AUTHOR'S POV
Katerina’s breath caught in her throat when she heard Luca's words. To be honest, she wasn't expecting him to trust her that easily, not even in her wildest dream. Why the change of heart? Why did he believe her without asking questions like he always did? Katerina couldn't help it but wonder, many questions buzzing in her mind.“You…believe me?” She asked hesitantly, not sure if she had heard it right or if her ear was playing a damn game on her.You can't blame Katerina for acting that way because…it was hard for Lucas to believe her in the past, since Monalisa walked in her once peaceful life where they were no doubts. Kate wasn't expecting the conversation to be this smooth either. She was prepared to face the difficulty that was ahead of her. She was ready to accept the fact that Lucas wouldn't believe…The smile on Luca's face broadened when he saw her reaction. He knew damn well that she would act that way when he heard his words.“Yes IAUTHOR'S POVThe doctor walked to the table, placing the items that he had brought with him carefully on it. There was something about his walking style that made it hard for Katerina to look away. Katerina’s eyes followed the doctor's every single action, the way he walked, moved a finger and…everything. There was something about him that she couldn't decipher. Despite the disinfectant and the smell of medicine that hung heavily in the air, his strong cologne hit her nostrils. That smell of cologne…Katerina felt something weird. As though she had seen him somewhere that she couldn't remember. Her eyes shifted to the name tag on the doctor's coat.“Darius.” The name tag reads the words written in bold. She wrecked her mind, trying to remember if she has ever heard the name but…it didn't ring a bell in her head. He’s a doctor and she's in the fashion industry. It's unlikely that they have crossed paths.“Perhaps I’m just being paranoid.”She heaved a slow deep breath, trying her best t
KATERINA I was back in my room after spending a couple of minutes with the nanny. I wanted to stay for a little bit longer to watch over her but David was so strict, following the doctor's instructions that said I should have enough bed rest. When it comes to health matters, David is usually so concerned and I hated it.I tried to protest and give all kinds of reasons but…he didn't agree to any of it.The head of the bodyguards was inside my room, his head bowed from guilt.“Where were you during the fire incident?” David asked, his voice a little bit harsh because he thinks the bodyguards didn't do their work well enough. If they were guarded the whole time. This wouldn't have happened in the first place. We wouldn't be here and nanny would be in good health.“First of all, I apologise for what happened, ma’am. It's my responsibility to make sure that your safety comes first before everything. I’m ready to face the consequences of what happened yesterday. If you feel that you're not
KATERINA Darkness, heavy and thick surrounded me. I flickered my long eyelashes a few times, trying to escape the darkness that was haunting . My throat felt sore, as if I hadn't drunk water for days or perhaps weeks. Some parts of my body ached, especially my left arm. What's happening? Why am I feeling this way? I couldn't help but question myself, desperately fighting the darkness that was crawling to me. It felt as though I had been run over by a train, or something heavier. Slowly, I opened my eyes, a pungent smell of disinfectants and medicines hitting my nostrils that made me crinkle my nose. I couldn't help but crease my eyebrows in confusion, trying to make sense of where I was and what was happening. Even though my memory was a little bit hazy, I could tell that something was seriously wrong. I was laying on the bed, definitely not the bed that I fell asleep on at nanny's place. Pain shot through my arm but I ignored it, trying to remember how I ended up here, at t
LUCAS “How did you find out about it?” He asked, a deep frown taking over his features and I could feel the concern in his voice. I chuckled, “Well, the truth would never hide forever.”I shrugged nonchalantly because it was pretty obvious. He was quiet when he heard my words, as though searching for the right words to say. “Why didn't you tell me about it? We have shared so many secrets, laughed and ate together. There were so many opportunities for you to tell me but you chose to remain silent. Why?” I couldn't help it but in desperation. I wanted to understand why the people close to me would hide such important information from me. Perhaps if I had known the truth from the very start, the damage wouldn't be this big. I’m not close to being a saint because I have done some things which are not pleasant. I have lied. I have made bad decisions in life and so many things that I couldn't mention. However, I deserved to know the truth. “It wasn't in my position to tell you about y
LUCASIt was silent inside the office that I could hear my uneven breath. I stared at the blinking cursor on the screen, many thoughts going through my mind. It's already in the middle of the night but here I was, still in my office with no desire to go home.I have been re-playing the same video over and over again but…it didn't make any change. There was a time glitch during the second night at the laboratory where I presented the sample for paternity DNA test. I think…that was the night that the results were swapped.I asked the laboratory manager to give me the CCTV footage from four years ago because I wanted to check it for myself to make sure that it was true. My jaw twitched and my grip on the mouse tightened until I heard a cracking sound.“Take good care of our son. When we're done with our mission, we’ll go somewhere far away.” The words re-played in my mind over and over again.I shut down the computer, tossing the mouse away and ran my fingers through my already messy hai
KATERINA “I…I don't know what happened to your dad, Katerina. I already told you everything that I know.” She said, avoiding looking me in the eyes because she knew damn well that I could see through them and realise that she was lying on my face.“I don't know what really happened. I was in the kitchen preparing lunch when I heard someone shouting from the living room and when I rushed there, I saw your dad laying on the floor.” She explained, struggling to get the words out of her mouth. The corner of my lips curved into a smile. I could tell that she was lying to me, again. I held her hand on the table.“I can see it through your eyes, nanny. I know you can feel it yourself that you're not telling the truth. This is what you told me four years ago. Back then, I could tell that you weren't telling the truth either.” She swallowed sharply when she heard my words, slowly pulling her hand from my hold and looked away.“I remember you telling me that…we should always say the truth beca
KATERINA Nanny welcomed me so warmly and now I was sitting on one of the couches. I looked around the house, my lips curving into a smile. The house looked beautiful from the inside and everything was arranged in order. It had the warmth that the house should have. I couldn't explain why but I felt so comfortable to be in nanny's house. I relaxed on the couch, allowing myself to feel like I was at home. I didn't have any idea what was cooking but…whatever it was, it smelled delicious. Nanny always cooked delicious food. She's the one who taught me how to cook and I’ll forever be grateful to her. I used to spend most of the time with her in the kitchen, watching as she cooked… I wiped tears from my eyes using the back of my hand, the smile on my lips broadening. I still couldn't believe that I had found my nanny, safe and sound. It felt surreal. If it was a dream, I didn't want to wake up from it. “Here is the herbal tea for you.” She materialised from where she had disappeared t
KATERINA It felt as though time was moving in slow motion. Raising my head, I stared at the ticking digital wall clock, the knot at the tip of my stomach tightening. It seemed as though a century had passed by even though it had been about two hours since My lawyer left the office. Each passing microsecond meant that Nanny’s life was in danger.I have tried to get lost in work but I just couldn't concentrate no matter how much I tried. A frustrated sigh escaped my lips when I gave it a thought, running my fingers through my already messy hair.I stared at the cold food at the table. I wasn't able to eat more than two spoons. I mean, how was I supposed to eat peacefully knowing too well that the life of someone that I care so much about is in danger? How do I bring myself to enjoy the food? To pretend as though nothing was okay? The food tasted blunt even though it was one of my favourites.Perhaps it is all my fa
LUCASA FEW MINUTES LATERMy car pulled up under the basement of a skyline building that was made of glasses about five minutes ago. However, I remained seated in the car, contemplating whether I was ready to confront what Ryan had for me in store or not. What if my doubts are proven right? I couldn't help but give it a thought. To be honest, I felt a little bit nervous. Heaving a deep sigh, I alighted the car and headed straight to the tall building. I have to admit that the building looked magnificent. I remember how Ryan started his journey to building a tech company in a small office downtown a couple of years ago. My lips curved into a smile when I gave it a thought. As a friend, I’m so happy for him because I have watched him grow…I went through a digital security check before they allowed me to enter the building. The security check was a little bit slow but I tried my best to be patient. I didn't expect
