Mark had call Jane to come see Karen

Jane sat beside her on the edge of the bed, the mattress dipping under her weight. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Karen’s breath trembled; Jane’s fingers tapped nervously against her thigh. The silence felt too loud, too sharp, like it carried the echoes of everything Karen had just destroyed.

“You need to get dressed,” Jane murmured eventually. “Peter, he might still be around.”

Karen flinched, feeling the words like a blade sliding between her ribs. “I can’t face him,” she whispered.

“You don’t have a choice.”

Karen moved slowly, as if gravity pressed harder on her than on everyone else. She slipped out of the sheets, pulling on her dress with hands that wouldn’t stop shaking. She felt exposed even after covering herself like shame had settled on her skin.

Jane watched her quietly, eyes softening just slightly. “Look I shouldn’t have snapped at you,” she said. “I was angry. But I’m still here. I’m not leaving you alone in this.”

Immediately Mark left, Peter was so sure he would not let Karen stay at home because mark could plot another one of his mischievous evil on Karen. He didn’t dare. Not after seeing Mark wandering the estate like a wolf searching for blood. Not after hearing his voice dripping with hatred for the child Karen carried. As he carried her through the dimly lit back pathway, Karen clung to him, her arms around his neck, her face buried in the warm space between his shoulder and jaw.He could feel her trembling. Not from cold. From fear. From exhaustion. From everything she’d endured in the last hours.“Peter,” she whispered weakly, “where where are you taking me?”“Somewhere safe,” he murmured, brushing a kiss against her forehead. “Somewhere Mark doesn’t know exists. Somewhere not even Jane can find you.”Her fingers tightened in his shirt.“Why do you sound like you’re saying goodbye?”He didn’t answer. Not yet.He carried her to his car behind the maintenance building his backup vehicle,

The street of New York was silent, too silent. The kind of silence that made Peter’s skin crawl as he stepped out of his house and scanned the dimly lit the streets. The streetlights flickered, stretching long shadows across the pavement. His heart pounded with a deep, primal fear he couldn’t swallow. Karen was gone. Not with her phone. Not with her bag. Not with anything that could protect her much less protect the tiny, innocent life growing inside her. Peter ran a hand over his face, breath shaking. His anger getting through him again. She was pregnant. His child. His entire future tied into one fragile heartbeat. And Mark Mark had made it clear he didn’t want that baby born. Peter could still hear the venom in his brother’s voice that night: “The moment she gives him a child, he wins. T

The lights were still glowing through the curtains. She stepped closer, her bare feet slapping softly against the balcony. She didn’t even feel anything. All she felt was the panic clawing at her chest, the guilt tearing through her ribs as if trying to break free. She pressed her palm to the bedroom bed trying to catch her breath. And then she froze. There, on the stairs stood Jane. Her friend. Her closest confidant. The girl she’d cried to. The girl she’d trusted. Jane’s Jane Jane Karen’s heart dropped so sharply she felt physically dizzy. Jane leaned closer, her hair falling over her shoulder, her voice soft, almost coaxing. Karen couldn’t hear the words, but she didn’t need to. The way Jane looked at him, the way her hand trailed up his arm it was enough. Her stomach twisted painfully. “No,” she whispered, her voice cracking into the night

Peter didn’t leave the house immediately. He sat in the dim hallway, elbows on his knees, head bowed. His breaths were shallow, uneven not because of anger anymore, but because heartbreak always stole air first. Upstairs, Karen’s sobs had quieted into muffled hiccups. Jane whispered to her softly, wrapping her arms tight around her. But even as Jane rocked her gently, there was a flicker behind her eyes something troubled, something unspoken. Hours slipped by. Karen eventually fell asleep on the bed from exhaustion, her tear stained face pressed into the pillow. Jane pulled a blanket over her slowly, brushing hair from her forehead. Then she paused. Watched her. A strange mix of pity and resentment flickered inside Jane. “You ruin everything and still get loved this much,” she whispered under her breath. She stood and
