lips, the pulse hammering in my throat.
“A mistake,” he said quietly.
“Yes.”
He looked at me for a short while before a faint scoff broke the silence.
“You really don’t think before you act, do you?”
My head snapped up. “Excuse me?”
Anger flooded through me, fast and hot. “That’s not fair.”
His jaw flexed. “Life isn’t.”
My cheeks flushed pink, and my hands trembled at my sides.
“You don’t even know me.”
“Don’t need to.”
I stared at him, furious … more at myself than him. “Go to hell.”
“Already there,” he said quietly, turning away.
He left before I could think of a reply.

Melissa’s POVI woke to sunlight streaming through my curtains and Aria’s soft breathing beside me.For a moment, I just lay there, watching her sleep. Her purple hair was a mess. Her makeup was smudged. But she looked peaceful for the first time in hours.Carefully, I slipped out of bed without waking her. My body ached everywhere. My neck. My hip and the worst of all my lips.I stretched slowly, wincing at the soreness, then padded to the bathroom. The mirror showed exactly what I expected…and worse. My lip was swollen, the split visible and angry. But it was my neck that made me freeze.Dark purple bruises. Fingerprints. They were clear and unmistakable where he’d gripped my throat.I touched them gently, and pain flared.Hmmm, I signed before I grabbed my toothbrush and brushed my teeth like a robot, still staring at the bruises in the mirror.Who had that been last night? It looked like Gavin. Sounded like Gavin. But something had been off. Or is that who he just is?I rinsed my
Melissa’s POVI made my way back to the gala on shaking legs. The corridor felt longer than before. Each step was an effort. My lip throbbed. My neck ached. Everything hurt and I wanted nothing more than to go home. When I pushed through the doors, the party was still in full swing. Music played. People laughed and danced like nothing had happened. Like the world hadn’t just tilted sideways.I scanned the crowd, searching for Aria.I found her near the bar with Kane, her burgundy dress was like a beacon. She was pale, her arms wrapped around herself, looking small and lost.I pushed through the crowd toward her.“Melissa!” She turned when she saw me, relief flooding her face. Then her expression changed. “Oh my God, what happened to your face?”Her hands came up to cup my cheeks, her eyes scanning the split in my lip, the smudged makeup, the marks I knew were forming on my neck.“I’m okay,” I said, trying to force a smile.“You’re not okay.” Her voice was firm. “Who did this? Was it…”
Melissa’s POV“Gavin?” I whispered again, my thumb brushing across his cheekbone. He was quiet. Too quiet. Just staring at me with those dark eyes that seemed different somehow. Less guarded. “Are you okay?” I asked softly. My hand was still on his face, feeling the tension in his jaw. “Gavin, what’s going on? What’s with all those symbols? And who is Lord Zeus?”He didn’t answer. Just kept looking at me like I was something he was trying to memorize. Then, in a voice rougher than I’d ever heard from him: “Do you love me?”I blinked. “What?”“Do you love me?” He repeated, his hand coming up to cover mine against his cheek. His touch was different. Warmer, maybe. Or was I imagining it?“Are you okay? What’s wrong with…”“Do you love me, Melissa?” His voice cracked slightly on my name, and something in his eyes looked almost… desperate.I looked around the empty corridor. This was so sudden. So unlike him. Gavin didn’t ask questions like this. He didn’t ask.But those eyes… they were
Melissa’s POVKane stood immediately, his movements fluid and controlled. He looked down at us. His eyes swept the empty hallway, lingering on the shadows like he could see something we couldn’t.“We should go inside,” he said quietly. “Before anyone sees you like this and starts asking questions.”He was right. Aria’s cheek was already showing the red mark from Christian’s slap. My dress was wrinkled from tackling him. We looked like exactly what we were…two girls who’d just been in a fight.Kane extended his hand to me first. I took it, letting him pull me to my feet. Then together, we helped Aria up.She was trembling. I kept my arm around her waist, holding her steady.“Can you walk?” I asked softly, reaching out to arrange her hair. She nodded, but I didn’t believe her. Still, we didn’t have much choice. She leaned heavily against me as we walked. Kane followed close behind, his presence somehow both comforting and unsettling. When we pushed through the doors back into the main h
Aria’s POVI stood against the wall like a decoration.A pretty, expensive decoration in a burgundy dress . I watched couples swirl across the dance floor. Watched waiters glide past with champagne. Christian was everywhere. Every time I turned around, he was there. His hand on my elbow. His breath on my neck. His voice in my ear, reminding me to smile, to stand up straight, to stop looking so miserable.“You’re representing both our families tonight,” he’d whispered earlier. “Try to look like you’re not attending a funeral.”But that’s exactly what this felt like. My funeral. The death of any future I’d ever wanted for myself.I caught Melissa’s eye across the room. She was dancing with Jason, Gavin’s son, and even from this distance I could see the tension in her shoulders. We were both trapped in our own particular hells tonight. At least she had someone who looked at her like Gavin looked at her…like she was the only person in the room, like she was worth burning the world down f
Melissa’s POVI couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.Mom had disappeared into the crowd, leaving me standing there with a champagne flute I didn’t remember picking up. The crystal felt cold against my palm.Aria was across the room, trapped in conversation with an older couple who kept touching her arm possessively. Her smile was weird. Her eyes screamed for help. And Gavin…Gavin was making his way toward me through the crowd.People stopped him every few steps. A handshake here. A brief word there. But his eyes never left mine. They were dark, intense burning with something I couldn’t quite name. When he finally reached me, he didn’t touch me. He didn’t even stand too close. But the air between us felt charged.“Melissa.” His voice was low. “You came.”“Aria needed me.” I took a sip of champagne, needing something to do with my hands. “What happened with my mom?”His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. “Not here.”“Gavin…”“Not. Here.” His eyes flicked aroun
