Melissa's POV

At first, there was nothing but a seamless, suffocating dark that pressed in on me, thick and total and i couldn't feel my body, couldn't feel whether i was breathing and terror pushed against the edge of my mind.

Then, incrementally, a voice broke in.

"Melissa! Stay with me!"

Jamal.

Not just sound, it was anchor, pulling me back from the edge and i clawed toward it, into the fog, into the weight that was suffocating me and my chest burned, my throat throbbed, but i forced my eyelids to snap open.

Blurred shapes hovered above me. A ceiling shadows and a body hovering close, Jamal eyes was wild and his face twisted in fear. His fingers gripped tightly onto my side, and then it hit me… the warm stickiness wasn't only his grip. It was blood.

My blood.

I tried to speak, but all that came out was a weak wheeze "Don't you dare let me go," Jamal screamed, his voice trembling "You hear me? You promised not to let go and i'm not going to let go either."

God, the pain was burning

Jamal’s POVThe door cracked wider, the wood groaning like it hadn’t been touched in years. My gun was already drawn, steady in my grip, though my pulse thundered hard enough to rattle my ribs. Melissa clung to my arm, her breath shallow, quick, trembling. The figure stood in the doorway, framed by that narrow beam of light. Cloaked, hood shadowing her face, hands hidden inside the folds of fabric. Not moving. Not speaking. Just… watching.“Who are you?” I demanded, voice cutting through the silence like steel. No answer.“Step inside. Slowly. Hands where I can see them.”The figure obeyed, but in a way that made the hair at the back of my neck rise—deliberate, measured, as though she wanted me to see how unbothered she was. Her movements whispered with silk against wood as she crossed the threshold.Melissa’s nails dug into my arm, her voice barely audible. “Jamal… is it her?”I didn’t answer. Not yet. I couldn’t afford to—not until I knew. The hood tilted, a faint smile visible bene

Melissa's POVDarkness engulfed the library and the last flicker of light had died with the lamp, leaving us to nothing but the heavy silence of the estate and the voice. That voice."Did you really think you could keep her from me, Jamal?" I askedThe voice glided through the room like smoke, feminine, calm but oozing menace and my chest tightened, breath lodging against my ribs and i couldn't see her in the dark but she was there and was real.My heart was pounding in my ears and Jamal's arms around my waist clenched tighter, hard, unyielding. He pulled me into him, shielding me with his body and his voice was low, controlled but i could feel the fires raging beneath "Eleanor" he snarled, her name a curse. My gut clenched Eleanor. The name was the one I'd spoken. The one that was linked to my mother's fear, to the letter she'd left and now, she was in this house.I caught Jamal's arm "She's here" I whispered."Yes." His chin brushed against my temple when he leaned in close "But she

Jamal's POVMelissa's lips trembled as she said that name, so gentle it was almost overwhelmed by the fire raging in the library hearth but i heard it and it was like a hand had reached into my chest and encircled their fist around my heart. The name did not fit in this house. Not on her lips and not on Annabelle, Michael or the ghosts of Whitmoore Estate and yet it sat here.I froze, my muscles braced, my head whirling between horror and shock and my voice was sharper than i intended "Say it again." i demandedMelissa's eyes widened with a mix of shame and terror present within them "I no Jamal, you don't know." i said"Mellissa" I leaned in with my voice dropping into that dark tone that always seemed to send her fleeing from me or tumbling into me "I want you to say it again without hiding anything and don't hide anyone. Say it again" i demandedHer fists were clenched at the bottom of her dress, her knuckles as white as stone "It was Eleanor," she whispered finally, the syllables

Jamal's POVSleep had been a stranger to me as i awoke during the night, eyeing the ceiling as Melissa's breathing shifted beside me, light and irregular and disturbed and i wanted to draw her into my body, extract the truth she'd been hiding and promise that I'd reduce to ashes whatever fear plagued her but I'd learned in the recent past that urging her to the edge urged her further away and the prospect of driving her to silence frightened me more than any enemy I'd faced in business or combat.I lay there, listening, cataloging every rough breath, every shudder in her chest to memory as it was to be standing over a drowning loved one and refusing to throw out the hand that i continued to extend.By morning, i could not stand it any longer.I carefully got up from bed so as not to disturb her and went softly down to my study as the villa was quiet apart from the distant hum of the sea outside but my head was in a whirl.I poured myself a drink, though much too soon, and leaned again

Melissa's POVMorning came too early as the Mediterranean sun poured over the villa, golden light spilling through the curtains like heaven-spilled heat and Birds trilled from the lemon trees outside the window, their song cutting through the soft hush of waves below and the entire day cried out beauty, safety, new beginnings and my body was weighed down, lashed by shadows that sunlight could not scorch even though Jamal had already risen from bed before me, his steps quiet and deliberate but i pretended to be asleep when he kissed my temple, the roughness of his stubble scratching against my skin "Rest," he whispered softly, his voice softer than anyone else ever got to know, then he slipped out of the room silently, leaving behind his cologne and the fading echo of his heat.I simply stayed there for a bit, eyes closed, heart racing as last night replayed itself in my head. That glance and that whisper.Rapidly, Melissa. Rapidly you'll understand why you were never his. You've alway

Melissa's POVThis villa was supposed to be a sanctuary.Sunlight poured through the huge windows, spilling across white walls and shining stone floors and the ocean lay below, its enormous blue line promising peace i couldn't access and the lemon trees creaked in the breeze, their acrid scent punching through the sea air as it was beautiful, almost brutally so, like paradise had been jammed into every corner. But peace of mind doesn't materialize because you relocate. You take your ghosts with you.And mine had accompanied me here.I tried to pretend otherwise. That morning, Jamal had led me into the nearest town and for a while i let him divert me by moving through cobblestone streets in front of shops painted pastel colors as he spent money on me, buying silk scarves at a store where the owner coddled me and scented pastries sprinkled with sugar at a small café off the harbor and kept his hand around mine the entire time, running his thumb across my palm as if trying to remind me a
